How can these guys earn this much when they are shit at their jobs?

I wonder how much of a pay rise the administrators got when the new TV deal came in?

I still can't understand why the debate is "the players don't deserve to get a big pay rise, imagine if you asked your boss for a 20% pay rise for not doing anything extra!" as opposed to "there is a shitload of extra cash, how does it get divided up?"

Kurt Alert.
Last spotted walking past me in Obrien St Bondi Beach. :)

The difference with that is, your boss could replace you. The players hold a lot more power, as without them there is no game. Just a corporation and a bunch of grassy fields, therefore no money coming in. And no one would be interested in watching 18 teams with the talent depth of a VFL or SANFL side. So the players would feel as though they have a pretty good argument for receiving a pay rise.

Essendon fans kept turning up

And if junior funding does not grow as revenue streams grow, the future of the game could just be what you described

I am certainly not going in to bat for the players by any means, but I understand their line of thinking. It certainly is thinking for the immediate term. For what it's worth, I totally agree with you, but the players association would distance themselves from those types of responses as management issues that are not relevant to the discussion.

This is Jiangwan Stadium, where AFL minnows powerhouses Port Adelaide and Gold Coast will play out the much-hyped first AFL game outside of the southern hemisphere. Dinky-dye 1930s Art Deco architecture. Capacity 25,000 (what's the bet that they'll still need tarps?)

I've been to three different arenas built by the Romans and they were all more pleasant than that.

Whether they are doing a good job is another argument and probably depends on what you consider a "god job" as the average fan probably has a different set of criteria to what the AFL commission would have.

But I have no problem with the pay of the execs being much higher than that of an average footballer, they should be.

Compare how many years of experience and education it has taken those execs to get to where they are vs the average footballer.

The price the AFL pays when an average footballer is out of his depth is not huge, the price the AFL pays when an exec is out of his depth is massive. You need to pay high to get the best people to do the job. The AFL is in competition with the millions of large companies around the world to keep their executive staff, if they are good enough they could go elsewhere and earn the same wages and then some.

The average footballer is pretty much in the best position he could possibly be as far as pay goes with the skill set they have.

Chinese factories working overtime due to AFL contract.
In other news today AFL announced a crowd fund project for the upcoming game in Jiangwan stadium, exact details still not revealed.

Rumours about male power supporters being encourage to attend the game due to in imbalance in the local support is surfacing.

Just think about how much Gil makes per decision...

The players dont have a strong case at all and Thomas shows he is as dumb as he looks. Gil is on less money than high powered execs from around the world. If the public demand the execs are paid less then it will be run by Monkeys and be run likely by even more amateurish fan boys than it is now. The problem is if you want the best, you have to offer the best $$$$. The players should take the 10% and run imo. Thats above CPI increases and still acceptable in the real world. Whats to say that if the AFL caves into the 20% demand that in 5 years when the next rights deal is up the players dont demand 30%. Whats been allowed to come into the sport is the Americanisation of thinking around a players worth. Its all good when their is several $Billion in revenue generated by not just the clubs but by the league itself in TV rights. Local sport is struggling and needs cash injections. Players should be taught to invest their earnings rather then the sports cars and the huge house on the beach. Oh right, they are AFL players, they deserve to waste their money.

Surely the AFL and the Commission have shown they are no where near the best. Couldn't make a decision to save their life, hand ball decision making at every opportunity.

If these under-performers can negotiate huge TV rights deals what does that say.

IMO the game sells itself.

"Fair point, but I've already committed those funds on hair brained schemes. But don't worry, we're projecting that workets in 2050 will be earning at least twice much in real terms as you guys are now. Sweet hey?"
