Opinion 2012 Rookie Draft

I don't know much about Byron Sumner other than he was on Sydney list. Is he a running outside type or a small forward?

We could do with either really and the fact that he is a left footer is a bonus. He is still young and has plenty of time on his side. We really need to make our picks count for the next couple of years.

Has jolly been invited out to train with you guys? There was talk he was coming out to train at port, but was sick atm. But he hasnt appeared on the permission to train list

Given our loss of picks this year & pontially more in future years, it becomes obvious we need to do very well out of the rookie draft over the next few years to keep up with the competition in bringing new talent in. Pick wisely AFC!

Byron Sumner vs Vic Metro - 2009 AFL U19 Championships

Like his intensity. Only limited footage, but shows glimpses of that 'Petrenko like' endeavour.
Although looks to have better foot skills than pets which is a plus ;)
Apologies if this link has already been posted.

 no posts since Tuesday on the upcoming PSD & rookie draft .....how sad

Reiterate my preference in order:
Sumner - he's got talent to burn if he's dedicated ....worth a rookie spot IMO
KPD - have no idea who in the state leagues might be floating our kite ....but there's a need
Irra - granted had a bad year .....but talents there and he has the speed we need IF Tambling can't change the way he plays

In addition to the names I have also put forward in related threads I would like us to consider Leigh Osborne. He is currently training with Gold Coast but if he slips to us he will be pushing for a spot in the 22 from round 1. Mature aged, outside player with good skills and a bit of speed.

If he is still available: Callum Bartlett.

Brisbane will probably pick him up again before us but if not I would love to see this bloke on our list.

First post since the end of the Tippett saga. ;)

Toy is training with Richmond and always said he wanted to go back to Melbourne. Not worth the risk of picking up another player and then having them complain about wanting to go home....

From all reports Sumner is someone worth taking a risk on. Has played well for the eagles in local footy, but as mentioned there is a lot of talent available. Would be nice to have a small forward with some pace that will be developed by the time callinan hangs up the boots in a couple of years.

Would love to take Sam Colquoan out from under Port's nose like we did with Milera, but as mentioned earlier he isnt the sort of player we need. Donuts is gone, but it sounds like Luke Brown or someone else will fit into that role.

Personally like other years I believe that we should be looking at local talent first so we dont have more Gunston's and Tippetts where we put all the hard work into their development then lose them. Rookie drafts are worth taking that gamble so lets take that gamble on our backyard!

Colquoan is training nowwith Essendon .....not that means anything as they've been in the market this year for any player with 2 legs.

Agree with homegrown for Rookie as a rule ......12 month contract is tough without having to change states.
You want players settled in the first year so a proper assessment can be made.

There's plenty here to choose from IMO.

Still think a speedy player is a preference ......but the KPP ? keeps rearing its head if Rutten gets injured?

Do we go insurance policy or team advancement?

Like Sumner, always did when he was at Sydney .....he was in my SC team due to a splendid PS couple of games where he looked "special" ........then promptly didn't play a home & away game:oops:

Sumner does have something special about it, its just whether he has the endevour.

Irra, could be electric. Is very mature for a young bloke. Can go missing in games. Has only been playing the game for a short time in conmparison.

Agree with Sumner, I would be very happy if we selected him.

Sam Colquoan's management have signed a deal with Port accordng to the Advertiser.

Irra is interesting and typical of many players ...... has had one good year, one bad year
So which year do you make the assessment on?

Just think he or Sumner give us that speedy X-Factor that Tambling should be providing but WON'T (versus cant)

Just wish tambling would tuck the ball under his arms ala Mackay and use his main weapon .......but he refuses to use his primary strength (his pace) ???????

Why on earth would we pass on a rookie selection in the current climate.

Let's pick up Byron and watch him and LJ play leading roles in our 2013 GF win over the Swans!!!

Ooh....now THAT would be delicious ;)
