Ainsworth is more Stringer than Robbie Gray

He wont add anything to our midfield. He'll be a quality flanker that can drop back and lead up at the ball. And he'll be a decent player doing it. But he's not what we need.

He'd constantly tease with midfield minutes but never deliver what we need

IMO he could be a Devon Smith hard running small forward/mid type player.
He'd add ball winning ability on the inside, pace on the inside and outside and he would also add something we are really lacking in the forward line.
Remember this kid is considered the best small forward prospect in recent times.
Coming into the year people were talking about him potentially going at pick 1 as a small forward.
Later in the year he showed he could play midfield, win contested ball with big numbers , win clearances ,tackle, has explosive pace to break away and link up and still have 5+ shots on goal.

With Palmer and Smedts in, I'm not sure we take a DFA. I think we'd have to be pretty keen on them.
I'm worried that GWS might be in for a few as well.

With the need for them to bring in at least 9 players between the ND, the final DFA period and the PSD, I can see them grabbing someone like Barlow, or dislodging an uncontracted player into the PSD.

They've already got 7 names pencilled in the draft, so it's just a question of where they'll dig up the other 2-4.

Id still be looking at Grimes as a DFA and see if any nuggets are loosened from GWS

Unless we're keen on Downie or Barrett, I don't think we have. Finlayson was re-signed for a year.

My concern is that his best attributes are high marking on the lead. As a shorter player I dont see that transferring as well into the AFL.

He's not really a small forward in the crumbing/ground level sense. More of a shorter third tall. Like a more solid Gunston or a Darling/Stringer type.

Its important to remember Stringer with his physicality dominated the midfield when he went in there as a junior as well. In my more naive days i remember really wanting him because he would be a really good midfielder at AFL level. But he's never been able to consistenly move into the midfield.

Obviously a player like Stringer would be a great get. But i dont know if he's perfect for us. Certainly if we had of nabbed pick #8 i'd be locking him in. But i dont know about #5.

I'm not totally across GWS' list changes, but they've traded out 9 players, 1 in, 1 retired and have to cut this year's list number by 2?
So you think they'll cut another 2-4?

They had 42, now they need to max out at 40 (minimum 38) after the AFL changed their establishment rules on them.

The points system was also modified, so that they're required to have an open list spot for every pick they intend to use in the draft (ie. for points). That means they'll need to open up 11 list spots to maximise their yield, and gives them a target of 29 on their list before the draft.

With the trade period done, they've had a net change of 9, which takes them to 33; 4 to go. They have 4 still uncontracted.

Their picks/points are likely to be all but expended after taking McGrath and their 6 academy kids. Which leaves them at 36, so they'll need to find 2 from somewhere, at the minimum.

Or they might choose to burn about 400 points and keep 2 of their 4 uncontracted names (I doubt it).

You'd think this would be roughly how the draft will fall.

1. McCluggage - Essendon
2. McGrath - GWS
3. Ainsworth - Brisbane
4. Brodie - GCS
5. Taranto - Carlton
6. SPS - GCS
7. Bowes - GCS (Freo Bid)

Those are the names up the top, then anything could happen in my eyes.
I have a feeling, Carlton may be the club to bid on Bowes or Freo at worst.

That means they'll need to open up 11 list spots to maximise their yield, and gives them a target of 29 on their list before the draft.

Will be interesting to see if they do this. Leave some points on the table vs cutting 4 more players.
Already a massive list change.

We have picks 5,25,48,63,66,70,81,99,117
5. Ben Anisworth
25.Will Haywood (isnt he the SA KPF? I dunno if we'd wanna take 1) a SA after recent weeks and 2) a key forward outside the top 10, Kerr is a special case because he is essentially a father son, but youre much better going after mids with picks in the 20's than KPFs)
48. Dylan Clarke (wont be at 48 unfortunately)
63. Patrick Kerr (wont be at 63 unfortunately)
66. Tony Olango
70. Isaac Cummings

Your right. He isn't your traditional small crumming snapping sharp shooter type small forward.
He is considered the best contested mark of this draft class, that is very impressive when you consider he is only 179cm.
Jamie Elliot is a leading high marking small forward and he's game has translated well to AFL and Anisworth much more talented prospect.

The four are Dawson Simpson, Tom Downie, Jake Barrett and Tim Mohr, so it's not really a loss to them at all.

It's going to be an ask for Corr and Tomlinson to hold down FB, but it can be done. They may target O'Shea in the DFA period after the draft.

Haywood 186cm HFF/Wing this kid is one of the best kick at goal I've ever seen. Can kick them from 55-60m with easy.
If we don't get Anisworth at pick 5 Haywood at pick 25, would be a great fit for us.
We badly need to find some goal scoring power.
Yeah true, sorry I confused him with a KPF, yeah that would be a good pick up.
