I like how thanks to the podcast posters just address their random questions specifically to Macca. Nobody cares about anybody else's opinion anymore :'(

He has spreadsheets. Its quite intimidating

Brett Anderson hearing Hayward and Simpkin are big chances to go top 10. Gold Coast really like Hayward also reading new inside footy has English a chance to slide to our pick 14

Just ask Roger James
Yeah lets ask that guy who never went through an AFL combine before being added to a list, and who retired over a decade ago. Footy hasn't changed at all.

Gold Coast could afford to take a chance on Hayward that early.

I would still take Marshall and SPP if there.

If Marshall went earlier than our pick then English would be tempting. Assuming some tall has to slide.

Yes and no.
Fitness and body shape has changed but footy nous hasn't.
The combine helps in identifying talented players who are aslo athletically gifted. The ability to identify and draft the better players with early picks has certainly improved over the years.

Rohan Armstrong is probably as good as his brother and may not bad option late or rookie he has been talked up a bit in the Territory. His tackle count and number of disposal per game looks ok. We may turn over a couple of smaller players next year maybe another coming though would be useful.

Rohan Armstrong
Armstrong has catapulted himself into strong draft contention on the back of some eye-catching performances for the Northern Territory during this year’s Division Two championships. He was adjudged the Territory’s best player over the carnival and was subsequently rewarded with selection in the Allies squad for the Division One carnival. Given that he had interest from AFL scouts before the Division Two carnival, his performances across the three games for the Northern Territory will certainly do his chances no harm. It will be interesting to see how he performs against better opposition but so far he has ticked all the boxes and could be a gem. He averaged 24 disposals and five tackles in his two appearances in the TAC Cup for the Northern Territory, being named in the best players on both occasions.

Yep. Didnt go through combine and if he had he wouldn't have excelled when compared to players of the era. How does Sam Mitchell excel even at the later stage of career? Reads the play well and puts himself in right positions. Draft combines aren't a waste of time but there will be times when a player does not fit the mould but excels anyway.
Personally, I think RJ still would have found his niche a decade later.

The Draft combines do an excellent job at identifying athletic traits.
I would take more notice of the hands test and kicking tests but even then there is criticisms that they aren't performed under real or perceived tackling pressure.
Skills that aren't really tested for include balance, fumbling under pressure and the critical reading the play (just being in the right place at the right time).
All 3 of these traits can enable a slower player to look quicker and be more effective than the athletically gifted player.

Yeah the clean hands test is good in the regard that the ball is delivered along the ground or at speed and have to get one take then dish it off at various lengths: tests ball handling fumbling and generall handballing. The kicking tests however isnt accurate at all; pretty much do a full circle kick on your left another full circle kick on your right even then you still have way too many seconds to kick thats unrealistic at afl level and still score a perfect 5

Yeah Sam Mitchell would be my example.

Sam Mitchell is everyone's example, maybe find a new one. Good luck.

Robbie Gray?
Thats more an example of the working class draftee disappearing. He was meat packing all day and then went to training, none of that now, and even if he hadn't been injured for the combine he didn't have the prep for it that most in the pool get these days. And he was a long way from being a chunk.

Barlow, priddis, scott thompson, kane cornes, cameron ling, nick maxwell, tom rockliff, curnow, puopolo, caleb daniel, jobe watson.

Not an exhaustive list, but a good reflection of players who've overcome physical limitations of one sort or another to become good players due to their 'football nous', at least in part.

Not the best players, but there are two brownlow medalists and two premiership captains in that list.

Whether this list is useful to either side of the argument i'll let you kind folks decide.

Any more guys drafted 15 years ago you'd like to name?
Still was an elite in modern day football as is Sam mitchell.

Michael Barlow
Luke shuey
Dan hannabery
Matt Priddis
Rory Sloane
Jack Steven
Tom libratore

I would say footy nous plays more part than athletic ability in these situations.

As PAF stated its yes and no. You have to have some standard in athletic ability. But footy nous can overcome limitations.

Edit lol Sleezy beat me to it.
