McLean was a good pick up in theory, prolific ball winner early career and inside protection for juddy. Problem in practise was he was perennially injured and the game evolved post him literally as we traded for him.
If I recall correctly, we also did the trade at the beginning of the trade period after shouting it from the rooftops. I am angry again just thinking about it. My therapist says to push the pain deep down and hope for the best.

It was actually about 4 weeks out of from the trade period, and then there was issues/disputes about shuffling later round picks, which demonstrates the dangers of doing these trades well before the trade period officially opens.

Band 2 is end of first round.
My point is that the option is:
2017 Gibbs for Crows 1st and 2nd -17 and 40 (in a so called weak draft)
v
2019 Gibbs for band 2 FA - pick 19

So effectively 2 years of Gibbs for pick 40 or so

I would take option 2 every day. Crows aren't going to offer anything better or put up a player of any value, and I don't blame them. Though in hindsight Kelly would have been a good pick up as the steak knives. Deal won't get done.

I understand the thinking, LL, but disagree with the conclusion. Sure those teams may reach to top up and improve.

But I doubt players like Buckley, Graham, Boekhorst (in particular the first 2) will be seen as good enough to make a difference. IF they are traded, it will be for token picks (talking 4th-5th rounders) to circumvent the ignominy of DFA process IMHO.

With you there Ferris, they won't be worth big numbers but, and this is the best bit, give SOS three 4th rounders and watch him scrap, scrag & fiddle to somehow get them up to two seconds.

or pick up some talent that no one saw. Williamson for example

If SOS has pick 3 then another 4-5 picks after 30 I am sure he can nail at least 3-4 of them.

Get 2 good picks for Gibbs and he will do even better

3 and 1st 18 gws
Kelly Kennedy 17 2nd carlton

Gibbs crows
10 (leaver pick from Melbourne assuming it happens) and there 18 carlton

18 to dogs
Stringer Libba Collins carlton

I reckon there will be fallout from the Port loss.

I wouldn't be surprised if Impey, Trengove, Young and Ah Chee are thrown onto the trade table.

this isn't a rumor, just a hunch. I have worked with Ginever, Kelly and Thomas in a corporate/sponsorship setting and they wont be impressed with the currents group failure.

They would be much better to trade with than the Cows. In my opinion, Gibbs is exactly what they need.

Really hope we arent chasing Trengove from Port. Dont think we need him especially with Casboult staying.

If we could get Aaron Young very cheap I would do that. Have seen him play some good games as a hassling defensive forward. Need more guys who can apply pressure and lock the ball inside forward 50.

I reckon the Port player with the most potential is Ah Chee. can kick a goal and likes to win the hard ball.

Probably too old at 24 years old but would be very cheap and only doesn't get a regular AFL gig due to playing a similar role to both Grey's.

In a nutshell: isn't a spud.

...we could have got Kennedy from Hawks, who wanted out for more game time for a second rounder too:mad::mad::mad: but committed to a hobbling Mclean:mad::mad:

A little bit lobsided in our favour these deals, but throw in Buckley, Boekhurst and Graham that should even it up

Re: Darcy Lang

Darcy is someone I'd definitely be interested in.

He's one we asked about last year as part of the Tuohy trade but he was contracted for 2017 and opted to stay and fight for his spot.

Played just the 8 senior games this year and there are some pretty handy names being linked with the Cats at the moment so you'd think now he's out of contract he may be more open to looking elsewhere for greater opportunities at senior level.

That being the case I dare say there'd certainly be a level of interest there at our end as long as the price is right. Talented footballer who has some really good upside, would come relatively cheap and at 22 has a long career ahead of him if he's good enough.

Seems to have spent most of his time at senior level at half forward but from memory was predominantly a midfielder as a junior. Probably doesn't have the body to play consistently as an inside mid at AFL level but with a bit of continuity he may be able to develop into a very handy outside midfielder.

Personally I'd be happy to see him in navy blue next year. For what he'd likely cost I dare say he's certainly worth taking a chance.

We were in a worse position end of 2015

I'm comparing both teams now, not back then. But yes, our list was appalling back in 2015.

But we have taken big strides to fix that. We no longer have the worst list now, given our great level of experience and the upcoming talent we are seeing. All we need is a little more class and to fix up our deficiencies.

North have just begun their rebuild by abruptly cutting some of the experienced heads off the list. It wouldn't surprise me if the media still considered them ahead of us (because they are brain-dead morons). But the fact is our pillars and foundations are set up nice and strongly. We look a more attractive club moving forward.

I initially tried to suppress the McLean trade pain, but I ended up throwing things at the TV every time a toothpaste commercial came on.
