Sounds like Garlett needs more than a mentor, he needs a 24/7 minder

Re Jarrah, I'll rather hold off for 12 months and wait the outcome of his court case

Sumner to me has plenty of upside with less off field risk attached that Macca could mentor

Doesn't really matter.

What matters is that the AFC has absolutely no interest in Garlett or Jurrah, and both of them have but a single possible lifeline as rookie selections at one club each. Nobody else is interested, everyone else has washed their hands. Should speak volumes.
Well in Jurrah's case only two clubs can be interested since he moved to SA and wishes to stay there.

Garlett faces second draft snub December 9, 2012 12:00AM

GIFTED WA youngster Dayle Garlett is facing the prospect of being snubbed for the second time in Tuesday's AFL rookie draft.
Garlett, named in the under-18 All-Australian team this year, had been expected to win a lifeline from Essendon.
The Bombers invited the Swan Districts product to train with them after he was overlooked in the national draft and are yet to make a final decision but are leaning against drafting the potential star.
"No doubt there's a lot of talent there and the way he plays his football excites everyone," Essendon coach James Hird said.
"We've just got to work out whether someone like Dayle fits our group."
The Garlett situation will play out this week against a backdrop of increasing debate over the apparent reluctance of AFL clubs to recruit indigenous players.
Recruiters around the country were of the view that the 18-year-old was a first-round draft pick based on talent alone, but Garlett has been dogged by bad publicity over off-field issues.
He was kicked out of the elite AIS-AFL Academy last summer and missed several WAFL games through internal club suspensions. Social media photos of him drinking and smoking did further harm to his reputation.
No other AFL club, including local teams West Coast and Fremantle, appears willing to take a punt on him....

Given the situation we're in drafting wise as a result of our penalties, I think we should go high risk high reward here, and take Garlett with our one and only rookie pick.

Take him and allocate him to Andrew McLeod to be not only his mentor in football but his mentor in life.

If it comes off we'll have got ourselves a top ten draft pick to help cover next year's drafting losses, and if it doesn't we move him on, as the majority of rookies end up doing.

Definitely worth a crack IMO.

What a load of sh@t comment (the bolded bit). He wont get selected because he's allegedly a dick not because of his race. Journalists starting to make inroads on used car salesman in the integrity stakes.

I fear this is the case, all the clubs appear to have been well scared off by this kid which tends to suggest there's more to this than has been made public.

You'd think we would have to take the gamble. If it pays off, we cover some of our losses for the picks we handed in this year. If not, just cut him at the end of the year.

If I am correct Darling of the W Coast was meant to have attitude issues. The clubs ignored him and W Coast picked him for a steal. If the lad has talent then he has something to work with. Kicking his arse and showing him the errors of his way might take some time but might also be rewarding. Would A Mcleod take him under his wing.

Its hard enough finding gems but when you do you dont throw them away because they come with some dirt on them

Jack Darling was a kid with attitude issues in the same mould as Mitch Morton and the Cornes brothers, touted as a first rounder or even top 3 pick, who slid all the way to the end of the first round at pick 26.

Garlett is a kid with attitude issues beyond what Darling had, let alone everything else, touted as a first round draft pick with supreme talent and he slid past both Fremantle and West Coast - the teams with undoubtedly the best connections and information - who didn't even make eye contact with him, all the way out of the draft. Not just to the end of the first round, he slid so far that he's gone past the recycles and questionable rookie upgrades, and into the rookie draft where only one club saying maybe they'll take him, if they can get over his issues, but they need to think about it first.

Think about that for a while.

Like you've said though, I can't see Adelaide having the balls to have a crack at him which is very disappointing. Hopefully Bailey is trying to talk him into it as I seem to recall him having a very good relationship with Jurrah at Melbourne.
That's a factor I hadn't thought of; could certainly be influential.

Only thing to remember with Jurrah otherwise is that despite his 40 goal season in 2011 he is no key position forward, or more aptly a Tippett replacement.

At ~188cm he is probably more suited to the Porplyzia/Henderson role of medium lead up forward. Which should be no issue with his excellent kicking, soft hands and above average pace.

Didn't it come out that he left SA to go back to country WA because he has a kid up there?

That's Simpson, who Freo drafted in the first round.

NT Rabbit is correct the AFC have already ruled out Garlett and Jurrah unfortunately. I would have loved us to go for either, particularly with our draft sanctions.

I think Byron is ahead of the likes of Garlett and Jurrah because he has had his issues, but we can see evidence that he has picked himself up and dedicated himself to getting back on a list.

He obviously has talent, but he now has the steely will to succeed at not let it go to waste. in this regard he is a year ahead of the the other 2.

