Reckon the club would have made it clear 1s is no guarantee in 2017. I'm sure he is happy with that too. If this is what the extension is based on, that is a great move and in keeping with the teaching culture of the club. As GS says above, a mentoring role for our young defenders as they come through the 2s beckons. We can say goodbye to Marchbank.

Given Patfull wasn't in the seniors at the start of the year, I don't think he'll be under any misconceptions if he chooses to return. GWS wants him as someone who's both a great professional and also doesn't get injured much. Patfull can then choose whether to take the deal on its merits.

Hey lads, what kind of contract and how long left does Jack Steele have left at GWS?

If we lose Tom Mitchell, he may be handy for us to fill his hole as an inside mid, we'd give plenty for him and would free up salary and give you points for your academy picks coming through. Also gives you more ability to play Hopper and Kennedy.

Would that work out for GWS?

I would trade out Tomlinson, Steele, WHE and Barrett. Hopefully Marchbank stays but if not shop him around too.
We will have Finlayson, Himmelberg and Macreadie as young, tall backup defenders.
Bring in four or five academy kids and in doing so save significant coin. No doubt we will get a couple more 2017 draft picks too.

Tomlinson and Steele have been given so many chances and regularly disappointed - it's sad to see but it's definitely end of the road for those two.

I don't see Steele in particular as disappointing. In fact as a young player I think he's been very good. I just think they will go with Hopper instead.
Tomlinson... Unfortunately I can't see him cementing a spot. At his age he's too expensive to have running around in the twos.

Geez a bit harsh on Steele. 7 games as a first year player, 9 as a second year, including today. Kid has only played 16 games. Wouldn't call that "so many chances" at all.

He's averaging more disposals, kicks, goals assists, marks, rebound 50's this year than he did last year. He's also improved his disposal efficiency. Last year he kicked 1:2 in his 7 games, this year so far in his 9 he's kicked 8:2 - that's a goal a game until today, not bad for a mid, throw in the extra goal assists and he's been far more productive in his second year.

You're a hard task master if you writing off someone after 16 games. Particularly when every indication is that he is improving his output and impact on the team.

It'd be interesting to compare Steele's output to Ward's in their first few years.

I don't think Steele is the right player to have out there right now, but I have a feeling that he's going to be a slow developer, only to explode in two to three years.

I've posted my views on Barrett before so I wont go into that again.
Re WHE though The guy really is an enigma, I think worth keeping. I do get he hasn't been the player he was in 2014 since with injuries and lack of form. He showed then he could be anything though, and fit and injury free he could well mature into great player yet, IMO. As I recall he is contracted to the end of next year and that would an appropriate time to review his spot on the list.

Tommo has no idea of team ethos. Dont care what position he wants to play, when the team needs you to play somewhere you just do it. Good luck with him Carlton.

How is young Flynn progressing in the Magoos??

I still think we need a quality tap ruckman to get the ball to the mids.

Grundy made a mockery of us yesterday and realise he's one of the best in that area but do we shop for a player that can support Mummy?

It's not Lobb who is more a marking forward and has other attributes but not great at the tap.

With North interested in Steele do we look at a Majak Daw? Still raw and primarily good at the tap but the right age profile and super athletic.

I'm preparing already to be shouted down that he's shit, who does he replace in the team, and we need to be keeping all our players that will win us the next 17 flags in a row, but throwing it out there as I see it as a weakness.

I'm not gunna shout you down, we're on the same side. Everyone else's decision is for them. Mummy does offer more than a tap ruckman IMO. But it may well be the days when need a big tough character at the clearances to support young mids is coming to an end. I think Lobbs future is as a forward/go to guy when you have to kick to a contest. Secondary role as a backup ruck ( occasionally wing as a shock tactic?).
I have seen a little of Flynn and glad we have him, is it a bit soon for a young ruck? As for Majak Daw he looks like a good ruck to me. Being in and out of side a bit not really damning in a side that has Goldstein, who until recently has stayed fit and available.

Agreed - do this deal - in a heartbeat.

We'd only do that deal if we're looking at moving Mumford on. After watching him in his home games this year, I'm starting to wonder if his time will come sooner rather than later. :(

Last years missed trades are starting to add up. McCarthy I can stomach, we stuck to our guns to send a message. Carlton were ready to give pick 11 for Tommo, looks like we'll be lucky to get a 2nd rounder now. Richmond apparently were set to give pick 12 for Steele. We could of had a mortgage on the first round this year.

Collingwood board talking Thommo up after the game, guess because they weren't there.
