Can Clarke or Nicholls actually hold down a number 1 spot though or are they more number 2 rucks? Because we have 3 of them on our list and we need a competent number 1.

Clarke is a good age at 25 and is 203cm. He's quite athletic for a big man and whilst his hitout numbers aren't spectacular, he also doesn't ruck all game given they have the behemoth in Sandilands. In 2013 when Sandi only played 10 games because of injury that went up to around 20 per game for the year, and in games where he rucked solo without Sandi it was around 26. Which I daresay is more than any of our rucks are capable of atm. He's been relatively injury free as well.

Apparently the Lions are putting off offering Leuenberger a new contract, the Cats should make a play for him. Better than any of our current rucks and he's still only 26. Only problem is he's injury prone.

Personally I think that Stanley has been doing a good job and am happy for the club to persist with him. I'd rather we targeted mids and defenders, which it looks as though we are doing.

I guess Stanley will develop, but we are dead last in hit outs this season, I'd still be looking around for ruckmen.

I think we have our share of "dice roll's"... we would be better with a legit gun kid. Of course getting that is a lot harder than a FA.

I'd consider a Jake Carlisle straight swap. Pending WADA.

Both have had 1 good season, both OOC, similar age, similar upside to both.

If Motlop was on his way out, I'd entertain that deal.

In saying that though, unless there was some kind of three way, it's hard to see Motlop wanting to go to Essendon.

Good- sounds like he'll fit in with the rest of them. Tell him to get over here and go straight to the rehab room and report to the head doctor there.

The fact is we will need around 8 new players at end of year so will be a mixture of free agency and drafting not sure what salary cap space we will have but would imagine a fair bit as cap has also gone up but possible 3 free agents and 5 draftees.

Apart from danger, I think the club should be setting a high priority on luring Carlisle.

I think Carlisle is a lot more 'getable' than people think. He is being forced to play in a position he dislikes (prefers KPD), is out of contract, is rumoured to be fed up with the bombers dramas. Go read the Dons board, they all think he is playing like he is gone.

A few reasons why I would trade our first pick (10-12) for Carlisle:

- Carlisle is far superior to Henderson (and I rate Henderson) as a key defender. And along with Talia, probably the best key defender in the AFL, when played there.

- whilst Henderson is more suited to CHB, Carlisle is more suited to FB, and to be played on the oppositions biggest and best forward. Geelong are in desperate need for this type of key defender with lonergan almost gone and with us having ZERO options coming through on the list. (Kolo to replace rivers as a third tall, Taylor can still play 3 more seasons at CHB).

- is 197cm and can pinch hit in the forward line if required.

- is very young still at 23 and would be part of our next premiership team. Will have 7 solid years partnering kolo in our defence.

- with impending retirements, I think we will have the cap room for him, even after danger (hopefully).

- also, I think dons would accept our first, which is a fair price for both teams. Pick 10-12 is too much for hendo and would be an overpayment outright, and I doubt Carlton would throw something back. In other words, we will have an inequitable pick for hendo, but a good pick for Carlisle whilst other Carlisle suitors (dogs, bris etc) have a pick that is either to high or too low. We are best placed to satisfy the bombers.

Carlisle would set up our defence for the next decade. We have neglected to rebuild our key defensive stocks in our transition but this would make amends. Our back 6 could look like this for the next decade:

FB. Kolo. Carlisle. Bews
HB. Thurlow. Taylor. Guthrie

That would be the best defence in the AFL.

After danger, this must be our next priority. If Carlisle chooses not to come, we must go for hendo.

Carlisle is a gun, no doubt. I just don't think 23 year olds that good are realistically gettable. Essendon will work something out.

I meant the best in a couple years post lonergan, Mackie etc.

Bews the perfect lock down type, Guthrie in his more natural position as an attacking (yet defensive) half back and joined by thurlow (quarterback role) on the other flank. Carlisle to take the monsters, kolo the rivers role with Taylor being Taylor. If there's a more prefect defensive structure, I sure am not aware of it.

The key is that all of these players apart from Taylor are in the same age bracket. Meaning they will play a long time together and will consequently work as a cohesive unit. This is vital for a back 6.

Anyway, Carlisle is probably the second best key defender on the AFL after Talia, is out of contract, plays in a position we have absolutely no cover for after 2016 - we'd be stupid not to pursue this IMO.