I read today he is firmly on our radar. let's reward his application and reap the reward of a talent who would otherwise be on a list already.

Siggins may make it, hard to know at this stage.

As for the others, Talia has enough height, but I think the rest of them are too short to play FB. And I think Talia is too useful to waste at FB.

I'd really like to see us recruit a developing tall, gorilla defender. Siggins has the height but as far as I can tell he's more of a running defender than a stay-at-home full back. Of course, it's hard to develop required players when your first selection is in the 60s...
Hmm well the height and weight stats suggest that they could if you compare against Talia and Rutten.

Talia - 196cm, 95kg
Rutten - 192kn, 101kg
Thompson - 196cm, 89kg
Otten - 194cm, 92kg
Shaw - 194cm, 96kg
Lynch - 192cm, 87kg

If one of those guys can put the weight on a little then there is no reason why they could play that KPP role I feel.
Our defence against Hawthorn was brilliant and look at who was playing in that game. No Talia, No Shaw VS Franklin, Roughead and Gunston.

I think there is more than enough there to work with and we should be looking elsewhere with the pick.

Agree that height isn't the issue with these guys, it's size and pure shut down ability. Thompson I think has the potential, he just needs to add a good 5-8kgs to his frame. Shaw I think could hold down CHB, however I think his spot is as a third tall. For a guy who hadn't played footy for 2 years, his ability to step up this year was extremely promising. Otten I'm not sure quite has the mindset for a KPD post, I think there's too much of an attacking mindset, but is possible. Lynch isn't a key position player, he's a tall flanker/winger, he's far too weak in contested marking situations.

I do like the look of Siggins though and if Jenkins doesn't work out as a key forward, he could also fill this role.

Nick Rodda

Birthdate:

6 Jul 1994
Height: 194cm
Weight: 94kg
Recruited: West Perth
State:
WA

Even though we have a few KPD i think at a rookie spot another tall is worth the risk, KPD players can be handy to trade down the track. Rodda to me seems to fit a full back position

My uneducated opinion is to swing to the fences and take Garlett. Give him a lot of support and mentoring off the field and it just might be the home run that off-sets our draft penalties. There is too much talent for us to not take the punt.

Give him a chance to get himself sorted for 12 months. If he does not make significant improvements in those 12 months, adios amigo!

Now if he again gets overlooked by every club in the PSD and RD, then to me that suggests there is a lot more to the story that just hitting the piss and smoking. As a football public we are not privy to a lot of things that are "known" within the industry. If no club takes the shot then that tells us the kid is genuinely a lost case.

I would just love to see us hit a home run with this pick. In times when our leadership and culture are questions I would love to see the club stand up and say FU to the rest of the footy world and pick the kid that no one else had the balls to do and it would be even sweeter and the punt came off.

Would love to grab Jurrah. It is a Rookie spot, so any negative outcome of his case wont affect us that much.

If we wait 12 months and he plays well his price goes up if he puts in a good year. He wants to stay in SA now, but what happens if Collingwood get in his ear while he is playing well at SANFL level.

I wonder if the Crows have their eye on any mature-aged SANFL defenders? Realistically we should be looking at challenging for a premiership in 2013 and defence is our biggest area of weakness. If someone goes down, can we cover it?
I very much doubt it. I think we are looking at diamonds in the rough here. Experienced defenders would not be on our radar, especially since we have an early pick.

I am sure that AFC are covering their bases here and a few players already on the list are training as key defenders during the PS (eg Jenkins).

Would much rather Garlett then Jurrah.
Take him away from WA and any poor influences he has over there could do him the world of good.

I find it so ironic that Jurrah may get a lifeline after axing a bloke to his head, whilst Fev is never to return for liking beer. What a joke.

The whole Matt Rendell thing brings up a point that i think needs looking at, that these boys need a bit of extra TLC when it comes to being drafted. Im backing however that if Jurrah wasnt Aboriginal a line would be through his name for life.

Come on stabby, we all know our biggest weakness was ruck, and we filled that gaping hole with Graham! Problem solved!

A unknown kid by the name of "Mason Middleton" I rekon is worth a shot. Has been playing KPF & KPD in west adelaide reserves & a couple senior matches in 2012. He is 18 years old & stands 192cm's tall & weighs 96kg allready. the kid is a unbeleivable athlete & allready has amazing size & strength. Would love to see him in a crows gurnsey. SA born & bred so no go home factor aswellif he makes the senior list. Mason Middleton would make a great fit for the future

Is that fact ....or what we'd like to see as supporters????

Hope Jenkins is training as a defender
