Yeah I agree but you certainly wouldn't be offering him much and I wouldn't have thought he'd be getting much of a look unless Haynes or Williams go down.
Sounds like youre hoping.

Theres no doubt he could leave but am betting he stays.

Do you guys think you'll retain himmelberg at the end of the year with all your depth? His brother Elliot sort of dropped the ball a bit in his first interview at AFC and said maybe they will play together in the future. You could see on his face he knew he stuffed that up.
I think the answer is we dont know. He looked very good in the few games he played. Seems like the best indicator is will find a spot. That will depend on his off season and how he presents next year.

Eliot was Giants Academy until the family moved to Queensland; so it's not as if he wouldn't consider the orange himself.

Yeh he said that too. I don't think it would be a wise move now he's training as a forward. Not much need for tall forwards at GWS. I know the family started supporting AFC as a second team because we bid on Harry. It's most likely won't happen but it would be a convo the brother would have at some point, as a joke or not.

Rapt with that rumour - but I'll only celebrate when the ink is dry on the contract!
Only a small thing, but he and Hopper were heavily featured in videos tonight. Both talking to camera about the future of the Giants, the culture and commitment to succeed etc. You'd want to pick a couple of young guys commited to the club beyond this year right??

Maybe, we have shitloads of videos, including the current membership promo that feature Jack Steele

Here's hoping it's a sign of confidence in re-signing them both!

Obviously the club (and the fanbase) wants players to buy into the 'team first' philosophy & accept unders to retain more talent. However, my view would be that if $ is an issue within the salary cap, GWS would want to sign 2 of the 3 mids out of contract this year (i.e. Shiel, Kelly & Hopper). With guys coming through the draft, we can live with that, although obviously we'd prefer to hold all 3. If the rumour about Kelly's likely 2 year extension is right, and noting that's what Shiel signed last time, we might find a series of 2 year extensions in the belief/hope that they'll win a premiership and then see from there. Certainly a risk for the club down track, but if doing that holds more of the kids in the meantime then it's probably an acceptable risk.

However, I'd also hope that the list manager and accountants are doing their sums for future years, so assuming that guys like Griffen and Mummy probably finish in 2018, then future $ might be good enough to retain slightly more players than by just looking at the money on offer this year. Really hard to judge without having any idea of the numbers, and obviously have to allow for future kids coming out of their first two year contract to get pay rises.

Losing players is inevitable, list management is finely balanced skill with harsh criticism likely for 17 out of 18 clubs every year that don't win the flag.

So Alex Saundry (#4 back pocket Giants player) is a player agent who manages (among others) the players she's pictured with.

Just remind me, which ones are out of contract at the end of the year?

"You've got your managers who are ex-AFL players but at the moment I'm in the inner sanctum of probably the best club in the league, how they function and what the boys go through on a day-to-day basis and how they operate," she said.

Cal seems set to play on with us, Hopper might go for opportunity if he can't stay in our best 22, and Simpson...well. That back four though? If she plays a part in keeping them signed up, then I guess one of our AFLW starting spots just picks itself each week

Interesting. I wonder if she was a strategic selection for GWS to build a solid relationship with a player manager (so we'd better keep her in the team!). The players she manages - although I wonder if she is still doing so since there might be a hint of 'being too close' there - are a group who for the most part are core to the Giants' future. She could help retain Hopper if the deals for Kelly, Shiel, Green & Patton are just a little off their top dollar and leave some $ over. Pushing the benefits of the non-remunerative kind (the lifestyle etc aspects that she talks about being important) is obviously a big aspect of that.
