Can I ask how many times you've seen Wines, Garlett and Stringer play?

Probably as many times as the Talia-tragics watched Lucas, Fyfe, Menzel and Jetta play in 2009 before they grunted "Get KPP who is well known on internet".

I wouldn't be happy to pass on a silky matchwinner and super freak like Yarran to get a Robinson, Rich, Sloane, Beams or Ziebell.

You don't watch a lot of Carlton games if you think we have enough good kicks in the side.

Hawthorn rule applies here because left footers are the only good kicks playing today...

If you watched the Malthouse interview I posted in the other thread, then you would know that Mick has a good development record and affinity with indigenous players.

You're still implying that Wines isn't a good kick. I think he is, and yes I know we need more good kicks in the team, so getting a ball winner like Wines who is a good kick would be a no brainer as opposed to an idiot who will most likely go missing when the going gets tough.

As for those Talia "tragics", they were right, he was the right option for us as it turns out, done a shitload more than Lucas.

Could've thrown Hendo forward with Talia playing as our second KPD along with Jamison.

Not if he gets himself into trouble or finds he's not up to the rigors of professional football. I really like the look of his football, but am wary of his character, clubs would absolutely feel the same way.
Saw photos from instagram and I am not impressed, I hope we don't draft him. Having the photos up says a lot about him.A big no for me.

You're spot on the tanks. I would pick Wines with the drop of the hat, because the kid is a tough, hard working ball winner and if he is still available at pick 11, I'd call that a steal

Don't know how either comment is relevant.Much will be said and written about dozend of draftees in the lead up...the fact remains that only a handful of people across the entire BF community know what they are talking about. Talia 'tragics' making out like nostra-****ing-damus at present. Would have been a profound addition to the list.

I would in just about every instance listed.

Have you see them play like I asked?

I haven't.

I didn't say Wines was a bad kick. I'm talking about the talent of the respective players. There's no 100% right or 100% wrong option if you get a player who will be in your best 22.

It's relevant because you've got to back your recruiters to pick their best available player after sitting through all the terrible games.

I can see another supporter meltdown if we don't get a hard midfielder.

Phil Davis is a better tall prospect than Talia, yet I wouldn't have overlooked Yazz to get him.

I wouldn't if we ranked Yarran higher like we did. Different player types, but Yarran has more skill, vision, pace and tricks than the lot of them. Special talent who knows he can back it up. Put Richmond and Collingwood to the sword with his brilliance.

No haven't seen Garlett play live. But from all reports, he's an idiot.

off-field issues have placed a question mark over Garlett's prospects.

The Herald Sun can reveal Garlett, who was a dominant player at last year's under-18 national championships averaging 19 touches, has been left out of the AIS/AFL squad to tour Europe next month.

The decision was made in conjunction with some of Garlett's closest mentors to help address matters and resurrect his football career at WAFL club Swan Districts.

Dayle is the kind of kid who will excite crowds by getting an outside handball, taking two bounces down the wing and kicking the goal from 55m," Davini said.

Sorry, but if you watched our losses this year, surely you would understand that we lacked a prolific ball winner with decent decision making ability and high work rate. We don't need another outside receiver who's going to go missing again when teams come at us physically.

We lost the clearance count to GWS ffs.

As for seeing Wines and Stringer play, yes I have, admittedly not much but based on what I've seen so far those guys have a real hunger for the contest and won't go missing when we need someone to step up.

Why is Davis a better prospect than Talia? That's a really early call don't you think?

Yarran isn't a headcase like Garlett is.

We have Carrazzo, Judd, Scotland and Simpson all getting to a stage where their careers haven't got much life left. We need to draft players that will be ready to fill in once they retire. Passing on a talented ball winner like Wines, for an outside receiver like Garlett would be a clear mistake. Just like passing on a talented KPD when we were desperately in need of one to select an outside receiver was a clear mistake.

