I have a couple of personal favorites... (McCarthy being one).... don't believe they'll last to our pick so I just hope that we end up with a good one. HBF said it - too many ways this can shape out. The Bulldogs are considering half a dozen prospects and they're at 4. The AFL Draft machine usually has 13 or 14 names (tops) that could go in the top ten has 18 this year.

I'll have to get back to you on that one C4.
I actually can't remember a year where after the top 2 there could be any number of different ways the top 10 could fall out.
You only have to look at Aish & Bontempelli to see that that they could go anywhere in that top 10-12

Thanks HBF.

No names, because they are friends. About hour ago, I was driving past the club and saw an ex-player from another club I know driving out. He had just had coffee with an ex-player of ours from the same home town we all shared. Our ex-player then drove out and in a hurry, he and the other, had a few quick tidbits for me.

Confirmed we had gone to WA to talk to Cripps. Also spoke to a couple of other WA kids whilst there. One was McCarthy. They both see Cripps as a Judd replacement. Rated highly around league apparently. Club looking at multiple big mid options but player chosen won't be a project, want a first gamer. I said Freeman, Sheed, Scharenberg etc. They both said, Sheed is the player WCE dropped down the order for and will be available and selected. They said a given. If Scharenberg slips, too hard for us to overlook him, a gun. Freeman looks to be the option for MEL. Said that Crouch was under consideration, too good a player not to, but depends heavily on what draft dictates. In Draft we should they expect a few mids selected. Depending on what's available at 39, may be mid or a KP/Ruck type then select a mature age mid at 51. They want speed, but versatility.
Have spoken to Thorp, but not a priority. Will see how draft unfolds. May be a option at 51 depending on what falls to 39. Neither actually rated him worth a ND pick interestingly.
Aaron Cornelius spoken to, along with a few other delisted players, no names given. Rookie spots only.
Suggestion we may still adjust our list prior to end of draft period. Another option being looked at.

Thanks for sharing .... and I don't doubt that this happened but .... I really don't think current players (let alone ex players) would have any clue what the thoughts are of the recruiting team (and who we have/haven't spoken to), and what our plan is for the draft.

So we may take any on of half a dozen players at 12. 39 may be a mid or a KP or a ruck. A few delisted players spoken to.

Good to have the inside word.

Don't mind people passing on any info they hear K-Man.......kinda what drives the wheels of these threads.

Can't wait for the Told You So thread, should be up early Thursday arvo. :)

Agree.

But I just wish the whole premise of the post was that Lennon was locked in and we should start a Welcome to Carlton thread for the boy.

Thanks HBF.

I can do better than that C4.
I'll see if I can get it on your desk today.
Gives me something to do in my lunch break, other than listening to everyone b.itch and moan here at work.

I'm trying to get myself mentally prepared for the drafting of Dumont - by watching his highlights over and over.

... and now I'm doing the same with Patty Cripps.
GET CRIPPS.

Just think of the potential usernames.

Interview and highlights

My write up for Patrick Cripps. I am a little surprised he was here as I rated him top 15 and above the likes of Dunstan, Taylor, Marsh and Gardiner.

Pick 20: Gold Coast – Patrick Cripps
Height: 192cm, Weight: 90kg, DOB: 18/03/1995
Club: East Fremantle (WA)

Gold Coast is a team that has very few holes at this stage with so much young talent so this is a best available pick. At this stage Patrick Cripps represents excellent value imo as a big bodied inside mid who is capable of dominating in contested situations but is improving his spreading from the contest and outside game generally. I think he will take a little bit more time to develop in the two’s, primarily to work on his outside ability, versatility and just to tighten up his disposal, but he is capable of having an impact to some extent in his first year. Cripps has had a very good year this year both in the U18 champs, where he made All Australian, and at WAFL Colts level where he has dominated at times. Throughout the U18 champs Cripps showed that he was a very good inside player and capable of winning clearances and contests, as he averaged 6 clearances a game. He has also shown the ability to spread well from the contest and along with his disposal this has really improved throughout the year. Personally I think that Cripps could be a bit of a hidden gem in this year’s draft and turn out to be one of the better inside mids.

