I just hope if we do get a Top 3-5 pick we don't trade it..... Pick up a highly rated youngster like a Boyd (If he slides would be amazing on our list!!), Crouch etc.

Agreed, must be 100% off limits. But I'm a touch worried we'll do another 2 for 1 downgrade. Especially if GWS have another first rounder and we're deep into Adams.

Yeah i also have a feeling we'll off load it.. Also have a feeling if Boyd slides to Pick 3 (assuming that's out pick) we'll over look him. Hopefully not though!! God i love just picturing him in a saints guernsey

My way of thinking Sunshine, was that the Hawks mids Mitchell, Hodge & Sewell are all approaching 30..
And instead of the Hawks looking at a compensation pick anywhere from 1-20 (who knows), they might turn around & strike a trade instead where the Hawks might receive GWS midfielders Adams & Nick Haynes for Buddy & let's suggest pick 25.. Purely a hypothetical scenario, but one that could be pulled off if both clubs came to an agreement..

If we land picks 3 & 21, & pick 3 is off the table what player/s could we package with pick 21, that would see us snare Adams..

Personally, i'd be tapping either Gwilt or Gilbert on the shoulder..

The demand for Adams is strong, so unless we're willing to part with an experienced quality player, GWS won't come to the party..

Which brings me to Sean Dempster, he could command $350k-$400k a season for the next 2 or 3 yrs at GWS & i'd be surprised if GWS would baulk at that money..

Dempster is universally recognised as a true professional, & only recently was All Australian..!

Known not to be on big bucks at the Saints, Demps could finish his career on a 3yr $1.2m contract, at GWS, & stand to earn an extra half a million in the process..

As much as i would prefer not to trade Dempster, GWS pick up a proven quality player in Dempster,
we obtain the services of a young talented player with 30-40 games under his belt, & the likelihood of becoming an A Grade midfielder for the next 8-10 years..!!

I wasn't suggesting that they will get two picks for losing Buddy, but that they will have two top 20 picks if they lose Buddy (if FA compo is still given this year, as per last year). Aussie apologies it wasn't you I was quoting. I thought your two picks were their normal pick, plus the Buddy compo pick, the same as we had last year. I have seen main board, comments on getting two picks for Buddy, hence my question asking those who would definitely know.

Personally I would move on one of the in between players. by that I mean Qwilt and Fisher and Simpkin. Not small and fast enough to be smalls and not big enough to be KPDs. Dempster can play both and potentially tag so he stays IMO. Best trainer at the club etc..

I still think that Simpkin plays tall enough to be able to deal with normal forwards. Ie Dawes, Darling , Kennedy, Lynch, even Cloke. He will continue to struggle against the ruck type forwards like Petrie.
He's 22 , he will get bigger as he gets older. ( Blake was listed as 85Kg in around 2005 he's now listed as 90 ).
Simpkin is currently listed at 91Kg.

I still think he may be more valuable to us in the future than what a trade would give us.

Kelly brings in a good attitude and character as well which the club rates very high, he will look to try to improve his weaknesses, e.g. there was an article about him after the mini draft had concluded and he had hired a sprinting coach to help him become faster.
Would be a great recruit for the club and will be a gun player in a few years time.

With each game, Fisher's currency is diminishing rapidly..
Next year he'll be 32, & plagued by foot issues he'll unlikely hold much value..
I could part with Gwilt, but for some reason i like Tommy Simpkin his attitude & attack on the ball is exactly what we expect from our defenders..!
I just don't want to see the Saints left behind, when their is A grade talent available..
GWS will deal with the best offer, & Dempster (30 next January) would be a perfect fit for GWS..

Does seem that way! Use Kosi as an example; constantly pinged for wrestling his man out of the way (the old-fashioned 'test of strength'), but never given a free when HE's thrown out of the way - even the commentators usually say something trite like "needs to show more strength there"....

I like him a lot, I really do, but I wouldn't take him at the Saints pick. He plays too much of a flank role IMO. He has played in the midfield but I rate Crouch/Billings higher.

If we wanted to make big "ish" trades I think Gilbert is probably the most valuable player. We can part with him due to Roberton falling into our lap, and it will be interesting to see if we can get any decent performance out of Ferg for backup.

Down the track a bit, ( maybe at the end of 2014 ), we could possibly do a monster trade involving McEvoy. But it would depend on a few things working out.

Rough value I'd put on players.

Fisher = Lake = McIntosh but older and not as capable in a key posi = 2nd round pick - 3rd round pick.
Dempster = similar = 2nd round pick
Gilbert because he's younger, late first to early 2nd maybe , but he doesn't have the reputation of the others.
Dal Santo = I don't think anyone would give up a first rounder, probably 2nd rounder +
Gwilt = maybe a second or third rounder.
I'm not sure that a second round pick is really worth us trading any of these guys.

By contrast we would surely get a 1st round pick for McEvoy.

I guess that what I was getting at with McEvoy, was that IF Hickey looks like becoming an "a" grader in his own right, AND Stanley can become a ruck forward , and Pierce gets good enough to become a backup ruck. We can do a massive trade with McEvoy without sacrificing the future.

I believe that we could get away with trading Gilbert because of Roberton appearing out of nowhere.

Watters to explore all options as tough decisions on playing list loom

ST KILDA coach Scott Watters says the Saints will examine all avenues when it comes to improving their list through recruitment at the end of the season.

Watters said after Sunday's 68-point loss to North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium the Saints needed better midfield depth after being exposed, particularly in the first quarter.

On Wednesday, he said the club would leave no stone unturned in stocking up players likely to be under the age of 26, after an unsuccessful recruiting period between 2006 and 2010 which has left the list with holes in it.

"You have to look at all options – the options that are available to you, obviously recruiting, obviously trading, free agency, you explore everything," Watters said.

"We will explore everything.


"Our club from 2006 to 2010 … we've got the worst retention rate from a recruitment point of view if you look at what we've recruited in that time and what remains at the club."

From that time, which includes five trade periods, national and rookie drafts, the Saints have just 12 players recruited still at the club.

Over the past two years, they've picked up mature-age players such as Ahmed Saad, Terry Milera, Trent Dennis-Lane, Beau Maister, Tom Lee and Tom Hickey to bolster the forward and ruck stocks, as well as a number of emerging youngsters including Nathan Wright, Seb Ross, Jack Newnes and Spencer White.

"We need to improve our list. We don't shy away from that; we think over the last 18 months we've exposed a lot of players that are going to help us and certainly build a good foundation for us," Watters said.

"But we also know that we need to attract new talent to the club. We have to improve and we look forward to that opportunity at the end of the year."

The average age of the Saints' list is 24 years and 34 days but there is a raft of players set to retire in the coming years.

Watters said the current demographic dictated that players over 26 "probably don't fit in with where we're going".

He said there was no quick fix but was confident the club had already made inroads in addressing the problems left by the bad retention rate of the disappointing recruiting period.

"We've made some improvements to our list already; we've increased our ruck stocks and whilst it might not be clearly evident through our forwards yet because Tom Lee and Spencer White haven't played a lot of footy, they're going to be good players for this club.

"The forward stocks, there's a bit more progression there but we need to increase the depth of our midfield and increase some of our defensive stocks.

"You can't do it all in one hit but we're working through it."

Dont know much about him. Seems a good size but. Appears to play KPD for nthrn blues. Who are going ok. May be worth a look as backup.

Personally prefer other cheap options like Luke Delaney (nth) or Ben Griffiths (rich). Both of which are a bit taller.
