Marshall won't be around later.

Yep, that's what I'm saying. If we can get a late first somehow, use 5 on Marshall and then a late first and early second to bolster our midfield. If, by some miracle, on of the top-end mids (McCluggage/Brodie) slip to us at 5, then grab them instead of Marshall and draft Battle or Kerr with a later pick.

If we're taking three live picks into the draft I'd be hoping for two quality mids and a tall forward.

A late first doesnt happen without downgrading pick 5.

There are other ways to get a late first round pick, probably requiring the loss of an established player.

Tuohy, Kreuzer, Rowe - to the right club, either alone or packaged with a later pick, these guys could get us a late first or very early second.

Hell, GWS or GC may even be open to trading a late first for our second next year if they have too many picks to use this year.

Rowe?? Sure he outperformed our expectations but no club is giving up a first round pick for Sammy.

As I said, to the right club, and package with a later pick, it wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility to get a late first or (more likely) early second.

To a contending club, a durable, ready-made tall defender with modest salary demands could well be worth more than a raw 18-year-old.

The thing with KPF's is that you'll rarely strike gold and get a gun in later rounds. Hard enough to nail them early, let alone late.

Best of recent years:

2010: Tom Lynch @ #11
2011: Patton @#1
2012: Daniher @ #11 (although would have gone higher if not a F/S)
2013: Tom Boyd @ #1? McCarthy @ #14 (probably Boyd, even though he is copping a little flack right now)
2014: McCartin @ #1? Wright @ #8? Moore @ #9?

Things can change but if you want a quality KPF, you have to get one early.

thoughts on Jack Scrimshaw?

Very keen, however there's a glut of midfielders around the same draft range and we'll have to look at their upside.

Someone like Dylan Clarke will be able to come in next year and have an impact, while Scrimshaw might take a few more years of development and then really take off.

If we play our cards right, we might be able to assemble a few ready-to-go mids via draft and trade.

Scrimshaw's probably a medium-tall flanker.

Unless he's been getting midfield minutes I don't know about

From the draft footage, seems to rotate between the flanks, wing and centre.

I'd imagine he'd spend much of his first few seasons in an outside role and then integrated into the midfield as he fills out.

Or part with two first round picks lol

So will GC have to use their first pick to get Bowes?

Doubt it.. This is where i reckon trading down pick 5 with GCS could work in our favour.. IF GCS had pick 5 they could have 2 picks in the top 5 and then be able to use all the rest of the picks to get enough points to get Bowes as well.

So we trade pick 5 to GCS for Pick 8 & 21 (or a higher pick that they get for Omeara, Swallow or Prestia) We get a 3 place downgrade and are a realistic chance of still getting the player we want + another top 21 pick.

What do you see in Venables, Sin?
I mean, it's easy enough to see the quality and potential upside, but does he find the ball enough.
Was the fact he's been injured for a part of the year put the brakes on him pushing out a full four quarters?

Must say that the others pretty much pick themselves, don't they?
Quality performances week in.....week out....except for Marshall but he is the tall amongst the mids here.

Venables is very young(25th November), and sometimes explosive packages take time to realise how to use it properly. At the moment i could imagine him being likened to a precocious 2yo colt with enormous talent , but immature and having a few growing pains.

Explosive players like R.Gray, Danger, GAJ, Hanners etc were a mile off their peak as 18yo's, and i see a chance that Venables' trajectory could be like that. Not a certainty of course, but a fair chance.

I would be pleased if we called out his name if we retain a pick anywhere in the 1st RD from 5 onwards.

mmmmm...........nup..........

Care to expand?

The footage is actually better than I recall. Gathers the ball cleanly, puts his head down, some lightning handballs in that package too. He has plenty of AFL attributes and has a good mix of inside and outside skill.

If we were to trade Tuohy, this guy would be the perfect compensation.

Im probably showing my draft ignorance but from all the draft videos I've seen of this years crop the only one that really excites me / stands out to me is ainsworth everyone else in the top 10 throw a blanket over. Would be stoked to get him at 5 but I'm probably in the minority.

Just watching those highlights it's pretty clear that Scrimshaw has all the traits to transition into a midfielder, has missed a heap of footy so most likely doesn't have the tank to play on ball ATM.
-Moves very well for a player @193cm always looks really balanced.
If clubs are confident that he will make it at AFL level as a mid, he could go as high as pick 2/3
-Looks really smooth when moving through heavy traffic with ball in hand.
-Hand are really clean, rarely fumbles and is also good at getting his arms up in the tackle and dishing off.
-Contested stuff, one on one work is very impressive.
-kicking skills are right up there with the best of the this years draft.

What's Jack Maibaum's expected draft range? I like the look of him as he looks to read the play well and make good decisions under pressure. Apparently has a 'cool head' and is best as a stopper. Would compliment Weitering perfectly at FB I would think - though I hope he grows as he's only 193 which isn't big for a KPP these days.

Dead ringer for Bontempelli with that lateral movement and kicking action.

Going to be interesting to see where he ends up and how much upside recruiters see in him. The benefit of having 3 picks inside the Top 20 this year is you'll be nabbing 3 players of similar ability, who could all press their case for Round 1.

If we took (for example) Ainsworth, Scrimshaw and Clarke, I'd suspect at least 2, if not all would make the squad. A huge inoculation of talent.
