Offer whatever you want - you ain't getting him.

If you wanted him you should have drafted him in the first place - going at pick 29 every team had their chance.

The interesting thing is only 3 clubs really liked him from memory Giants, Bombers and Swans.

Swans pick wasn't high enough, Bombers deliberated for ages and then went with Merritt which left us.

He is such a gun player, plays so consistently well and is really courageous.

Just about the best contested mark in the game

I mentioned this on the trade page a week or so back but how do you see James Stewart's progress guys?
Brother who lives in Sydney has seen him in a couple of games and swears he is someone that Essendon should be atleast making enquiries about

Enquire away. Make a decent offer and we'll see what we can do.

I don't say surplus to requirements, but certainly not core or must keep.

Could be McCarthy and a first round pick (or Pickett) for Walters. We will have more first round picks than we need for academy players. Stevie J will retire this year for sure imo. With Stevie J, Stewart, WHE, Tomlinson et al gone it would free up over a mill in cap space to bring in Walters.

Good interview with our new list manager Craig Cameron who still thinks we are a good chance to retain Steele and that we are on the lookout for a small forward, and also talks about our academy in general.

My read;
Steele is staying
Tommo is gone
Cam is gone for a "right price"
Marchbank/Pickett/Ahern unknowable
Perryman, Macredie, Mutch are locks to be academy selections

fwiw, I got a strong feel from a members forum when his name came up in discussion with Peter Taylor that there was some disappointment around Pickett prior to his injury.

The whole draft of Pickett, ahern and marchbank is looking like a wasted year. Interestingly they were the last bunch of interstaters that we have drafted since we started taking academy boys.

Also in terms of a small forward we have spargo coming in who is silk. I'm hoping that Lloyd could be a stopgap until spargo is ready.
Given we are hunting defensive pressure in the fwd half, I wouldn't be shocked to see Hopper play there

Well, be fair, injuries have cruelled all three - not exactly like the O'Rourke/Plowman/Jacksh year - and Pickett had been really improving his defensive game before going down.

As I've said elsewhere, talking to his dad at the intra-club game (where he was bloody good) he took some time last year adjusting to playing small forward (had played wing/mid juniors) and that he was now working hard on those defensive aspects to his game and his confidence in himself and his new role was growing all the time.

I still have hopes for him.

Setterfield not a lock?

Edit: I thought this was the oppositions thread to post in, sorry

On-topic is fine. Trade proposals (which is 90% of opposition contributions) can go elsewhere. :)

AFL Draft Central Phantom Draft ... FWIW they had:
7 - matched Richmond bid for Perryman
11 - matched Norths' bid for Macreadie
12 - matched Norths' bid for Setterfield
15 - matched Western Bulldogs' bid for Zach Sproule
34 - did NOT match Sydney bid for Kobe Mutch
47 - Ryan Garthwaite
50 - Max Lynch

My thoughts:
  • Perryman, Macreadie, Setterfield all possible as they called it, around those numbers seem reasonable
  • Sproule early for mine, but possible due lack of quality talls as for HH in 2015; though wouldn't have thought WB would go a tall
  • entirely possible GWS wouldn't match for Mutch
  • would be surprised if GWS took 6 kids though, unless we lost 6-8 off the list
  • Garthwaite? not sure about him; don't have an issue with getting another defender, but would have thought if we could take 6 that we'd Mutch as 'best available'
  • Lynch - wouldn't have thought we'd take him in the ND with Matt Flynn a good ruck prospect last year, and another good ruck prospect next year in Nathan Richards

I would think so, the comments were purely around what I drew from the interview
Fair enough cheers! I'd love him at Essendon. I seriously think he has huge star potential. Id imagine he would be bid on in the top 10 depending on some teams needs. But I don't think we would bid on him or any academy player at 1/2. Even if we should, it would probably make any future trading with you guys or GC hard work

Meh, I actually prefer Mutch over Setterfield. He's the one I wouldn't match on. But riddle me this, the Allies just got over Vic Country in the last minute and a half - the only game they won. Brisbane and GC have a couple of rated players (Bowes?) yet we have 4 kids in the top 15? (And given Mutch was BOG that game and they only rank him at 34) How did we not sweep every game we played by a hundred points?

Somebody is having a lend if they rate every kid we have that high. Is Perryman as good as Hopper who went at 7 last year? He's good - he's not that good. And Sproule at 15? Rubbish. I want him, he's good but 15? They're trolling.

I agree with you inasmuch as if they were that high a quality, the Allies would have done better. The view that they're all individually brilliant but just didn't gel due to the short preparation time is a bit too convenient - in junior games individual brilliance actually tends to do more in my view. (And some of our lesser lights such as Carroll, Cumming, Maguire, Lynch, Spargo all played quite well at times.) Notwithstanding our views, there's a general belief that this year's draft is pretty even after the first 3 or so, and therefore, I think the risk that a club will reach - or just to screw the academy clubs over because they're jacked with the system - is probably pretty real. There's no 'complete' footballer there for us: Perryman = best natural footballer but lacks athleticism, Mutch = jack of all trades master of none, Sproule = great athleticism but not a great scorer, Macreadie = compared to lesser version of Weitering but had crap Div 2 & Div 1 carnivals, Setterfield = modern footballer prototype (tall, classy) but did SFA in either Div 2 or Div 1 champs. But a lot of the other kids have similar 'but ...' aspects. So yes I can see the bids coming in around where these guys have. (Although hopefully the real recruiters have a thoroughly realistic view rather than the outraged Victorian perspective that a lot of the journos hold.) I would not be averse to GWS actually passing on someone early - just can't work out who's going to be the least talented in future! ;)

So what did people think of Craig Cameron's comments about seeking a defensive small forward? If you extend that thought to small/medium forward, we've had Stevie J, Greene, Dev & Palmer in that role this year, with Pickett under development, and mids such as Hopper, Kennedy & Ahern able to fulfil the role to some extend - and hopefully Charlie Spargo to pick up next year. Yes, some of their defensive work has been so-so. But still, I wouldn't have put that requirement up so high - I guess the issue would be quality versus just having options there. But it did strike me as a bit of a lack of faith in Dev, Toby & Pickett. Or could it have been a red herring, and looking completely elsewhere?

Otherwise, I'd agree that his comments indicated Tommo and Marchbank are pretty much gone; McCarthy to best bid; just not sure on Steele. It seems a similar line as used for Treloar, so still think he could go if he gets a better guarantee of first grade time elsewhere.

EDIT: Craig Cameron's name corrected
