2012 Draft Discussion

Offsider see if you can get some vision of Liam Flaherty. Just quietly I like him a lot and he is one who is every chance to fly under the radar. NSW KPF - Taylor Walker mark II (onfield hopefully not as stupid).

I am not sure if he is quite up to Taylor Walker in terms of talent, if I can recall coming into the 2007 draft Taylor Walker was in the top 20 in terms of talent. I am not sure I would have Flaherty in that same range. But there is definitely something to work with, I saw a little bit of him at the champs, and he did show some good signs, albeit inconsistent signs. Still I think he is probably a rookie option, but I wouldn't mind if the club picked him up.

Also looking at the TAC Cup grand final and finals over all, Macrae and Jaksch have risen in my rankings and Membrey has also climbed a little bit. I must say Jaksch has really come on well over the course of the year and is quite a bit ahead of all the KPF prospects available this year imo.

Interesting TAC Cup Future Stars has us taking Jaksch at 8, and Shaw dropping out of the first round.

1. Lachie Whitfield
2. Jimmy Toumpas
3. Jack Viney (F/S)
4. Brodie Grundy
5. Jonathan O'Rorke
6. Sam Mayes
7. Oliver Wines
8. Kristian Jaksch
9. Lachlan Plowman
10. Joe Daniher (F/S)
11. Tom Lee
12. Jackson Macrae

I was wondering if Flaherty was getting any love on any boards. I guess so.

I've been quietly talking him up on the Fremantle board recently. He is one of the few KPFs I would like in the later rounds (along with White, Close and Porter). There does look to be a lot there to work with.

Speaking of KPFs, if Mason Shaw played in Victoria then I have no doubts TAC Cup Future Stars would be losing their you know what over him. The kid is a big game player, and even though he hasn't looked entirely motivated this season, he has still dominated the competition - including a 5 goal haul in the Grand Final today. He is still the best KPF in the draft in my opinion, always has been.

Anyone think Lee will go that high?

I don't think he will make it to the draft, either GWS will pick him up or trade him as a player previously nominated for the draft. They will probably get a second rounder, or late first imo, maybe something similar to the Collingwood or St Kilda deal from last year.

I am down at the docklands watching the GF's, and the TAC was a pretty high standard game and an absolute nailbitter with a point splitting them.

I was very impressed with Kristian Jaksch and tended to keep an eye on him after the TAC Cup Show on 9 last week has us taking him with pick 8 in their phantom draft, but competes well and looked a very likely key forward who can go back.

Really liked his intercept marking; his field kicking for a big man was a pleasure to watch. There was a bit of play in the last Q where he intercepted a mark and hit a player on the boundary 45-55 metres away on the chest.

No. 15, Huts as a back looked quite assured of himself with decent skill. He is around the 190 mark and already well built, is he expectged to be picked up this year? Tipungwuti was extremely agile and tenacious with his attack on the footy. Lacked the polish to finish off his good work in front of goals but certainly one to watch and already physically developed although quite short. Membrey has the starting of a Beams-esque sleeve tattoo coming along; he got on the end of a few and seems a likely type. Chris25/Offsider, where would you see him fitting in an AFL team (which one)? Billings played quite well, I assume he is eligible next year?

Good point.

How many more of those cards have they got?

10 in total right?
Elliot, Marty Clarke, Boumann, Morris, Milera & Saad = 6

...so 4 left?

Just one I am led to believe, which will probably be Tom Lee as he is quite easily the best mature age player available this year. They also have got Tim Mohr and Adam Kennedy on their list and I think they traded Luke Brown to Adelaide as well.

A 22 YO from North Adelaide - Mitch Clisby looks the goods. Great foot skills, quick and takes the game on from defence. Hitting plenty of targets from the backline and could be a good rookie list prospect.

On those players:

Billings - expected to go next year, likely top 5 prospect at this stage, elite outside prospect imo. Similar to Nick Dal Santo.

Tipungwuti - Looks to be a likely rookie prospect, doubt he will go in the national draft, definitely has some tricks, great speed and agility, defensive game needs a bit more improvement, skills can be hit and miss not much of a worry for mine though. Big issue is his fitness and endurance, seems to have improved from last year, but possible rookie chance. Lots of development left in his game and body though.

James Huts - Doubt he will go in the national draft, unlikely to go in the rookie draft imo. Looks to be in that in between height, decent skills, rebound a bit average and not the greatest of defenders from what I have seen. There are better options available, but could be a chance.

Membrey - Late first/early second round player, suffers from being at that height where he won't be a KPF at AFL level, yet plays his best footy in the underage comp as the main target. But good enough to play through the midfield and could be a great mid sized player at AFL level. I wouldn't be adverse to Brisbane using a second round pick on him if available, but there are a few players I would like their. Also has really improved his second efforts and defensive game as the season has gone on which will help his draft position.

If the Nine Network have any credibility they should drop TAC Cup future stars. Tom Lee so early is a joke.

Nick Murphy from South Adelaide is worth drafting IMO. Anyone else seen him play.
Thoughts?

I'm of the same opinion. Jaksch moves well for a key position player and has above average skills compared to most 'talls' and if we were targeting a key position player, would have no problem if we brought him in.

I can't really comment on what certain players are worth because this is the only TAC game I have seen all year, but based off one game, liked Jaksch alot. The tattooed forward for Gippsland was also good, but looks pretty one dimensional say compared to Jaksch who can go back.

Apologies Bert, not sure who Rory Atkins was, but Macrae does look a classy type.

One left.

Elliott, Clarke, Boumann, Morris, Milera, Saad, Kennedy, Mohr and Brown were taken last year.

Warming to Macrae at 8. I always like the players who have a strong finish to the year, as they well and truly show what they're capable of as well as how quickly they can develop. Means you get them cheaper than you would've if they played that way all year too.

I remember hearing about him in last years GF kicking 7 and was excited to see how he went, like others, this year. Didn't have a great nationals but from the two games I saw the delivery into the 50 wasn't the greatest. Looking at his figures this year he has kicked on average 4 goals a game with limited disposals. Jaeksch doesn't have the anywhere near the impact on the board as Shaw does. If we were to go for Shaw at 8 I wouldn't be too upset. Go along way to building our spine. 23 and pick 30 we would need to get a KPD, more fullback to CHB.

Jaeksch spends time in defence so to base a comparison purely on scoreboard impact is unfair. He presents far greater versatility.

The one thing that I find many are forgetting is that in the 1st round we will as we do every year take 'the best player available'. Based on the championship that Shaw had I highly doubt that he will rank even in our Top 12 let alone 8. If a midfielder is there that we rank at 8 or better they will be selected, and the needs selection will be kept for the compensation pick & onwards.

continuing on with the best available discussion i wonder what would happen if grundy is somehow still available at 8 if brisbane keep it

would be very interesting

I'm not the type to get too caught up in who we draft but I would be very, very disappointed if we take another ruckman with a first round selection. And, unless Longer proves to be totally hopeless, I will have this opinion for the next 5-8 years!

Can't imagine we would take a ruck with first round selection. We need a top up ruckman to replace Huddo when he decides to retire. We can't afford to wait 3-4 yrs for a draftee to develop. Need some one who can come in straight away to cover Leunberger or Longer if injured.

I'll be very surprised if Grundy slips to us. Very different to last year when only 2 teams had picks ahead of us.
