Can't help but think we panicked with that pick, feel like we wanted Gresham but he got taken a couple of picks before then we just went for the next best small mid
Panicked?

We interviewed Lovell like 6 months before draft night. It wasn't a panic choice, and I think if it wasn't for Burton being available he would have been our first choice.

they have a list of players they are interested in, it will be in order of priority

they won't have everyone, like GW said they haven't interviewed any of the four players he thinks could be pick one

player gets picked, cross him off the list, if you are drafting best available when your turn comes you call the top name left on your list

I was checking out the latest mock draft on afl.com of the top 30 with no Joel Garner in sight. Where does everyone reckon he's gonna go?

I had a really good feeling we were going to land Smitty & cheered like a Boss when we did.

I've got that same feeling about Kruger - just wish I knew how to spell his name without checking!

I went absolutely nuts when we drafted Cyril. Honking the car horn and punching the air in delight.
I was also pumped about Buddy.

On the other hand, i wanted Mitch Clark and I was happy about Mitch Thorp.

I'm glad the club does the drafting and not me!

I guess we don't even know if GW rates him at all. Here's hoping he does.

But this is one of the things I love about the draft and draft night. I'll be sitting next to my Marshall amp-like radio and excitedly cheering each club that doesn't pick him right up until either we do and I'll erupt or someone else does and I'll cuss the shit out of them.

I did the same thing with Burton, Garlett, Ratugolea, Luke Ryan, Barrett etc over the last few years and it's fun to have someone to barrack for whether we eventually get them or not.

The fact that the big dogs in Brett Anderson, Cal Twomey, Bishop, Knightmare, Matt Balmer etc don't have him anywhere near their top 30 doesn't garauntee he won't go somewhat early but it gives me hope that he will at least last until our 1st pick.

I tell you what, he'll be my boy if we get him!
Last time I was this sold on a player having a bright future from viewing his highlights, was Patrick Cripps who quite a few had going much later in their mocks and phantoms.

Would you be happy to give up moderating too become a hawks scout?

Happy to make up rubbish rumours about Wright :D.
Lets see if he freefalls his way to the rookie draft first! :)

Is the club likely to use only three live picks? If that’s the case there’s two more senior list spots to fill then (not including the Vickery retirement of course). Perhaps there’s a player the club might get after the draft in the second delisted free agency period? Although I don’t understand why you would only use three picks when we are already short one player with Vickery gone and the lack of key position players you might as well fill out the list.

I asked Knightmare on his ESPN feed about our picks.

This is his response.

Why does every long left foot kick get linked with Hawthorn? We don't actually draft that many of them, we just had a few at the club for a long time.

Happens every bloody year! haha

Any tingles from seeing Ollie's highlights?

Aaron Halls were phenomenal when he was drafted. Someone put together a 10 minute masterpiece. I'd recommend it for anyone interested.

Knightmare's official phantom draft has us taking Toby Wooller with 44, Kane Farrell with 66 and Trent Mynott with 70.

Branden Starcevich at 46 (St. Kilda)
Noah Balta at 49 (Melbourne)
Dylan Moore at 53 (Sydney)
Nathan Krueger at 71 (North)
Oscar Clavarino at 51 (Port)
Kyron Hayden at 67 (West Coast)
Brayden Ainsworth at 62 (North)

Can't see how a club would panic.

They would have 100 players on their lists, ranked all different ways and just start crossing them off as each club takes their turn.

The only issue would be when a player you rated highly, in a position you do not necessary need to fill, becomes available and you have to trade off most talented versus fulfilling a need...

Not sure if it is the approach every year - but GW's video on the HFC website the other day said that the plan is to draft on best available not filling team needs. He said they know which players they want and it will be a matter of who would be available at the time when we go to pick.

I dare say this is the approach most years. I doubt there would be any panic in our selections.
