One thing to bear in mind that some of our salary cap concessions are consistent with the enlarged list size. If the list size concession is removed ahead of time and the salary cap goes with it, we may find ourselves out of compliance very unexpectedly instead of how the club would have planned it out over the next few years.
True, and it would have to be something that is considered and dealt with equitably. I was going to write a further section in my post about the TPP - assuming it goes up then GWS's concessions might be swallowed up within the increase - but figured it was long enough. That is, we go to the same increased TPP as everyone else, not an additional amount. Presuming we haven't factored in any actual TPP increase (or at least been conservative in our expectations), we should be OK and I would not have an issue. Any changes, though, the AFL would need to properly discuss with GWS management. I just think they should be open to such changes, unless it clearly screws something we had arranged under the existing rules.

Sounds like a kid with strong loyalties and a sensible head on his shoulders. Add that to his footballing nous and, despite some detractors about his ability to make it at AFL level, so would like to see him at GWS next year. Plus, it would be a great story about he and Matt Kennedy in successive years from a tiny town.
Yes it would be a great story to have two players from my club to be at the same club as our last afl player was Jason Wild back in 1994 when Collingullie Glenfield Park FNC was known as Collingullie Ashmont Football Club.
On the other matter was talking to Wagga Tigers timekeeper yesterday and he agrees with me that AFL clubs are trying to take players too early as they don't want them to play footy on country grounds

What does our 2017 academy crop look like 18 months out?

I am thinking we'll only take 3 in the national draft and maybe 1-2 in rookies depending on how many leave. I am thinking we already have plenty of picks and points in the bank already and will focus on accumulating picks for next year. Like snooker - playing one shot ahead of yourself.

Hey there,

I was just wondering what you would want in return for Stewart, Barrett, Steele or McKenna?

I do love Lobb and Marchbank but I doubt they are going anywhere

A better question is probably what do they want.

Stewart, McKenna and Barrett are probably available for a can of coke and a pack of chips - they arent likely to ever play firsts.

Steele is much more interesting. An Academy pick with links to the club, he's also behind a lot of mids to play firsts. My feeling is if a club makes a major personal commitment to him (ie $3m over 4 years), he's gone, but if they are "unwilling to offer too much for an unproven player" then he'll join the long list of GWS re-signings.

I look at Steele and see a young Callan ward it's only his second year of afl 2 years time he will be leading contested footy and smashing clearances he stays only developing

I also haven't given up on Barrett, Leon pointedly mentioned him a couple of weeks ago and he was listed as an emergency. I like the cut of his jib. I get the argument he is unlikely to find opportunites in our side and maybe he has to go for that reason, aka Tom Bugg.
I just hope he can find a place on our list a bit longer and see.

I dont like to be critical but it might be time for Stewart to look elsewhere and see if another club system works for him. He seems to move up the pecking order every off season and then back down after a few games. Tells me he's not short of work ethic and he certainly has the physical attributes, but can he deliver at AFL level?

Remember, GWS made a big, multi-year commitment to Ward, that his old club wasnt willing to match because you should pay young kids too much, or something.

Meh. Same thing with Lobb - if he'd ended up at GC while we got Two Meter Peter, you'd be making the same post :)

Lobb was pick 29 we took Pickett, Ahern and Marchbank ahead of Wright.

If we can keep Lobb with Cameron long term we will be fine anyway but GC edge us in the forwards I think.

We have them everywhere else though.

I reckon Steele and Marchbank are definitely gone. There is absolutely no reason for them not to re-sign other than they have decided to go elsewhere.

I can understand with Steele as he just has so much competition and can get a definite best 22 spot and more money by leaving.

Marchbank is just being an idiot...sorry but you get one life and he is in a position where he can be a star player for a very good team. Benalla is a sh#thole...it's not exactly going back to Point Piper.

Stewart, McCarthy, Barrett all gonski and will leave with best wishes.

There will be one or two that will surprise us on top of this, maybe a WHE but otherwise we're pretty set.

I'm surprised this wasn't left til much later in the season, plenty to get ahead of him in terms of priority and it's not like his form has been outstanding. Very solid yes, don't get me wrong, but just not a priority for mine - it's not like he would be looking elsewhere without a contract.
He would be on a pittance so why not give him and his family peace of mind with a simple 1 year extension

As I said, got no problems with it and cap space never entered my mind. But I would (hope is the wrong word) that next year he spends quite a bit of time in the NEAFL guiding the younger brigade around while younger players get their shot in the seniors. But I'm not sure he deserves that either.

Happy to have him another year, because you know you're going to get quality. I just thought it would be later in the year, that's all.

Understand completely where your coming from. But good news to me is better than now news and more speculation about our exodus

It's Marchbank insurance.
Yes, I'd interpret this as GWS expecting Marchbank to go. I am a little surprised, I expected Patfull to retire, with only a small percentage chance of one more year. However, if he can mentor Macreadie in NEAFL for much of next year, and be an 'in case of emergency' cover ... but for mine we need to give opportunities to Himmelberg and Finlayson, otherwise we risk losing them.

Reckon the club would have made it clear 1s is no guarantee in 2017. I'm sure he is happy with that too. If this is what the extension is based on, that is a great move and in keeping with the teaching culture of the club. As GS says above, a mentoring role for our young defenders as they come through the 2s beckons. We can say goodbye to Marchbank.

Hey lads i have it on good authority hoskin elliot is 100% gone and moving back to Victoria. What is he worth in your eyes?
