Just doing some quick numbers and I could be wrong, but I think regardless if Brisbane bid on Bowes or not gcs will always have a pick before us, if Brisbane bid on Bowes gcs will use pick 3 to take him there pick 4 will be absorbed and with the carry over points from the 20 percent discount will shuffle there pick 6 to pick 5 moving us back to pick 6.
New draft order will be
1. Ess
2. Gws
3. Gcs
4. Bris
5. Gcs
6. Carl

Does this have any bearing on who is available at our pick?

We're all good - that's not how it works.

If they have to cough up 2000 points, and their next pick is worth 2100 points, the extra 100 points are lost, not added to their following pick.
If their next pick was only worth 1900 points, then their following pick would be moved backwards based on the 100 point deficit.

Fair point about the need for a ruckmen with 4 already on our list. We do however need more small forwards, who are the best Eddie Betts, Jeffy Garlett types likely to be available for the picks in the 60s.

I'd say there's every chance we look at a project ruck either late in the ND or in the RD.

We do currently have Kreuzer, Phillips, Gorringe, Casboult and Korcheck at the club but 3-4 of those could well be off the list heading into 2018.

If we intend to bring a project ruck in rather than one who is more experienced and ready to go, I'd say it may be better to do it this year so they have a year of development at an AFL club under their belt before they may realistically be called upon.

If we were to get rid of more than 2 of our rucks next year then i would probably rather take an experienced free agent like a Matthew Lobbe who is coming off contract next year.

Nope, the picks are used by the academy side's next immediate pick.

Even if Bowes doesn't get a bid, this draft's top echelon is in the first 7 players (including Bowes and Setterfield). We SHOULD be good either way.

I'm really really warming to Taranto if he's there at 5, guy is pure class and a match winner. Those a harder to find than pure grunt midfielders.

I'd rather a player that can take an overhead mark when up forward with a good enough tank to run through the midfield that oozes class that basis his game on Luke Parker, then a player that's an inside bull. Take the class while its there and get a Brodie type next year.

We will still have Murph, E Curnow to help Crippa on the inside next year, even Gibbs, Palmer, Cunningham and maybe C Curnow will also be there to assist.

Take the class!!!!

Yes! Love Olango's work...have been onto him as a project key position player for a while. Not sure where you take him in the draft though or whether the list mgmt crew think we need a ruck with Kreuze, Phillips, Gorringe and Korcheck at the club.

Kreuzer has not proven durable.
Phillips looks OK but not outstanding. Will be OK for 2017.
Gorringe not demonstrated he is an AFL level ruck so far.
Korcheck is big but...

I think getting a young project ruck on the list now makes sense (or rookie list).
Would be a few years before we get AFL level output - unless we fluke a beauty.
GWS may go after Olango as showed he can beat English to the ball and looks faster than English (but English is better with ball in hand).

They're not big contested ball winning types but they're probably better than Taranto and Brodie for 1%ers and silk. The plus is they can also accumulate in the midfield.

I'm actually in the position of being happy with about 6 players at pick 5.

He played lots of games last year but was not at his best

The downside there is that we'll be comparing whoever we get with half a dozen other blokes for the remainder of their careers.

If Weitering regressed and never got above "OK" level play, while Schache went on to win a bunch of Coleman medals, at least we could look back and say that we made the logical choice at the time.

If we take Taranto, Carlton fans will expect him to outperform Brodie, SPS, Scrimshaw and Ainsworth - and if he doesn't there'll be hell to pay.

I wouldn't say that's entirely true;

"I have a bit of a soft spot for Timmy. He came to us after playing high-end basketball and he has something about him. He's exceptional for his size above his head and he's a smart, structured kid with good character. He understands what he wants, he plans, he prepares and he just goes about his business. I thought he almost won a few games for us off his own boot in the finals and what some people wouldn't know is that aside from leading our possession count in almost every game, he usually leads our pressure acts as well. I think he's only just starting to realise how good he could be, too. He's not a big-headed kid and his confidence is still growing. One he realises all the things he can do, watch out."

My fear for Scrimshaw is he'll never make the transition from flanker to midfield, and I don't believe we need another flanker. As far as SPS goes I actually think he could be the best player out of the draft he reminds me allot of Jack Martin, however I believe we would break him. I just don't think he's best fit for Carlton.

I wouldn't be disappointed if we reached for Berry which is hypocritical of me because he may suffer the same fate as Scrimshaw.

Those duos look great in isolation but they also had an amazing supporting cast.

Geelong of old: Bartel, Corey, Selwood, Chapman etc
Hawthorn: Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis, Burgoyne, Sewell, Smith
Collingwood: Swan, Pendles, Beams, Sidebottom, Thomas
Swans: Kennedy, Hannebery, Parker, Jack etc etc

Depth of quality in all areas is important - especially with the GWS era approaching.

Cripps and Gibbs in some games this year almost bettered some of the more fancied duos remember the Sydney game they broke even against Kennedy/Hanebury, problem was Sydneys next tier in Luke Parker decided to make the fight uneven

Bulldogs: Bonte, Libba, Hunter, Dalhaus, Picken, Macrae, Smith, Stringer, Daniel these are just those that played in the granny they still have more to come back next season to run through the middle

It's been addressed a few times in this thread but Brodie possess many of the same characteristics as Taranto, with his strong hands, kicking skills and ability to impact the contest. He isn't just grunt; he has plenty of other high-level attributes.

What Taranto has over Brodie is his ability to hit the scoreboard. He is slightly more well-rounded, but not by much.

Both have similar ceilings and it'll be interesting tracking their careers side-by-side. Personally, I still consider Brodie to be the second best player in the draft and the one most likely to become a star at AFL level.

That's an incredibly exciting read up. I watched his highlights and wasn't blown away but that's a very glowing review and wouldn't be disappointed based on that.

It'll be another Cripps or Boekhurst type pick where everyone will have different opinions. Hopefully it turns into a Cripps type result for us
