I'm completely the opposite, I dont know why we constrict it to a couple weeks. For mine it should just be open slather from after the grand final until a week before the draft. It seems some people think the trade week is for entertainment. It isn't and shouldn't be. It's for teams to spend time making moves to improve their list, sometimes that can happen instantly, sometimes it might take significant shuffling and other times there may be other possibilities that open up as a result, which is something we miss out on by constricting it to 2 weeks.

Agree 100%, but I'd keep it open until one week after the draft to enable clubs to trade for draftees they might have missed out on. The current model condenses all the negotiations into a short period and requires all the clubs to be in the same place at the same time. Every year we also hear that every other deal is being held up by a blockbuster trade because no one wants to make the first move. There may as well just be a trade day the way it is set up at the moment.

You'll always end up with a late flurry of deals but a longer period gives clubs enough time to legimitaly discuss their needs, without having to worry about checking in with every other club by the end of the week. It also gives clubs more time to assess draft prospects and value their picks and whether they need to shuffle to draft the kids they're after.

I'd be more interested in the median, and seeing what sort of distribution there is around the pick ranges.

It's looking like trade week is likely to bring forward a good bit of misinformation. And I'm not just talking about misguided speculation but lack of technical knowledge. For instance this story :

Geelong’s first pick at this year’s draft is currently at No.36 after they sent their first-round pick to Carlton to secure Henderson last year. AFL rules governing the trading of future draft picks mean they can’t do the same with picks from next year’s draft to land Deledio or Tuohy.

Future draft picks policy is explained here :
- Clubs can trade one year in the future only.
- Clubs must make at least two first-round selections in each four-year period. If they don't, they will face restrictions from trading any further first-round draft picks.
- If a club trades a future first-round selection, it may not trade any other future selection from that same draft. But if a club keeps its future first-round selection, it can trade any of its future selections from other rounds.

The error that appears to have been made is that it is only trading picks from the same draft (ie 2015) as future picks that is prohibited. Although to trade a first or this years' second may not be the best idea, that is still Geelong's choice.

CORNES: A FIRST ROUND PICK IS FAIR

PORT Adelaide midfielder turned media commentator Kane Cornes believes Adelaide will attempt to secure wantaway Carlton midfielder Bryce Gibbs with a first-round draft pick.

After a semi-final exit last season the Crows hold pick 13 and Cornes told AFL Trade Radio: “I can tell you the Crows won’t be putting much more than pick 13 on the table for Gibbs.”

If Gibbs is worth just pick 13, then pick 9 should net us Fyfe or Dangerfield.

What's the difference between that situation and us saying to Hamish "We want to trade you to another club, but you can only deal with clubs that are willing to offer us a top 10 (or whatever) pick?" There's no power imbalance. If a player is under contract, both player and club have to agree on any trade.

Port can't 'break' Hartlett's contract, but Port can request that Hartlett agrees to break his contract and be traded to another team. Hartlett then has the right to accept or refuse that request.

Gibbs can't 'break' his contract, but he can request that Carlton agree to break his contract and trade him to another team. Carlton then have the right to accept or refuse that request.

What's the difference? Where's the imbalance?

Just on this...

I'm fairly sure there are 3 parties in every player contract - Player, Club & AFL. Every party must agree for the contract to be altered/terminated. We often see player and club must agree but the AFL must also agree which occurs when they rubber stamp a trade.

Outside of Trade/FA the AFL also agrees to player contracts when they re-sign as they are parties to said contract.

A top young forward, a middling pick, a late pick and a drop of 4 in a draft that may be pretty even after 2. I'd like to get a deal like that. Due to the North Melbourne compo at 32 the pick is now no.34 and likely to drop further but is good for Freo as they did not have a 2nd to use for Brad Hill.

EDIT : If Mayne goes as a free agent they'll probably get 23 as compo so 34 would then become 35.

The value for GWS is they will get a pick before they have to start matching. So they get a top 3 Vic/WA player, plus all their academy players. With pick 7 their highest likelihood is they would just have to match from the start and just get their academy players. Still possible that they have to match even with pick 3 but if they don't its a massive improvement on their position. They will get plenty more lower picks.
