I keep reading about Shaz's intercept marking, but can't recall any instances of it. He reads the game beautifully and thus gets quite a lot of uncontested intercepts, but I can't recall a single time where I've seen him take a genuine overhead mark or even gone third man up to impact a contest.
Watch more VFL. He will translate the stuff he did there to senior level soon enough, he just needs some time. It’s very easy to forget this was his first uninterrupted year of footy.

Fog @ 6

Taylor or Petty @ 38

Or

Coffield @ 6

Wooller @ 38

Would be happy with either of those two outcomes, but the first would be ideal. Much easier to find a decent KPD later in the draft than a KPF, and Fogarty has midfield scope so he can possibly move there if we get Lynch.

Dude’s played 10 games after the best part of three seasons decimated by injury and still he cops it! That’s despite averaging 20ppg, bizarre match selection and overall slotting straight in. Sometimes I wonder...

Would love if the club walked away with;
6. Coffield/ Fogarty
38. Petty (if he can last this long)
56. McLean
61. Guelfi
Either 70 or Rookie pick for T Brown

We have to take Tyler at some point in the ND now that we've nominated him as a FS.

He likely wasn't making it through to the Rookie draft anyway which is why we nominated him I suspect.

Those aren't goal posts...

Surely Fogarty doesn't get to pick 13

He won't make it past pick 6 - if he's still available.

I don't pay a huge amount of attention to the hacks at SEN when they do an opinion piece - they're pretty good at breaking news but like most other mainstream outlets they generally miss the mark on anything that requires a bit of deeper thought and analysis.

You're right, I've only seen him live at VFL once, but even in the TV games and the highlights I've seen, I haven't seen any impact in the air. From what I've seen, he plays like a more composed Josh Smith, rather than like Howe or Langdon.

Honestly I’m hoping that much like Grundy, Fogarty hasn’t had much attention from Collingwood because they don’t think he’ll be there at 6 and are pleasantly surprised. He’s exactly what we need at this point.

I wasn't having a go at him, I was just suggesting that perceptions of his style are off the mark at the moment. He's not an intercept marker at the moment

I think we will see a different (improved) Shaz this year, he made a solid contribution last year, most importantly injury free and IMHO he is a little light framed and should bulk up a little over the preseason and build the tank a little more. I would like to say with confidence we are covered in this area and he will deliver on early expectations but there is some hesitation due to the numerous injuries and the types of injuries he has had to overcome.

I've been on the fence with Naughton, he appeals due to being Round 1 ready and we would basically own the air in defence with Him/Howe/Berg.. but going over his highlights again, it's a big no from me.. We just can't select another suspect kick.

But it would be just like Hine to select another butcher, he loves em!

Petty to cash in on need for key backs

SOUTH Australian defender Harrison Petty shapes as a possible surprise in the first 25 picks at this month's NAB AFL Draft as clubs look to bolster their key position stocks.

The 194cm backman enjoyed a strong 2017 season, and was named South Australia's most valuable player at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. He also won All Australian honours for his efforts at the carnival.

Some clubs rate Petty as one of the best tall defenders available at the draft, with his strong overhead presence and good rebound making him a contender to break into the latter stages of the first round or early in the second round when names are called.

Part of Petty's appeal is the view from various recruiters that he is relatively untapped, with this season his first in the elite talent pathway after coming from a regional background.

The 17-year-old averaged 12 disposals and four marks at the national carnival but did not complete any of the athletic testing at the national NAB AFL Draft Combine after rolling his ankle in the kicking and goalkicking trials on the opening night.

With the majority of the early part of this year's draft dominated by midfielders and smaller types, the key position prospects are more difficult to place with a wide variety of opinions on where they sit in the pecking order.

West Australian pair Aaron Naughton and Oscar Allen are expected to feature in the first round, while Bendigo Pioneers swing man Jarrod Brander is also likely to be picked in the same range. Powerful South Australian forward Darcy Fogarty is another who has been linked as a possible top-10 choice.

Tom McCartin, the younger brother of St Kilda's Paddy, has suitors and could be selected inside the first 30 picks after showing promising signs at stages this season, while defenders Oscar Clavarino and Sam Taylor are also a chance to fit in the same bracket.

Aiden Bonar's progress late in the year after returning from two knee reconstructions has rocketed him into first-round calculations, and the 190cm forward has also been linked as a possible top-10 pick on draft night. However, that appears more unlikely than likely.

After 10 games and his injuries. Sometimes things are best left to settle. I’d also suggest that he’s finding it challenging to be an intercept marker because he’s needed to spend too much time covering for others...

There was a VFL final a few years ago where he was bog in the first half and probably took 7-8 intercepts. Also see the intra club practice match this season where he outmanoeuvred and outmarked Grundy a few times in 1v1 contests. Grundy is not a great forward but he has about 15cm/kg on Schaz so its something to take note of imo

He has fabulous judgment of the fight of the ball and knows how to use his body against bigger opponents. Also reads the game upfield very well which is a big advantage for a zoning defender and also makes up for his lack of pace which is a weakness (although much exaggerated imo).

It may not seem immediately obvious in his few games at senior level since he still has some work to do in the gym to compete effectively against senior players. He has only played 10 games!

Why do we need another intercepting defender when we already have Langdon, Howe, Reid, Schaz. That's already potentially an unbalanced amount imo. Naughton as an intercept marking defender is definitely not an immediate need and certainly shouldn't be selected at 6 as best available.

I'm reasonably happy with where we're at with medium - tall sized defenders. We need to do better when the ball hits the ground but they seem to have identified Murray for this and given we've delisted Ramsay/sinclair it's a big vote of confidence that he's the right guy.

Coffield and Fogarty can also do jobs in defence and I'd be flabbergasted if we passed on either, especially for someone like Naighton.

I agree. We need another Presti/Talia type who can reliably beat his man each game.

I think using 2 second round picks on Aish has really hurt the club. I know is was 3 seasons be ago, however the knock on effect of having to use this year’s second on Hoskin Elliot has left a hole. It seems there will be a number of reasonable key backman around the 20-30 mark.

Who compared him to Jack Darling? way off the mark there Fog has much more to his game then Darlings one trick.

I think the only place I've got the Similar Player thing from was Knightmare, and it was months ago. This and the positions is something I will hopefully update between now and draft day.

In case anyone is interested, I've updated this with Cal Twomey and Bishop's most recent power rankings.

View attachment 433608

Around the mark:

The Fog *tick*
Petty available til 40 (Not likely, but would jump on)
Dannyboy The wee man replacement (he's tiny but fast)
SOG

It says on Twomey's draft ranking that Coffield is like Jackson Nelson.Pardon my ignorance, but who the hell is Jackson Nelson?Never heard of him.
West Coast youngster who has been injured. Quick line breaker but doesn’t have the scope like Coffield does imo.
