Who is to say that wasn't tactical - forcing us to use an early pick rather than let him slip through to pick 85 like everyone did with Finlayson. How serious were they? They would have known we were going to match. Cost them nothing to put their hand up knowing they weren't getting him as a player.
Doesn't change my original point anyway that there are plenty of very good players, multiple AA, brownlows, premierships B&Fs etc etc. that played less in their first two years than Jack did. He was hardly "starved of opportunity"

I respect your view from a passionate giants supporter. It is tough for these high draft picks who are not playing regular football when they see fellow draftees racking them up at other clubs. I do feel for them because all they want is to play, not be player number 26.
He's just speculating different scenarios, Brett is ok,much better than haters like Ralph, Barrett and Clark.
One thing we have to get used too is losing players. We have an incredible list and resources to maintain a successful team for a prolonged period.
We will lose players, sometimes ones we have paid a lot for, sometimes like Treloar ones we want to keep but so long as we keep a strong spine and the core key players in the list then we will be absolutey fine.
I would have loved Marchbank to stay because I think he has immense upside but then I think of young Himmelberg coming through and I think he could be just as good.
Steele goes and Hopper, Kennedy and Setterfield are right there.
Pickett and WHE are high draft picks but ultimately you can't fit 35 into 22, we will always have blokes not getting a game that probably can get a game elsewhere.
We will keep losing players and will keep making some mistakes with drafting but all is in hand. They are all petrified of us.

We knew that we had to get our cap and list size down especially if we wanted academy kids this year with the new rules.
Disappointing to lose some of them like Steele, but was always going to happen. Just sooner than expected.

At least when we lose players, we get reimbursed with appropriate picks or players. The AFL has provided us with a platform to create a sustainable club for more than just 5 years. We will survive for the next decade, the competition does not want us to fold.
Agree with that but if we get pick 5 (big if) it would be madness 2 do what he is speculating give 5+7+ McCarthy for pick 3.
Totally agree, he didnt really think that through.

Shame jack Steele is leaving I see him as the next Callan ward for the club
Yes, he'll be a good player, maybe as good as Cal, but the Giants need to spread out the age profile. Jack was just not that much younger than Cal and would always be playing second fiddle to him.

Given that the Club suggested Macreadie move to Sydney to continue his development, the only way we're not taking him is if someone makes an offer too big too meet in the draft.
On paper a win for freo but to get up to pick 3 and have McCarthy and his wage off the books is still a positive for us
