Review 2017 Qualifying Final: Box Hill Hawks v Port Melbourne, 3 September 2017, 2.00pm @ BHCO

The Hawks' 2017 finals campaign gets off with a tantalising game between the Hawks and Port Melbourne at Box Hill City Oval. The Borough visited the Hawks' home ground a few weeks ago and came away with a comfortable victory, so the Hawks will hope to turn the tables and earn a week off before planning for a preliminary final. However, the Borough (coached by Gary Ayres) feature a number of seasoned VFL players who will be eyeing off their own crack at history and will be keen to repeat the dose.

In round 18, 2017, Port Melbourne were never really challenged by the Hawks, holding a 12 point lead at quarter time, seeing it reduced to nine points at half time, extending it to 12 points at three quarter time and then kicking away with four goals to two in the final quarter.

Frosty Miller medal winner Jordan Lisle kicked four goals to be the prime threat for the Borough, while Kade Stewart was the only multiple goal kicker for the Hawks that afternoon.

Now that the VFL finals campaign has started, Hawthorn and Box Hill memberships will not entitle the holder to free entry to the ground. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for concession card holders and pensioners, while children under 15 are free.

The development squad commences its last finals campaign with an elimination final away to Williamstown (in one of the more bizarre AFL Victoria fixturing decisions as the Hawks are technically hosting Williamstown at Williamstown's home ground) on Saturday, 2 September at 11.00am.

The development team's season ended with a 22 point loss to Williamstown. The game was virtually over at 1/4 time when we failed to take advantage of a 4 to 5 goal breeze. Williamstown kicked the opening goal of each quarter and handled the conditions far better. We regularly overturned the ball when we were kicking both with and against the breeze with our players playing from behind. Cox, Kennedy, Kilpatrick and Lane who were named on the extended interchange for the senior team played today.

Box Hill Hawks 3.1-19 4.1-25 6.8-44 7.10-52

Jones and Lovell are to be expected as a facial fracture and a re-damaged shoulder are not injuries that a fixed in a couple of weeks. However, I was hoping Schoey might have been available later in the finals say around the Preliminary Final.
