So the AFL (Pat Keane) has confirmed that CJ has been pre-selected as a Cat B rookie.

Hawks have 3 picks in the rookie draft, 7, 24 and 35 (Willsmore)

2 live picks

Hopefully some other club gives Willsmore a chance before our 3rd pick however this is extremely unlikely.

Wondering if we might see brereton at box hill this year and recruit him if he develops.

Let's say for example we did this and in 2 years time he has come on to the point he nominates for the draft as there are numerous clubs very interested.

By him not nominating for this year's draft does that mean we could still nominate him as a F/S as a 20 year old?

Might see him at Sandy again at TAC level.

If i've got this right...

Clubs are permitted to have 38, 39 or 40 on their primary list.

We have 38 on our primary list for 2018.

Max permitted list size: 47
Max list size, excluding Cat B rookies: 44
(These caps apply no matter how many you have on your primary list.)

Max # of Category B rookies: 3
Each club can only have 1 Cat B Irish rookie

There is no minimum number of rookies.

With 38 on our main list, we can have up to:
6 Category A rookies &
3 Category B rookies

For 2018, we already have:
Hanrahan (Cat A)
Cousins (Cat A)
Glass (Cat A)
Nash (Cat B - Irish)

That means that if no other club nominates CJ, we can pick:
Willsmore (Cat A)
2 other Cat A picks
&
Then take CJ (Cat B)

If we take Willsmore & 2 live picks, and another club picks CJ after our 3rd pick, we would lose CJ.

But, we have an incentive to take that risk - with Cat A rookies able to play in the seniors, as of 2018, and not counted toward the salary cap (except their match payments) clubs now have a clear incentive to have as many Cat A rookies as the rules permit.

I'll now take a Panadol, and go back to studying something much easier to understand, like Byzantine Empire politics...

On the Afl site they are saying Brisbane with pick 1 in the Rookie draft, has already comitted to, and will re select the younger Beams brother again. So we now basically have the 6th "Live Pick" available.....

Y'know I was right on board with the bidding process, then the AFL releases this - which seems to indicate CJ is now already on the Cat B list with no bidding.

That was my understanding as well.

So 3 picks in the rookie draft but pick 3 will be Willsmore.

I think you're right. There are now a few news articles on afl.com saying the same thing.

It seems that other clubs would have been able to bid on pre-nominated academy or F/S players at the pre-season draft, that wasscheduled for today (prior to the rookie draft) but that no clubs wanted to participate in the pre-season draft, and hence it was cancelled.

At that point, those nominated players went straight onto AFL lists.

But then Carltank changed its mind, and so the pre-season draft is back on - probably for a single player to be selected... But, the nominated academy and F/S players that had already gone onto lists are no longer available for other clubs to bid on at the pre-season draft...

Thanks AFL for making things so transparent:)
Gil, give yourself a another pat on the back. Better still, give yourself a pay rise, champ.
