2012 Draft Discussion

Billy has kicked 2 NAB cup goals,it could be as much as 5 years before he might become a consistent goal contributor.I'd say Tippett is very much on our radar.

Averages 2 goals a game in his last 2 games.:D

If we get KT,what are we going to do with Billy? Can't structure with 2 dominant forward/rucks with Luey in the team. Not to mention JB. Way too good for NEAFL, & won't develop as well ion that envioronment.

Longer looks like the next Brad Ottens to me - a player that will win you grand finals, so the sooner we develop him the better. Is already more than competitive & has surpassed Lisle & co as a forward.

Waste of a top 10 draft pick if we chase Tippett, IMO.

While I don't want Quigley thinking I see Tippett as a messiah, I do see Tippett as more than your standard ruck/forward.

He's more of a forward who can ruck rather than a ruckman that gets sent forward to provide a marking target.

Drew Petrie style. He doesn't have to play in the ruck just because he can.

I will be interested to see how Melbourne goes this year with Clark, Martin and Jamar in their best 22.

Ditto Goldstein, McIntosh and Petrie.

I'm with TBD on this one, i don't even think of Tippett as a ruck. There is enough room in a few years for Tippett and Longer as the forwards, with Bergs in the ruck. Nothing wrong with that structure at all. Tippett and Longer would give us excellent contested marking power. Longer still looks like an excellent ruckman as well, so i would still be keen to see him playing some significant time in the ruck. Would be good to take all ruck contests in the forward line as well, let Bergs hang a kick behind the ball. Longers keen eye with his tap work from stopages around goal = quick snaps and easy goals i think.

Might be hard to fit them all in whilst Browny is still here, but this is more post Brown thinking. Also not something i want to think about, but what are the chances of having Tippett, Bergs and Longer all healthy and fit for 22 games a season anyway.

I've said this before but I don't see Tippett, Longer and Leuenberger in the same team. Things change though. I will be interested to see how Melbourne goes this year with Clark, Martin and Jamar in their best 22.

Yeah, it is hard, I can see the "Longburger" working, but throw in Tippett, well, it's hard to come up with a combo, maybe the "Longburgett"?

Could always get Schultz for the Schlongberger.

This thread is as good as anywhere to ask, so is it true we did not trigger our remaining first round pick for use this year? If not (assuming it's supposedly the super draft) why not?

We have activated the final compensation pick (Rischitelli) for this year's draft. Never fear!

The dates for trade week and FA are set up interesting this year. Basically a 3 week period with FA and trading over lapping in the middle of the 3 weeks. Looks like it will give clubs time to suss out FA players and plan trades accordingly. Will be interesting to see if any FA movement affects drafting a month later, with clubs maybe out of reach of a player they want insteading getting someone via FA.

For example, we need a key forward, but if the one we want was going to be gone by our first pick in the draft, you could target an FA, then use the pick on best available in the draft. Not saying we should do this, but just an example on how FA might change the draft. I don't expect lots of movement, but like trade week, I think talls and rucks will be the main focus in FA for clubs.

It is a tad frustrating having two local KPFs (Bourke and Cameron) being talked up as potential top 25 draft prospects this year, with no access to them. This is GC's last year of priority zone access, right?

Yeah. I've said this a few times before but it defies belief that the AFL didn't make this subject to a bidding system like father-son. In some respects, it is a bit fortunate that the recent crop of Qld youngsters hasn't been as strong as it can be. I suspect it is another case of the clubs not looking at the fine print when they signed off on the draft concessions for the expansion clubs.

Or maybe a certain club representative saw it but chose to ignore it.

Quite frustrating, I agree. I love seeing the local kids in Lions colours.

There are a couple of other QLD'ers that could spark some interest this year, but as always, we will have to wait and see how they perform at the U18 Champs. All hope is not lost this year (re QLD boys at the Lions).

The only 'good' news about this is that GC already have some very promising young KPP's, withonly so many spots to go round might set up a poaching raid a couple of years down the track.

I noticed Damien Bourke has been appointed to the Board sub-committee in advisory role on all matters football related. Is this likely to have any effect on whether Jordan stays in Brisbane to pursue his footy career? Or am I just clutching at straws?

I was clutching at the same straws Nick...but by my reckoning (happy to be corrected), to get to the Lions Jordan would need to 'get by' Geelong F/S then Suns zone concession then be taken by the Lions as a standard draft pick (or by trading with the Suns).
