Cripps went at 13 would he have been a stretch at 5? No way, I'm sure there were many saying he has no tricks, kicking isn't great blah blah. Supposedly Brodie is an animal with a burning desire.
Cripps displayed that he could unlock the game from clearances a lot more than what Brodie has. Cripps' query was speed and body shape, but it was well understood he'd had a dramatic growth spurt and a broken leg.

I get the thinking but having 2 guys in the same midfield getting 20 handballs a game each isn't ideal and would lead to an unbalanced midfield.
Look at Swans midfield...they have 3 or 4 per game at 20 plus possessions plus ..and steam roll teams such as us....if we had 6 cripss we could be more happy.Judd,Cripps,Gibbs,Murphy,Brodie,Prestia....stuff like this equals sustained attack and possession of the football....wears down and demoralises the opposition...it can be and often is over at the midfield...should load up on first two picks as mids, usually at a premium.

Someone who knows stuff about stuff. Where does Tim English rate and any chance he could slide?

Could slide if SPS is still available @ pick 7, although Freo may rate English as the best player in the draft.
GCS have 4 picks inside the top 10, they don't really need a Ruckman, but may just think he's to good to pass on.
Swans @9/19 GCS @ 6/10 Eagles @ 14 Doggies @18 are the clubs which English would appeal too.

Maybe so. But H's point is we should not reach for a 3rd tall when we already have Jack and Charlie.

Yeah this is why Battle and Kerr aren't really interesting to me. We already have two forwards in Curnow and Silvagni, that are around that 190cm+.
SOS is your leading forward, with clean hands and has a high football IQ.
Then Charlie is the explosive powerful type, with a big tank and can work further up the ground.
The KPF's on offer this year, are just not really the type or quality of forwards that we need.

I wouldn't exactly call him a small forward @ 192

I don't know about him. Is he more a Darling or a Kersten?
Is he really what we need as we have CCurnow & Silvagni in place for that role already, but with more tricks?

Just can't get enthused for any of the KPF's just yet, but maybe Battle is much more than a KPF......if you want to take that risk.

I said Smart

Agreed we have a few already but with same token I really like what I saw of Battle

Might depend where we see CC playing as some think he could be a Mid and will Harry make it?

RE Harry if in this draft, reality is due to injury he's hardly fired a shot so hard to say where he'd go

Battle is a very much in the Darling mould, just seems less athletic.

Harry will make it, has the right blend of aggression and attacks the contest well, extremely mobile for his size

Most of those guys aren't what you'd classify as KPF. (e.g.) Gunston, Membrey, Darling, Lynch and the other guys are moreso complementary forwards and in the case of Tippett, a ruckman, rather than absolute first rank forwards. (e.g. 2) Walker better than Jenkins and Riewoldt better than Bruce.

We're t we responding to battle saying he was a supporting forward? Could battle, Kerr or Cox be a good complimentary forward for us,

I'm not going to continue beyond this post because I don't want to sound like I'm being critical of a 1st or 2nd year Carlton player. After all it's hardly Harry's fault he got injuried early, and then didn't have the time to get back into full match fitness before the end of the year.

But I do stand by my second round comment, and there's not a chance in hell he'd go pick 1. Maybe if he had a full year of development in the VFL and everything went right but that didn't happen. No point pretending otherwise.
I understand what you are saying and I don't want to pump up one of our own more than deserved, but you only have to look at how guys like English are talked up in the rankings to see how desperate teams are for quality talls. There is no way that Harry missing 12 odd weeks through injury would have caused him to slide into the second round.

I hope we don't reach for anyone tbh, I also see Curnow being a mid so although we are desperate for mids if our recruiters feel battle, Kerr, cox would make good forwards then I'd be happy to use our 2nd or third

Pick 5 must be a quality on baller , no compromise and preferably Pick 25 too perhaps without the bells and whistles.
We to strengthen the midfield the draft. Speculative a can come later.

