Looks like all the noise is McGrath is going pick 1...

That will shake a few things I think... Could mean a bid for Bowes sooner... Taranto could be gone by pick 2... Ainsworth could slide.

And if GWS get stripped of their first rounders, then where does McCluggage fall? In that scenario, with us then at 4 and BRIS bidding on Bowes at 2, I could see this; McGRATH-BOWES-AINSWORTH-MCCLUGGAGE-TARANTO-

I agree with that as a general rule - but given Jarman would probably be taken with one of our very late picks (50's or 60's) I'd be happy enough to take the chance.

If he shows enough that Adelaide actually want him, we'd probably get a late second or early third rounder back in a trade. If he doesn't do enough, we'll delist him before he gets a chance to ask for a trade anyway.

First and second round picks need to be carefully considered to eliminate flight risk where possible - later picks, just take the best player and back yourself in to either keep them or increase their value.

Make perfect sense and we should go for it. Eventually could bundle Gibbs and Jarman and expect a very good return.

One interesting thing is we've been linked to SPS quite a bit and Brodie previously, but there hasnt been much news of us being linked to Taranto suprisingly.

This could be a tactic of SOS or he may just not rate him.

are Lions locked to select McCluggage if GWS select Ainsworth with pick 2 ?

Would want SOS and co to bid on Setterfield first before anything.

I think GWS will take Ainsworth if thats the case. McGrath was supposed to succeed Shaw; Ainsworth would replace Stevie J. They had to use Palmer to do that in the Prelim with dire results and now even he is gone so they need someone like Ainsworth for sure.

Couldn't see Brisbane passing up McL, nor bidding on Bowes, so it will still depend on what Gold Coast do with pick 4. They will make the choice of Taranto or SPS for us I think, and either one is good for us. Unless the rumours of Hayward are true but it seems a heck of a gamble.
GWS have spoken with McCluggage since the combine, so I wouldn't rule anything out just yet.

Word is if McGrath goes no.1, The Giants will take Taranto - with the two QLD clubs taking McCluggage and Ainsworth in whichever order.

ESS - McGrath
GWS - Taranto
BRIS - McCluggage
GC - Ainsworth
CARL - Petrevski-Seton

Terry Wallace had us taking Scrimshaw.......at #5.

Not sure there was any intel behind it.......probably not. :)

Not sure there's any intel(ligence) behind ANYTHING Terry Wallace says...

Interesting only 5 from Vic Metro. Is this typical?

More from Vic Country?

You could throw a blanket over 10 players in this range and you won't win a game with all top end talent playing in the same position
They won't be though, and if they do you can always trade the player you don't need to a club that can use them. I think people expecting to get the perfect player for our needs will be sadly disappointed. Take the best available, they might even turn out better than what we already have.

Maybe he thinks he wont last to our selection..

Clayton mentioned on the RTD podcast that Gold Coast would certainly need to be tactical when picking players considering the position of other teams between their picks.

Looks like they'll do a Harry McKay to us!

13 from the TAC; VC have generally had the upper hand in the count in recent years. The VM squad has been poor for a couple of years, as has the WA pool.

SA pool is poor this year, but it's not really been great for a while either.

Watch Clayton completely balls this up.

Sounds like the Top 5 will get another shakeup in the coming week. How often does that happen?

I wont be surprised if Essendon opt for McGrath over McCluggage, as I see him as the best, most complete player in the draft. What would be the logic behind GWS taking Taranto? Looking for the next Fyfe?

A few days away so thought I'd transcribe whats on my whiteboard to the BF forum. No real clue of the points system but believe both GCS and GWS may be in deficit for next year with the hope of trading back and securing spots in 2018.

#1 - Essendon
Andrew McGrath (179cm, 75kg halfback) Sandringham Dragons

Averaged most disposals in TAC Cup as a midfielder and most disposals at championships of any defender. Due to his skill set, leadership and ability to play all over the ground I believe he would perfectly complement Essendon's recent draftees in Parish and Francis whilst filling the void by running off half back.

#2 - GWS
Hugh McCluggage (185cm, 75kg midfielder) North Ballarat Rebels

Goal kicking midfielder who could have easily gone pick #1 based on his achievements to date and his talent. Averaged 24 disposals and two goals in 17 games.

#3 - Brisbane
Ben Ainsworth (179cm, 74kg forward) Gippsland Power

They are in for a huge win with this guy. Will start forward making their attack formidable in years to come alongside their recent draftees. He may also play stints in the midfield after recent results where he demonstrated his midfield capabilities, averaging 29 disposals and three goals in final four games.

#4 - GCS
Tim Taranto (186cm, 82kg midfielder) Sandringham Dragons

Inside/outside midfielder who possesses pace, tackling ability, aerial prowess and goal sense.
Averaged most SuperCoach points in TAC Cup and third most in the championships. Averaged more contested marks than any other TAC Cup midfielder.

#5 - GCS (Matched Carlton's bid)
Jack Bowes (187cm, 78kg midfielder) Cairns/Gold Coast academy

Extremely skillful inside/outside midfielder who wins his own ball, uses it efficiently, hits the scoreboard and is the perfect addition to bolster their midfield.

#6 - GWS (Matched Carlton's bid)
Will Setterfield (190cm, 80kg midfielder) Sandringham Dragons/GWS academy

Big bodied midfielder with good disposal who can play defensively or offensively. Possesses elite contested and defensive pressure highlighted by his 16 tackles in a TAC Cup final.

#7 - Carlton
Sam Petrevski-Seton (181cm, 75kg midfielder) Claremont

An elite kick on either foot, terrific pace and excellent evasive qualities. SPS would add a plenty of much needed class to Carlton through the midfield and across half-forward. Won more than 50 per cent of possessions contested in WAFL Colts and ranked in the top 10 for tackles.

When was the last time two Scotsman were taken with picks 1 and 2?
