If we pick up Barrett and Dawes for free, we've done well and gone a long way to improving the structure of the list, with the chance to further right some wrongs in the draft.

The issue is I don't trust us to do this.

That Butcher bloke goes alright.

Correct. It is our fault. So we either sit on our hands and do nothing, or we try and fix it. I'm happy we are trying to fix it.

There is no guarantee next years first will be a top 10 pick.

People are holding pick 9 with reverence it does not deserve. In the last 23 years there have been 3 AA players and 2 premiership players drafted with pick 9. One of those players has both AA & a flag (Cornes). 4 heralded players in 23 years. Forgive me if i'm not going to act like we've just traded Chris Judd for magic beans.
What's the strike rate with pick 14?

Despite the ultimate outcome, my biggest gripe is that I still think we traded out our 2017 1st rounder for massive unders.

We really should have pushed for one of GC's picks in the 20's, which I don't think would have been unreasonable or unrealistic given we were the third party helping to make the deal happen. Then, we might have been able to hold onto 19 in the trade with Sydney, or at worst have pick 24/26 instead of 30 right now.

Picks 14, 17, 19 and 31 would have been a great outcome and should have been our target when we decided to put our 2017 1st rounder on the table.

I only know the total spud Dawes who is at melbourne, which club is the Dawes at to which you refer because I don't think I'm aware of him?

H
lol, Fages working the twittersphere to satiate the masses baying for blood re: Gibbs failure.

#godhatesfages
Ha massive fail flogs crers..Carltank didn't buckle..eat your words crowey.

I hate being a lackey... I'm annoyed with the noises coming out of the club, I'm annoyed with our keeping the boys club together, I think we hang on to players too long, I'm annoyed with ken and kt, I'm annoyed with the size and makeup of the leadership group and I'm severely annoyed about the Hartlett noise being public.... but the trade period was okay for the future of the club.

You just need to look at the Hibberd to Melboune deal to realise that this draft is rated more highly than next years. (especially in the area we have our 4 picks) Melbourne and Essendon haggled over the year of the second rounder. Both clubs wanted this years second rounder because of the evenness at the top to mid of this draft.

I love where our picks are located in the draft. Now we don't have to reach to fill our needs and get the best players. I can think of at least ten players who will go in our range that I would love at the club. I don't think we have given away our future... but if we keep Paul Stewart on the list I will go feral.

Two weeks of expectation & anticipation has pretty much only provided me with apprehension and constipation.

Talk about the club being a pr!c% tease early on with all the talk of our players on the trade table, i thought my ex was bad. Hartlett, Lobbe, O'Shea..... nada. To then have the opportunity to use a + 60 pick which we could have used for a Black, Vardy or Stewart to assist in our forward line is a wasted opportunity. They would've come relatively cheap and maybe our list manager needs to know how to sell a move to SA a little better.

I really like that we have 4 picks inside 30 'but' i will be closing my eyes at pick 9 where we may have had the opportunity to pick up a Taranto, Scrimshaw or SPS. I'll probs be even more upset if one of them slides to pick 13. Hopefully the neighbours go for some weird ass pick that they get totally wrong.

Been a big week on here for angst, anger, confusion and even some humour. I've been as pissed as anyone at times this week and while I agree there are 'numerous' players that i really would rather not be with this club anymore, they deserve a little more respect than many on here have been giving them. Whether thats Lobbe, O'Shea, Hartlett,..... hell even Hinkley, Cripps and Davies (only just ). They are still part of this club as we speak and for now it is what it is.

Hell it's not even about respect, it's more about some of the personal vitriol being directed at some of them.

Again i'm in the mindset that our list management team needs an overhaul going forward but maybe they'll come out being superstars should we draft right. Ken, may be on his last legs but should he get this team all performing together to their full potential then we should make finals in 2017 and as for the players who now remain with us, you'd better perform as hopefully they now understand to what level the rest of the competition values their worth.

Winners
Carlton, Essendon, Fremantle, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Richmond, Saints, West Coast

Losers
Adelaide, Collingwood, Geelong, GWS, Hawks, Sydney

Broke Even (in the words of Cripps)
Brisbane, Kangaroos, Port, Western Bulldogs

Some could see GC either way. Lose two young guns but now have 4 picks within the top 10, gain Hanley, Witts and Lyons for peanuts. I think they are definitely winners.

