List Mgmt. 2014: The List

While onfield performance remains the main story line for the season, the quality, depth, development and management of our list is a most intriguing sub-plot. The season is all of one game old, but already shapes as being one with more questions than answers.

While plenty of players have question marks over them, I believe each and every one of them to be AFL quality, either by what they have displayed, or their obvious potential. That is not to say the list as a collective is able to take us all the way to flag number 17. The biggest question is, how many players short are we? It could be no more than 2 or 3, or could be as high as half a dozen. And of course, where are these players going to come from? How do we find them? How do we "shake them loose"?

I disagree, Bell has some great hands and can definantly take a mark and kick a goal. Bell has the bigger body but also the bigger tank which is great around stoppages and he'll generally get to more around the ground. Robbo is great as a spark and he has some good leadership qualities but until he learns to dish it to a better user or actually hit a target instead of bombing it as high as he can then he's not in my best 22.

Let's hope he redeems himself tomorrow night because he was probably our worst against Port.

He should be told to always handball in a contest.

Question: If Gibbs doesn't want to play for Carlton, what are Carlton's obligations to play him each week. For instance, could we ask him to sign for what we've offered him, or let him spend the season in the twos?

I can't help but think that we don't want to advantage our opposition, nor do we need the bullshit hanging over our head.

We've got the making of a good core group of players in this squad. Just being let down by non role player types being used where ever.

Our team really lacks leaders, Murphy was great tonight and Simpson is a champion of the club but apart from that, who do we have that will put their hand up and take over. Hopefully Daisy could do this but for now he just has to get himself fit. Judd is on his last legs as are Carrots and Scotland. Yarran stood up tonight but has a tendency to go into his shell.

That is my biggest issue with our list.. That and a lack of quality KPP

No doubt about it for me that this needs at the minimum a mini rebuild.

If Gibbs wants out or wants ridiculous money then I say let him walk, he's quality but he's not a superstar. It's highly possible this will be Waite, Judd, Carrazzo, Scotland and possibly McLean's last season so that is over a thousand games experience possibly leaving at the end of the season.

Call me pessimistic, but I think we may have a couple of tough seasons coming up

I can't see Robinson, Bell and McLean in the same team anymore. If I had to take 1, it would be Bell. Although he doesn't have a polished finish, he is the first to the ball every time.
Graham is a possible replacement for McLean. And Cripps for Robinson.

IMO Mclean is not performing at his usual standards. But then neither is Jeffy G.
But then I seem to remember that Simmo has a bad patch at the start of last season before finding his Mojo again.

Underdone is different from injured though.

Underdone is Hendo playing without a pre-season etc but will get better with game time.

Brock is playing hurt. Playing aint going to help that. And only hurts the team.

Last night confirmed we do not have the cattle to execute the game plan Malthouse is insisting on.
We could enter in to a debate if the MM way is the right way,(I have my opinions) but we all know he will be given the mandate to do things his way.
That will mean list changes as attitudes and execution have had the time to adjust. I love the way Brock McLean goes about it, but MM wants something different. The TV does not show enough for me to draw conclusions, but once he got his chance under Ratten, Brock just kept bobbing up all around the ground. He was one foot soldier to covered the ground running both ways. Under MM he is almost never seen mopping up in the last line, so clearly has directions otherwise. MM is very rigid in his ideas. Many of the players, including senior boys seem short of confidence and regularly second guessing themselves and their mates. See ball get ball is a thing of the past.
Brock is clearly frustrated by what is happening, to the point of appearing petulant. Given his attitude and commitment this is hard to fathom

Some people might think this last list is a bit rough but the question is will any of these players improve and if the answer is no we need to move these guys on so there is spots available for the young guys to have a crack and hopefully improve our team.

Yeah fair call on 2E to be honest I found him and Casboult the hardest 2 players to place. Can't agree with on Cachia if he gets selected before Cripps and Graham are given opportunities we will never threaten for a flag. McLean I fear the game is passing him by at a rapid rate. Can he take us to a flag? Unfortunately we cannot have all 27 year old midfielders who try even Geelong are playing more kids in their midfield than us and they have won 3 flags recently.

Fair call. I disagree with your assessment of Cachia. Honestly Cachia, footskills are underrated. His a solid player in the mold of Scotland. Sadly all we saw from him last year were run with roles. I think he could be a solid b-grader midfielder.

Graham in the long run will be a player. I see him as the eventual replacement for McLean. As they're like for like players. Although atm I still see a use for McLean's smarts and that's keeping Graham out.

Whether both could work in a team I'm yet to see it. But I would love to see them work in tandem. Although I'm not sure our midfield could support two Mitchell types....without sacrificing too much outside run.

Only positions in our midfield that are in dispute atm are really Bell's and Robinson's(?).

The problem with recruiting a key forward from the draft is you generally have to wait 3 to 4 years for them to hit their straps.

Given the age profile of our team can we afford to wait 4 years?

Murphy and Daisy both 27 this year. Surely we want to be contending before they hit 30?

I reckon trading for a big monster key forward is still the way to go.

I'd say our bottom end in the midfield lacks class. Bell, Robinson and Mclean aren't quick and lack skill. Bell has potential as a clearance mid who feeds off to others but I'd love to get some decent youth to replace Robinson and Mclean. I'd like to see Menzel and Docherty develop a large enough tank to rotate in to the midfield as well.

I agree mate the days of carlton buying flags are over, this is why we have a bad culture with the club and typical fans who don't like to see or hear the real truth embrace and respect the draft...

All for short term pain for long term gain. . Need to do it properly and right way