Drafting is a gamble. Freo took Hill over Rich and everyone thought that they were made. Wines could go on to play 10 games and Garlett 200 who knows; guess we just have to have faith in the recruiters

Garlett

Textbook WC draft tampering 101. Expect him to be arrested in a nightclub fight within the next 2 weeks so he slips to pick 20. Exactly the type of player they need.

Darling did actually have his skull cracked in a fight, which is a legitimate injury concern and part of the reason he slipped. It's not like every club just thought he was a bad boy

Garlett is actually a huge Hawks fans and as mentioned previously, liked a group on his facebook called "I Hate the West Coast Eagles".

Not sure he'd be happily dealing with them.

But it is like every club wishes they had grabbed him. Definitely the star of his draft so far.

I'm with TG on this. For all the wailing and gnashing of teeth about our hardness, it our skills that have killed us more often than not this year: kicking straight to our opponents or to nobody at all, missing targets, turning it over. The Gold Coast game was lost courtesy of more butchery than an abbatoir. I want players who are hard at it too, but if they can't kick well I don't want them within a mongerel punt of the club.

And Matty Kreuzer comes from a Collingwood family. I am sure when you get drafted to stay in your home state and stay near your family you can get over it.

Mick has stated his requirements, we need hard inside mids to give Juddy a chop out. Forget any two bob outside mids or HBFs. Big bodied insiders will be our first picks. He did it with Luke Ball and he will do it for us. Look at our clearance stats in the 2nd half of the season we were crap

So we'll draft inside midfielders to help Judd out now even though they won't be playing high level AFL football for at least 3 years, by which time Judd will likely have retired?

Reckon that burden will fall on the current mob and anyone we trade in or pick up in FA

I meant it in that he wouldn't be so happy to agree with the supposed draft tampering that posters are suggesting and that the concerns are real

Sound point, though the seemingly recent notion of midfielders being purely inside or outside shits me a wee bit. All the best mids do a fair bit of both...

Good post. Inject Walker and Gibbs into our midfield and it is looking impressive as is. Caddy would also be a terrific addition.

Get some inside mids via draft or trade this year for sure, but first round draft picks go to best available players for mine (that includes Caddy), with speed and kicking skills paramount, as Shane Rogers says.

Guys, the reason we're after midfielders this year is to build our midfield for when Judd, Simpson, Carrazzo and Scotland are gone. There's no rush to get someone in to help out with the clearances next year, the reason we were smashed at clearances all season was because we were outnumbered at stoppages and the coach persisted with playing men behind the ball instead. I thought everyone knew that.

The other thing is people are acting like the first round pick is our only pick in the draft. We just got bell in the rookie draft and he's certainly one of our inside mids for the future. I listed Vlastuin as one I'd love with our first pick but if we did opt for a Garlett/Simpson type we could still get Pongracic, Graham, Lonergan or quite a few others in the next few rounds.

Sorry but I disagree with you. Braddles was a great mid but was on the outside until his last 2 seasons. Some just don't have the core strength and mental toughness to play inside. Yes you get freaks like Juddy who can play roles inside and outside but not very often.

The kid seems supremely stupid. I shudder at the thought of people searching his instagram if we draft him only to find him smoking and drinking in almost every photo. He'd have to stop everything he seems to enjoy if he were to take up football professionally. Could slide past 20. The more of his off field stuff I see, the less I like him.

When are the pics from Zee? Here is a good article written in early July.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/garlett-seeks-a-better-state-20120702-21daf.html

Garlett has moved back home, he now has a girlfriend and he has started working for the David Wirrpanda Foundation, spending time in schoolrooms with kids. He has been hitting the gym five times a week and, as part of the Swan Districts senior team, trying to work on his chasing and tackling.

''The recruiters ask me, how's my outside life doing - if I've picked it up a notch. I've given them a good result just by doing that well.

I think an inside mid and a tall defender should really be on the cards for us. Wines is looking the right stuff hope we give him a look.

Anyone but Garlett really, everytime I see him he is intoxicated and driving. I do think moving state and getting him away from his family would help, and he can be quite a nice guy, but I just hope it isn't our club that picks him... haha.
