Does anyone here think Blight would have left Massie on Buddy in 2007?

When did you last watch the replay of this match?

I was so shattered by the Buddy goal with a few seconds to go that I never watched the replay until the weekend (it was on Foxfooty last week).

It is now universally agreed that playing a midget on Buddy cost us the match. A sunny day with the roof open at Etihad is totally different to a wet windy night at Footy Park. It was obvious to a 10 year old that Buddy would slaughter Massie in aerial contests. So, how many of Buddy's seven goals came from contested marks? How many contested marks did Buddy take?

There were a number of reasons we lost that match and watching again Massie on Buddy wasn't the sole reason or IMHO the key reason. I believe a bigger factor was playing injured players. Does anyone recall how Roo played?

Neil still thinks it was the right move too

Roo sat most of the day on the bench IIRC

He should not have played, we effectively played one man short. He had announced his retirement during the week and was not in a fit condition to play. He spent half the match on the bench and had 4 touches.

Anyone see the replay? Any guesses on how much Buddy monstered Massie in one-on-one contests?

P.S. Spackler,
Have you ever watched the replay? Did you notice any loose men in defence? :p

True Massie on Buddy was not what cost us the game.

What cost us was Clarko making changes and stubborn Craigy backing in his players and game plan and.just expecting us to "work harder" over countering Clarko's moves. Another current AFL coach has this mantra.

Craigy is a great teacher and prepares his players well to carry out his game plan. But making "on the fly" changes was foreign to him. Is th reason we played like "Crowbots" under him. Is also (IMO) a reason why guys like VB and Mackay have struggled in their roles post Craigy as their development as young players took place in a very rigid system.

Buddy's never been a contested marking player. What he is though is a natural forward. What needed to happen was an experienced defender have a go. One that knows the angles and how to minimise the damage by pushing the opponent to the less damaging areas. Massie has not those skills. He basically just followed him around and had no proactive contribution to the contest.

All I remember from the final v Hawks was the last 2 minutes when Thommo kicked out on the full and then Goody and Birdman failing to fill the hole that Buddy ran into to take the mark.
That game was typical of the Crows under Craig.

I'm interested if anyone else has watched the replay in recent times.

The Massie thing has become folklore but it is interesting that at no stage during the replay did the the special comments guy (anyone remember who that was?) suggested moving Massie. Late in the third quarter Tim Lane said that "considering the pressure he has been under, Massie has done a good job on Buddy".

In the last quarter Buddy kicked an early goal on Scott Stevens (Massie was having a rest) and as we all recall, Buddy kicked the winner from leading into a space and was hit on the chest. What I didn't remember is how Rougie was all over Truck and had he kicked straight, that would have been the story.

I'm sure the 10 year old you referenced earlier was also worried about Massie on Franklin at ground level, on the lead, in the air, slipping out the back, too fast, too agile, too smart.

11 kicks, 7 marks, 7.2

Fortunately our AA key defender Nathan Bock managed to keep Tim Boyle quiet. So that was a massive win for the coaching staff.

Nasser Hussain still thinks his bowlers just bowled poorly Day 1 at the Gabba too.

Still shaking my head in disbelief...

I guess you would have found it difficult to recognise but Scott Stevens spent most of the day on the dynamic Tim Boyle. Nathan Bock played as the loose man in defence and provided great rebound with 21 possessions. Clarkson won the tactical battle by using Vandenberg to cut out Macca and Stiffy had his hands full with Chance Bateman. Dixon also spent time forward.

It is a legitimate question to ask whether it would have been better to play Bock on Buddy and used Massie or Stevens as the extra man but not exactly obvious to a 10 year old. Buddy kicked most of his goals from leading out and being hit on the chest (not even Bock could have stopped Torney bumping Buddy in the head which he converted from 60 metres).

How often has it been stated that "Blighty wouldn't have let it happen" however I find it amusing that Blighty was commentating the match and never mentioned moving Massie. I guess the 8th team losing to the 5th team in an away elimination final was pretty hard to believe.

Would you like me to send you a copy of the replay Spackler? Haters gotta hate.

Scott Stevens played on Ben Dixon but carry on with your delusion.

If it's any consolation, Neil can't get over it either.

Maybe Massie could have played on Robert Harvey?

Two questions.

When did you last watch this match?

Do you want me to send you a copy?

If you insist on talking bullshit then I will watch the replay again tonight and document who was standing who for everyone of their forward entries.

I suppose Buddy didn't kick 8, which I presume would have been the result with any other player on him. Reminds me of the blokes who lauded VB's hard tag of Pendles and Swan for a half each at 18 touches. You see, they got 22 in the half that the pesky VB wasn't all over them like a rash. So 18 was a monumental effort.

No he didn't.

Perhaps you could send Peter Jonas a copy?

From what TMS said he certainly won't be at the Crows, that's for sure.

Anyway, someone isn't a fan of Craigys methods it seems.

Interesting article, I think he is right on both issues.
I could never understand Craig's reliance on bike training for footy players.
I wonder what Bolton is thinking of it?
Charlie Walsh would be about 94 now ?
I thought the best thing Sando ever did was get rid of the bikes and put in the boxing ring.

I could never understand Craig's reliance on bike training for footy players.

I always assumed it was to do with non-impact on the legs, fitness training.

I also thought it developed the wrong muscles in the legs.

Never trained that way when i was a pro athlete, that's for sure*

*does ADOM count as a sport?

His coaching career has been hijacked.

...that's really it, isn't it? Carlton are about to try to prove Craig right, five years after the last time it didn't work, with inferior playing stock.

"it will end in tears"

This time they have a ready-made scapegoat though

Those young blokes at the Blues will just have to work a bit harder, then it will all come together for them.
If only Malthouse knew about the marvels of the bike