Strengths
  • Inside Game – Patrick is one of the best inside players in the draft and probably ranks second behind Crouch for mine as far as pure clearance winners are concerned. His hands in close are exceptional, he is very clean, he reads the ball well and makes excellent quick decisions. He also has the strength and size at 188cm to stand up in tackles, absorb hits and lay tackles. I think he has the capabilities to be an above average clearance player and part of a strong midfield group going forward.
  • Strength/power – Cripps looks to be pretty strong already, he is a very good size for an inside mid at 192cm and 90kg and seems to have a fair bit of power. He appears be quite quick off the mark and has a good initial burst (not elite but more power in that he can break tackles). I think he will develop into a powerful inside mid along the lines of David Mundy.
  • Decision Making/footy smarts – Cripps makes good decisions with ball in hand and has an excellent footy brain imo. He will be the type of player who makes those around him look better as he is excellent at giving the ball to those in better positions than himself in stoppages and makes quick decisions under pressure. He is also getting better at spreading from the contests and his outside game has shown some real improvement throughout the year. He is a natural ball winner and just accumulates possessions with ease.
  • Marking – Cripps looks to have the potential to develop his marking and is quite a strong mark overhead. He is strong through the core and has very clean hands so this could be a strength in the future, although at the moment he needs to use it more in contests especially now he has grown to 192cm.
  • Clean Hands – Cripps has very clean hands and rarely fumbles the footy, he is great at finding the ball and keeping his feet in contests.
Weaknesses/Areas of Improvement
  • Cripps has a kick to handball ratio of roughly 1:1, this limits his hurt factor a bit. Additionally a lot of his clearances are done with handballs not breaking away and kicking the pill forward, although towards the end of the year he was doing this a lot more and taking the game on. He is still reasonably damaging though as he tends to handball to players who are in space and able to make a good decision.
  • Kicking – Cripps is a slightly above average kick of the footy imo, although certainly not an elite kick by any stretch. He seems to have a good technique and he has definitely improved this year, but he does tend to float the ball a little to much imo, and bombs it to contests instead of hitting up the short option. There is definitely room for improvement but he does hit most of his targets.
  • Athleticism – Cripps is not a super athlete, but he is not a poor athlete either, probably just your average AFL athlete. He won’t burst out of packs or side step players with ease but that isn’t his game. Endurance wise though I think he needs to improve, he registered a 13.2 Beep test which needs improvement before he plays regular AFL footy.
  • Outside Game – Once again this area has really improved throughout the year but I still think that it is not a true strength of his and there is still some improvement left. Cripps spreads reasonably well from the contest and works hard but he is not super damaging with his outside play given that he doesn’t run with the ball much and he doesn't have elite disposal
  • Versatility – At this stage Cripps doesn’t have much versatility and only really plays as an inside player to a high standard. He could do with really developing his outside game and in particular his forward play as he has shown an ability to push forward and kick goals at Colts level. This would take his game to the next level.
Could be an astute pick in what looks to be an even draft. Big boy who looks smart enough to keep his arms free and feed it out like the game's best tall mids. Character might be the clincher.

At 192cm & 90kg, Cripps is already a beast.

He doesn't fit the 'running, outside player' criteria that Malthouse suggested we need more of, but a kid of this size really gives you something to work with. I would have to defer to those better versed in the potential draftees as to whether Cripps would be too much of a reach at 13, taking into account he won't be around at 39.

This criteria was repeated by Mckay on radio a couple of weeks ago. He said pick 13 will be used on the best available outside mid.

So, who fits this criteria that could be around at our pick?

I loathe it when a team telegraphs their draft pick not to mention when they draft need over best available.

Like when Richmond put Reece Conca up on their webpage three days before the draft?

Already added outside players and runners in Thomas, Docherty and Everitt. Might go for two power mids with 13 and 39. Players with superior awareness and poise than Bell and Robinson.

Cripps looks a footballer like Mclean who can't run out of sight on a dark night. Yet keeps finding the ball and bobbing up in space because he runs to the right spots.

Shame this might be an even draft like 2009. Plenty of onballers and running flankers taken in that draft. We've got Thomas, but another top 25 pick wouldn't have gone astray.

I've changed my mind..... again.... I want Blake Acres, only so we can call him BlAcres

I want him just so I can call him Shady...

*esoteric line for all those Ace Ventura die hards out there...

Let's just say, this ex-player, played in the 80/90's and works out at the club 5 days a week. I'm thinking he might know a few people, including the Prez who he played with. The other bloke formed his opinion from having been an assistant coach at a few clubs. I think they have a bit of an idea, not that it's anything earth shattering that they gave up, though it was like pulling teeth with those two mugs, as usual.
