2012 Draft Discussion

I do also think we will go best available. The gap between the mids and the best KPP seems to be too far, and i can't see us using 8 for such a player, not when we will probably be able to grab a decent prospect with 24 or 33 and still get that gun mid at 8. If you want a mid and a KPP out of the draft, surely mid at 8 and KPP at 24 is the order you would go.

For me, our pick 24 will be telling, i think 8 is best available, but we will have to weigh up a few options at 24 depending on who is left, and it's much harder to judge that this year. We could go tall or small and will depend on who slides. With another pick at 33, we will take into consideration what players are likely to be left here as well before reading out our pick 24. We could certainly do worse than Jaksch at 8 and Lonergan at 24, i'd be pretty happy with that, but at the same time, can't help but notice the likes of Shaw, Smith and White still not taken at 33 in FootyTragic's phantom. Surely a Wines at 8 and 1 of those 3 talls at 33 would be the way to go.

I still question whether or not we will worry too much about KPP with our first batch of academy kids to come through next year. Tickner especially looking likely up forward for us. Just not sure the club will feel as rushed to get a KPP in as it might have in the past. We made a big play for Hogan for obvious reasons, along with Tippett, but outside of getting a true genuine gun key forward, i just can't see us taking someone we don't rate in the same caliber. I think we would rather back in what we have and our academy kids, rather than reach for just a possibly 'good' KPP, especially at the expense of not drafting a possibly 'great' mid.

Simply from what I've read I'm hoping we get one of Shaw or White, leaning more towards White for the entertainment factor. A big, quick KFP that is a good shot on goal and can take contested marks seems like a no-brainer for me, but I'm mainly just thinking about who would be the most fun to watch play.

Would it be fair to say that when clubs have multiple picks in the top ten, particularly consecutive ones, it makes predicting who will go early more difficult? Take the Bulldogs for example. They are free to take a best available and a needs, or two best, or two needs from the players they rate top ten anyway. With us there is no choice, if we rate the player best available at our pick 8, there is no chance they will be available at 24.

Lets just say I have been mentally blocking Wines out thinking that he is a dead cert to go to the Dee's. If he slid to the Lions I would jump with joy. He is the exact type of player we need. I would be interested to find out why FootyTragic doesn't think we would select him if he was available. He said in Oliver Wines write up that if he gets past Melbourne he thinks he will land at Richmond because the only other club that will seriously consider him is Port.

I also think we are the 'easy' pick for Jaksch in most mock drafts. If we don't take him, he probably slides down a bit, we are probably the easy choice. Would love Wines if he somehow made it to us.

If the club goes with Jaksch then i'll support that decision. I'm not expert on these players, no nothing outside what is posted in phantom and mock drafts. His flexibility might be a draw card for us. I certainly won't be disappointed if we pick him, i just don't think we will. But you never know.

This is not a crack at Kerr and Hadley but last year when we picked Longer I didn't jump for joy. I back our staff in as I do for all of the parts people play in our club. Selfishly, I want to have that, 'you lil beauty' feeling with our first pick, possibly all of them. The best part is when Kerr writes up his dosier as to why they chose the players they did and I think, of course!
In relation who I would want at 8 I've had so many 'wants' at that pick it's not funny and can see how they could add to our team. However, Jaksch, you aren't one of them.

I agree with pretty much everything, except replace "Jaksch" with "Plowman". ;)

I like a lot of the smalls likely to be around at pick 8 but I certainly won't be throwing the toys out of my cot if our guys opt for Jaksch. Willing to back the pros in.

I find it's too easy to adopt Bigfooty groupthink as law, even if you are trying not to.

What if Jaksch is drafted before pick 8? Do we reach for another KPP?

Just throwing it out there.

Can't see it happening. The club has been pretty consistent in taking who it rates. Unless it rates a KPP very significantly higher than the rest of the AFL, I think it'd be Jaksch or Plowman or no other KPP.

Yeah. And it isn't like Kerr hasn't warned us that there are divergent opinions. Statements like "I can't see us passing on X" or "There's no way Y will be available at our pick" are fraught with danger normally but this year it seems especially so.

I'm getting myself for the possibility that we're on a totally different wavelength to the popular view.

Could Josh Simpson be a smoky for pick 8?

I think he'd add something a bit more different to the side than Macrae would.

I have been thinking this but I have been keeping those thoughts to myself. He doesn't seem like the player the Lions would go for but you never know. I prefer other players for us at 8 but I would be over the moon if he slipped to 24. Not going to happen though.

EQ is probably the best of the journos wrt the draft but it is worth remembering that she is a Victorian who writes for a Victorian paper and who sees mostly Champs and TAC games. She has a big Victorian bias and she always rates the Victorian boys high especially the character kids.

Her info on where guys are going comes mostly from teams saying what they think others are doing, the kids themselves, the managers and wrt to the Victorians the schools. I don't think she gets really solid info from inside teams. Burgen was doing this for years previously and the clubs have gotten better at disguising their targets and there is a lot more misinformation out there nowadays.

FWIW my gut feeling about who we will go with at 8 - Stringer.

I wonder if Vossy's broken leg may have any influence on the recruitment of Stringer.

Would you be happy with that Quigs?

Personally I would be as I believe we are at the point we can start taking risks like that. People are struggling to name a round 1 team next year to fit blokes in. Long gone are the days where we required our first pick to be playing round 1 the following year.

If he is likely to make a full recovery from his broken leg then I would be all for Stringer. If he becomes the type of player he potentially could be he would suit our needs very well I reckon.
