GWS's situation: they had 42 players, they can only list 40 next year (I think?), they've lost Cam McCarthy (Freo) and they'll probably lose Caleb Marchbank (Carlton), Jared Pickett (Carlton), Jack Steele (St. Kilda), Will Hoskin-Elliot (Collingwood), James Stewart (Collingwood or Essendon) and Pat McKenna (probably delisted, he's not even close to AFL level)

that means 42-7=35, five senior spots

so in practice at the draft, one live pick with #3, then spend the rest on Will Setterfield, Harry Perryman, Harrison Macreadie and Koby Mutch

This trade makes me so furious!

The team that really would of won the Grand Final if Stevie J played that prelim, now gets pick 3 in the draft. What makes it even better is they have just achieved it by trading out a player who did not play a single game this year and would not be in their best 22 even if available. He would not of played ahead of Cameron, Patton or Lobb.

What makes it even better again, Is that they will also be trading out another player who is not best 22, in Caleb Marchbank, for another first rounder.

They will end up having 4 first round draft picks, one of them being pick 3 and two star academy players they will get to bid on from the stupid bidding system.

They will be getting 3 of the best 10 players in the draft, one other top 20, all for what? Imagine what another team would have to give up to achieve that. We finished tenth and are scrapping the barrel for a second round draft pick, where they can go and offload two players who are not even in their best 22. That's like us giving up Butcher and Ah Chee for pick 3 and 13. I know they aren't the same caliber players, but in regards to their standing on each respective list they are.

Oh and guess what?! I forgot what they are going to be getting for Jack Steele! Another player not in their best 22. Probably a pick around the 15-25 mark.

Go and get stuffed AFL, you have completely tarnished this competition for a long long time. I don't think people are really appreciating what is going to happen. They will continue to trade out these fringe players for many years to come, continuing to get multiple first round draft picks even though they will be winning the flag or at the very least finishing top 4.

The high draft picks they are getting this year and future years will continue to be stock piled and on traded for more early draft picks, or if they happen to turn into a gun, they will trade one of their current best 22 for a early first rounder. This is a never ending loop they have created by giving them far too many first round concessions and letting them have a larger list than others for so long.

Don't forget McCarthy was like pick 14? They just got pick 3 for him with some cheap exchange of picks later on.

High draft picks are supposed to help the lower teams rebuild. Instead it will push GWS to an unbeatable force and will ruin the experience for all other 17 teams and their supporters.

Well this is pretty much what I heard it was 90/10 that Hamish would go to Essendon and that was 2 weeks ago. I don't know what's happened since.

Still need to fit the players wages into their salary cap though.

Which I'm not sure how Hawthorn manage to do it. Do they have some sort of super accountant that helps them find new and " creative" ways to salary sacrifice?

Something looks suss with your data. Surely pick 90 odd doesn't ave out to more games.

Can you add in how many players were taken with each pick. Was there only one player picked at 92 who went on to play 160 games?

So Barrett just said that an option for Geelong is to offer Bartell a much reduced salary to not play at all next year. He used the example that if say he is on $400k a year then Geelong could offer him $180 or less under the proviso he not play to free up salary space. Is this an acceptable thing? Does it occur already? Would it open up a can of worms? Could we do that with Lobbe if we don't get a trade for him?

So if Lobbe's contract is worth another $1.2 mill we could offer him $40k a year for the next 30 years

Dodoro sounded interested enough when he was interviewed on radio too. And Richmond said he basically was just going through the motions. The whole thing is weird.

You try and rush people on Life changing decisions it's no uncommon for them to switch from confidence it's the right choice to being certain that it's not. It's annoying these things get into the media I believe a deal could still be done and I actually have faith in dodo to make it happen. See what happens in the last 48 hours of trade.

And if that's plan A they may go Marshall or English with the live pick if McGrath is gone.

did you see the trade? they gave up pick 7 and pick 31 (ish) too...plus a former pick 14 all for a pick 4 spots ahead of their existing one. I think this trade stinks of the afl threatening them to take action if they don't trade easy this period.

GWS are stocked up with talent, and nup its not fair that we have pick 9 and change, when they have so many picks. But you cant seriously say that they did well out of this trade. They pretty much gave him up for nothing. it was like watching the rich throw money at the poor

Sounds like Crows have been courting Gibbs hard behind the scenes and now he is using the come home sympathy card (young family etc) to get to Adelaide. Hope Carlton play hard ball, after all he re-signed with them, plus they were robbed with how good Betts has turn out to be.

I think Carlton were the reason he didnt reach potential. He had bery little forward talent around him.

Gibbs for pick 13 and a fringe player or Gibbs for Hartlett and Matthew Lobbe?
I know which trade I would take.
I know which trade Carlton would prefer.
The Crows must play this one very smart or a move to Alberton instead of West Lakes is not out of the question for Gibbs.

McDermott may be right in that the cows are not offering enough. But Port making a play for Gibbs? It would be bad enough that we'd have to put up with his old man at Alberton.

gibbs has as much chance of coming to port as polec did the crows

Mentioning Harry Dear in the trade is laughable but I would have thought 13 and Jarryd Lyons was a fair trade. He played 20 games and had 433 disposals this year and like Young profited from the end of the subs vest.

I rate Lyons too but Carlton need some pace and/or tall forward class. I think McGovern is on their radar. I would not trade McGovern.

Rucci reckons (grain of salt I know) Hamish gave the impression to the clubs he spoke with in Melbourne he wasn't keen on any move & despite the media talk that no club was keen because of his salary rah rah Essendon were very interested.

Doesn't take a genius to realise Hamish's salary wouldnt have deterred anyone. They wouldnt have had to pay all of it if it was a problem anyway.

It's sounds totally likely though that he went there and was completely honest telling them he was considering his options but is happy in Adelaide and not sure how he could be convinced to move. I dont think thats unrealistic.

Make no mistake that the clubs wouldve taken HH given the chance. He just decided he doesnt want to move.