95% of the time, you'll get a player you rated higher than for where you picked him up. That's just the way it works.
We'd be pretty unlucky to pick up the player we rate as the 25th best player in the draft at our pick #25.

I know it doesn't necessarily work this way but let's say we wanted a real talent and a grunt inside mid with our two picks.
If we take Brodie at #5 as the inside mid first, what talent are we going to get at #25?

If we did though take Taranto or SPS at #5, there's more than a good chance we'd get the an inside mid later, via Clarke, Drew, SPP, Drew, Fisher etc.
So which situation gives us the better chance of getting two quality players and the 'types' we want?

I may be wrong but this is the way I'm seeing it for now.

This is a great point. Because all clubs would have different views on players and how they rate them.
Remember reading an article on Clem Smith. Rogers said when it started to move into the picks in the 60's he had two names in his top 20 still available, Dean Gore he rated at 11 and Clem Smith he rated at 20.
Geelong took Gore @59 and Rogers took Smith with pick 60.

There are just so many variables, it makes it extremely difficult to accurately predict who will still be available, once you get past the really early selections.
All it takes is for one club to take a player unexpectedly and everything changes.

The way pick 25 is positioned is interesting.
Form pick 10 onwards there is 14 live selections till our next pick @25.
If you take into account that two KPF's will most likely be taken in that pick 10-24 range (Battle Marshall)
2-3 key defenders ( Logue Rotham Cox) also likely to be taken in the pick 10-24 range.

That leaves 9 live selections before our next pick, below is a list of 11 potential midfielders predicted to go in the pick 10-25 range. If things go this way on draft day.
By the time our 2nd pick comes around we could have a choice between 2 or 3 of the players below.

Dylan Clarke
Ollie Florent
Jordan Gallucci
Jarrod Berry HB/mid
Shai Bolton
Daniel Venables
Jy Simpkin Forward/mid
Sam Powell Pepper
Willem Drew
Cedric Cox
Will Hayward Forward/mid

One thing to consider is that we do seem to like getting Carlton supporters into the club. Someone said Taranto is a Carlton supporter. Gives you a half mark for possible future loyalty.

If we take Brodie, I am not adverse to taking an inside mid with pace and versatility. Inside mid is not totally out of the question if they have the pace to overlap run and find space.

I still like Brodie with pick 5. Great competitor, prolific contested ball winner, clean hands, good contested mark, and nice pace for his size. I don't really see why people are all of a sudden getting so down on him, I think his kicking ability is being exaggerated. Would compliment Cripps nicely.

Mind you, my gut feel is that we will take Taranto and I will be happy with that, but personally I worry about Taranto's kicking more than Brodie's and he is slower.

I still like Brodie, SPS, Taranto and Setterfield for pick 5.

Allow me to indulge for a second...only a second mind you.

1) * take the midget back flanker
2) the plastic franchise take Ainsworth because they know Devon Smith is hightailing it next year.
3) the Coasters take Bowes after the Bears stick it to em.
4) the Bears take SPS...because he sorta barracks for em and Swannie hears he likes a punt.
5) SOS YELLS OUT McCLUGGAGE while in more shock than the night he heard Rogers call out Boekhorst.

I reckon SOS will bid on Setterfield and will target him for 2 years time. Apparently he is loving Melbourne, if he isn't consistently in their best 22 within 2 years, like so many others he will be gone (and let's face it, that is a much tougher team for a young player to get a gig at than any other club)

I'd prefer SPS he's mesmerizingly good but if gone either Brodie or Taranto will be very good footballers so happy with the possible outcomes, it's exciting prospects at 5 and 25 too.
Go Blues

I'm oldish. Oldish enough to remember Maurice Rioli. Yep i was there in '82 to see his Norm in a losing side to us too. Before Cyril, there was Maurice.

SPS is freakishly like Maurice to my eye.

Low to the ground...the sidestep...either way...the creativity...the short to medium kicks to advantage...the love of crunching tackle after tackle.