Crows chasing their tail for 2 weeks, not ending up with Gibbs, and letting Lyons go for nothing was too good to see.

Pies had quite a bit of movement but Wells and Mayne on those massive deals don't do it for me. WHE is exciting but Dunn just cancels out what they have lost defensively.

We will only know with the Hawks in a couple of years time, but losing Mitchell, Lewis, and basically having no impact in a strong draft will set them back a bit.

GWS gained Lids who will help in their premiership quest, but lost a bucket load of young talent as well.

Swans would be spewing at losing Mitchell, Nank, and not knowing what will happen with X. Richards either.

Geelong - WTF?

Just a reference, shows the Draft pick #, top ten in order of most games played since draft year (excl Essendon last year for obvious reasons).
Games played not a direct correlation to quality of player of course, but not a bad one.

Bolded are Port Adelaide players.
2015 - 3, 1, 5, 15, 18, 2, 25, 8, 24, 4
2014 - 29, 18, 5, 14, 61, 46, 3, 30, 47, 41
2013 - 90 (rookie promotion), 4, 28, 2, 5, 26, 86 (rookie), 89 (rookie), 21 (Impey), 47
2012 - 76 (rookie), 93 (rookie), 102 (rookie), 7 (Wines), 9, 6, 106 (rookie), 8, 5, 1
2011 - 77 (rookie), 15, 6 (Wingard), 70 (rookie), 11, 82 (rookie), 33, 14, 58, 37
2010 - 18, 66, 4, 17, 91 (rookie), 26, 40, 14, 33, 85 (rookie)
2009 - 3, 86 (rookie), 5, 72 (rookie), 21, 14, 46, 28, 1, 29
2008 - 3, 30, 11, 9, 23, 2, 38 (Broadbent), 24, 25, 7
2007 - 17, 13, 37, 10, 12, 2, 40, 19, 3, 59 (scholarship)
2006 - 7, 1, 71 (Westhoff), 13, 5 (Boak), 53, 41, 26, 40, 12

#1 draft pick represented 4 out of 10 years
#2 4/10, #3 4/10, #4 3/10, #5 6/10, #6 2/10, #7 3/10, #8 2/10, #9 2/10, #10 1/10

#1-10 picks total 31/100
#11-20 18/100
#21-30 14/100
#31-40 7/100
#Rookie 14/100

Rough conclusion says that a top 10 pick is about twice as likely to be a successful player as a Top 30 pick, and 4-5 times a likely as a 31-40 pick.

Essentially we have traded our 2017 first rounder (and moved down 5 picks this year) for picks 17, 30, and 31

Knowing that this is a good deep draft, I'm good with that
Talk about cherry picking a take

wait a minute whats this pick 14 stuff?

we have pick 9 right?.....right?

Tuesday's deal was a cluster**** of incompetence, of that there is no doubt.

But I think today's deal is actually ok given what we need on our list. A kid who is picked up in the first 2 rounds of the draft will come to the club expecting to have an impact and get game time in their first season, especially if they're a midfielder. This is what we need. A kid picked up in the third round is more likely to just be content at being on the list. We also know that KH is far more inclined to give games to big names or high draft picks.

So, while player #9 might end up being better than player #14, the impact of having four kids, instead of three, putting genuine pressure on our underperforming senior players will hopefully be of greater benefit overall. We are so far away from one player making a difference to our fortunes that I kinda think this is approach we have to take.

The question now is how the **** do we reverse Tuesday's cluster**** and get back into the 2017 draft!?!?!
But, but ... without Tuesday's deal we couldnt have made todays deal!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear god. It is this thinking that is destroying the club

Let's look at this trade.

We had 9, 19 & 49

We got back 14, 17, 31

49&31 cancel each other out. They are lucky dip picks.

Port Adelaide actually swapped pick 9 for 14, so that we could upgrade 19 to pick 17.

Words fail me

This is your club people

Lol
"If you igore the major upside of this trade, it's like we didn't even get any advantage from it! "
