If anyone has any time...

Can we get a list of players selected from Riverina from last say 20 years (and draft position) and divide into academy and pre academy?

I posted the following in the Fear & Stupidity thread a couple of weeks ago...

Ok: first of all: sorry for the long post: but as nobody could answer the question I've been doing some digging myself.

The following is not an exhaustive list. I went through each draft (up to 2010) and found what I could from the Riverina. Early on it was easy - they were drafted straight out of there, but more recently they have been drafted from (mostly) the Murray Bushrangers. It was difficult because not everyone has a Wikipedia page, not everyone who does have a page gives the original junior club prior to joining Murray, and some kids went to other TAC cup sides. Also hard to narrow down some of the NSW/ACT Rams beyond just NSW. There was also some zone stuff and transfers (which is why Carey and Longmire don't appear on the list - they were never drafted) The really good ones I've bolded.

I've done my best - feel free to point out mistakes/amendments. But as for the argument that the region ALWAYS produces TOP TALENT - well, I'll leave that to your own opinion on the matter.

Now, do you think Luke Breust would have been pick 47 in the Rookie Draft if there had have been an academy?

He would have gone, not in the rookie draft, and not even pick 47 in the main draft. The academies not only improves skills, but brings them to the attention of other clubs.

And how many other good kids, as good as Breust was, from the next town over, that never got noticed by anyone and never considered for the draft?

Well, you've gone and done it, you have pissed me right off.

Listen here muppet;

Piss off of our board and do not return.

I couldn't give a flying **** about your opinions on our team, our concessions, our colours, our diet plans...on our board.

They say everyone has the right to an opinion?

Well I tell them to shut the **** up because I have just as much interest in your opinion as I do in the breeding habits of the Powerful Owl.

Time and time again you stick your inbred nose into our board just to slag us off, and I am bloody sick of it.

Mods, BAN THIS PRICK FROM OUR BOARD
A powerful owl?

Haha well said champion!!!

Very nice. I guess you can add Matt suckling, then all the current prezone and academy kids.

Breust and smith were playing vfl and taken as overagers. Obviously means the development wasn't available in nsw

Breust played for Temora, NSW/ACT U/18 and Swans Reserves and I believe Swans had priority on him but decided to pick I'm not sure who instead.

He then played 3 yrs VFL as a rookie on Hawks list before getting upgraded and then the rest is history.

Collingwood still paying a percentage of Heath Shaw’s contract after trading him to GWS

COLLINGWOOD is paying $70,000 a season for the privilege of watching Heath Shaw become the game’s best defender. Under a deal struck with Greater Western Sydney at the end of 2013, the Pies agreed to pay $210,000 of Shaw’s wages over three years to help relieve the expansion club’s salary cap pressure. “It was the mayonnaise that got the deal done,” a figure close to the transaction said on Wednesday night. The Shaw top-up money is counted in the Magpies’ salary cap.

Shaw was shown the door by Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley after 173 games, and traded to GWS in a straight swap for midfielder Taylor Adams. The 2010 premiership defender is three years into a bumper five-season deal with the Giants worth about $3.5 million. He won last year’s best and fairest and made the All-Australian team for the first time. This season he is easily the game’s No. 1 ranked defender, averaging 27 disposals a game. Shaw, 30, is contracted to GWS until the end of 2018, but Collingwood’s ongoing financial contributions, signed off by AFL salary cap auditor Ken Wood, will end this season. He scored a career-high 203 Champion Data ranking points against the Western Bulldogs on Sunday on the back of 38 disposals — at 97 per cent efficiency.

GWS has played hard ball in a series of trades with the Magpies in recent years. The deal that landed Adam Treloar at the Holden Centre saw Collingwood surrender its first round pick in last year’s draft and this year’s draft. An arrangement was also struck between the Pies and former Giants’ football boss Graeme “Gubby” Allan — now working at the Magpies — to send GWS fringe player Tim Golds to Collingwood during last year’s trade period. Golds delisted himself from the GWS primary list with a year to run on his contract with the understanding he would find a home at Collingwood. He became a Magpie with selection No. 55 in November’s rookie draft. The Giants again freed up crucial salary cap space by off-loading Golds.

Well, that explains a bit. $0.2m out of $3.5m is small change, but I recall that GWS wanted something more than Shaw for Taylor Adams given the differences in their careers remaining - guess the $ was it. Still happy to call it win-win for the two clubs; sure Heath will be retired (barring unforseen events) well before Taylor, but we had enough young talent and really needed some older, wise heads, and Heath has certainly delivered on that.

And the Dogs are paying part of Griff's salary too.

I think that was in his first year - basically they paid just about all of Griffen's $900k salary that year.

Aahhh, I thought it was 900k over three or four like the Shaw thing. Oh well... I like it when other teams pay our players to play against them - adds to the motivation I think.

Great line in the movie Moneyball - They're actually pay you to play against them - what must they think of you?

Great list! Leigh Marshall is from Deniliquin just in case you wanted to know, and yes he is related to Todd.

Reckon this tight cap stuff is nonsense. Club is happy to have this story floating around so we can use it at trade week. How many other clubs are getting trade deals like this? Its genius.

Every club that has built a good list has salary cap pressures. That's the point of equalisation. Add to that free agency. It will keep us from dominating for a decade as some are predicting. Our job is to focus on retaining the best and continued excellent recruiting. We'll have a good run no doubt, but we'll eventually come back to the pack.

Saw on Twitter Tom brown has said the club is chasing Walters in the McCarthy trade. personally I'm in favor of it as I don't think they will offer a 2017 pick and I don't want a kid to try and step into the forward line
