I don't understand the Strauss hate here. Are people just looking for a scapegoat? FFS, the kid broke his leg late last year and still managed to come back for a good number of games and show a fair bit. Lord knows I wouldn't want to be in that backline trying to make my way as an AFL player.

He'll be alright.

I dont hate Strauss, i just think he isnt any good.

I thought this before he broke his leg as well. Nothing has changed since.

Like i said, there isnt one instance in any game where he has done something for me to get excited about. Defensive skills at the moment are pretty bad and his kicking isnt close to as good as advertised. Will be nothing more than a depth player IMO.

Maybe you see what you want to see, which is easy enough when we have 60 I50s against us every week. Maybe I do too, but I don't think you're on the money at all.

His defensive skills are fine so far, especially for someone who, after his first two games in 2010, was said to be as soft as butter and not one for the tough stuff. They will improve, in the same way Blease came from a base of 100% attacking play and is now learning the other side of the equation.

As for his kicking skills, I've seen plenty of examples of precise disposal. Certainly none of the clangers that we expect from half the rest of the team. But again, as I said, I wouldn't want to be under the pump in the MFC back line, where pressure is constant and effective disposal to teammates is rare. So I'd say it's hard to expect young Strauss to be hitting targets with the precision of Suckling or Birchall at the Hawks when he is given a quarter of the time and space.

I reckon it says a lot that he held his spot for the majority of the second half of the year - heads rolled around him, but yet this apparently talentless soft hack kept his place in the team. Give him time to learn composure and decision-making, and for the midfield to pull their weight defensively, and he will come good.

As i said Jack, just my opinion.

Even at an early age you can usually catch a glimpse of something in a young player that tells you he will be good. Im yet to see it from Strauss, i saw it in Blease.

Yeah I missed that bit that TPM said there... I don't think it's completely necessary to 'see something' early to say that someone will be a player. And I'm sure the reverse is true too (ahem Cale). No he will never be a star, match-winning player, but on what I've seen IMO he can definitely be that Mackie or Lindsay Gilbee type as TPM said. Every team needs them, no one has 18 star players each week.

If he gets to the Mackie or Gilbee heights during his career id take that any day.

I just dont even see that.

Agreed. I think it'll take a while for him to get back to full confidence considering his injury. I think he's shown enough last year pre-injury and this year since coming back to be allowed to stick around a while longer.

Yep, and I certainly don't see the point of cutting him from the list unless it was to free up a spot for a high quality senior body. Another draft pick to get a younger version of the same player (which we need desperately)? No thanks.

Can't believe people are saying Spencer. I thought he showed this year he has potential, plus ruckmen normally take a while to come on.

Granted he has floors, but he showed enough heart that he will maximise his potential

People are 'saying Spencer' because we have Fitzpatrick Gawn Clark Jamar Martin and potentially Grundy. I'm gonna argue that all 6 of these players would already be more developed (maybe not Gawn) than Spencer. Don't get me wrong, he has definately improved, I'm just not sure we can have all these talls on the list.

Throw in Sellar, who will probably get another year.

I suppose Neeld is making it his mission to give up on most first round draft picks under Bailey...

If players like Bate survive I don't even know what I'll do.

Apologies for the intrusion. I know nothing about Cook's form, but it seems slightly strange that you would let go a first round key position player. Is it his weight issue (lack of) or has he shown nothing at VFL?

A combination of both - he has a huge amount of physical development left in him, he's had some good games at VFL level but not enough.

I would rather keep him.

Has skill, can mark, can kick.

Has no heart, no confidence and is softer than Cale Morton

Please cut / trade / delist any players incapable of putting on weight

I reckon Neeld has asked Misson who can or can't realistically bulk up to AFL standard in the next 12 - 18 months and I reckon Cook, Morton and Gysberts are on that list, so Cook is gone, and I reckon Gysberts will be traded, Morton who knows, but we cannot continue to carry this many lean tall players. You can have a couple if they are also high quality footy players, think Andrew Mackie, but we already have that with Watts (still to prove high quality status of course).

Disagree with this, just dont think he is developed enough atm.

I would personally start dleisting the duds who have had 4-8 years to come good, ie Bate,Dunn Petterd

And Davis to an extent before Cook and Gysberts

Not even Brent Grgic was softer than Morton.

I don't want Cook to be another Travis Johnstone, where we wait 10 years for him to come good and it never happens.

Neeld can spot talent. And I'll trust him if he thinks Cook is not part of the plan
