Only managed one game this season for a team that won the wooden spoon, so I'm going to pass.

If you can't get a game at Brisbane it probably means you won't succeed as an AFL player.

How to win the offseason:

Retirees:
M. Priddis
S. Mitchell
S. Butler
D. Petrie (A Rookie)

Delistings:
S. Tunbridge (A Rookie)
F. McInnes (A Rookie)
P. Brophy (B Rookie)
J. Giles

Free Agency:
Pay overs to recruit the following; we have space available, just get them.
T. Rockliff
S. Motlop

Trade:

Currently we have picks 13, 30, 48, 67 & 85 in the national draft. That is insufficient to recruit the talent that is required to build a premiership winning squad. Thus it will need to be improved during the trade period:

Due to Richmond's forward press success, players who are capable of tackling inside attacking 50 are in high demand. Cripps, being the league leader in this statistic will never be fetch a higher value than what he does right now. Here he has been traded to Carlton for pick 38 plus an 8 pick downgrade. This places his value equivalent to pick 44-45 which I think is about right.

Gold Coast are in need of mature aged players, particularly through the midfield - Masten would be useful for them in this regard. Here we gain a second round pick upgrade in exchange for him and a third round pick. It means the Suns receive him for the equivalent of pick 62.

View attachment 421543
Brisbane are going to recruit academy product Connor Ballendean, the question is what they are going to pay for it. It is likely he will be bid upon by another club between picks 8-20. The problem for the Lions is they have picks 1, 12, 18, 41, 73 and thus will have to use pick 12 or 18 (or both) in order to draft him should a high bid come in from another club. Offering two second round picks in exchange for pick 12 gives them the flexibility to cover all options whilst retaining four picks inside the top 30. We get a first round pick - win-win. For what it's worth picks 24 & 30 combined is equal to pick 10, but pick 12 will do fine.

The Bulldogs need a ruckman. Lycett will never achieve his potential in the shadow of Naitanui and could do with a change. Third round pick plus later minor pick downgrades should do it. This classifies him as equivalent to pick 43 in value.

Schofield is fourth in line for a key defensive position in the squad and comes from Geelong. Geelong have had a number of key defensive players retire and will be looking for replacements. Third round to second round upgrade should satisfy both parties. This puts his value at pick 60.

View attachment 421547
Lamb looks east and we get an upgrade. St Kilda get a Riewoldt replacement project and keep two first round picks. Places Lamb's worth at pick 49 equivalent.

View attachment 421549
Boom! Gaff looks east as well and we get a major say in this year's draft. Kangaroos retain a first round pick whilst getting an All-Australian. Places Gaff as equal to pick 11 in value.

View attachment 421550
Small upgrade in fourth pick whilst providing Hawthorn a fifth option. Picks 62 & 70 are equal to pick 59 so this isn't far off par.

View attachment 421551
Another trade of lower picks for upgrade. Picks 60 & 61 are equal to pick 50. Pick 89 comes as well only because the Tigers will never use it.

View attachment 421552
Brendon Ah Chee is seeking a move back to WA. This lessens his value such that a third round pick becomes viable for a trade.

These are all simple and fair trades. Now we have two picks in the top 10 and a high second rounder.

Draft:

With the above in mind, I would intend to select the following:

Pick 4. -- P. Dow
Pick 8. -- J. Higgins
Pick 21. -- J. Worpel
Pick 81. -- Best available (ruck preferred)
Pick 85. -- Best available (key forward preferred)
Pick 89. -- Best available

Category A Rookie Picks x4
Category B Rookie Picks x1

Result:

We've strengthened our midfield deficiency with both mature and young talent and set the stage for the next dynasty of Eagles domination.

Out:
M. Priddis
S. Mitchell
S. Butler
J. Giles
J. Cripps
C. Masten
S. Lycett
W. Schofield
T. Lamb
A. Gaff
D. Petrie (A Rookie)
S. Tunbridge (A Rookie)
F. McInnes (A Rookie)
P. Brophy (B Rookie)

In:
T. Rockliff
S. Motlop
B. Ah Chee
P. Dow
J. Higgins
J. Worpel
Pick 81
Pick 85
Pick 89
Category A Rookie Picks x4
Category B Rookie Pick x1

Be brave, get value for what you can and make the most of the draft.
Very interesting post, obviously West Coast won't be doing this many trades but a lot of what-ifs here that are worth considering. Props for the work that went into this.

Free Agents: Not sure about getting Rockliff and Motlop. We may be able to afford them this year but I worry it will prevent us from landing bigger recruits in future. Rockliff can rack up possessions but can he use it well & apply the defensive pressure we lacked this year playing both Priddis & Mitchell? Would Motlop give us anything different to Jetta, surely we couldn't play both?

Trade 1: Given the importance of forward pressure I wonder whether keeping Cripps is a wiser option. I know he was down on form this year but I'd back him in as our defensive forward, as long as we have more talented small/mediums coming in to play a more creative & offensive role (Rioli, Waterman and Venables fingers crossed). Your value of Cripps here seems OK though, given his drop in form this year.

Trade 2: Nobody's going to complain about offloading Masten. 62 seems a decent approximation. If GC are keen to add more experience this might actually work given their wealth of 2nd rounders.

Trade 3: A bold ploy and interesting given the situation with Brisbane's academy and not wanting to overpay. Might work out well for both parties.

Trade 4: Lycett for ~43, as much as I like him, is a decent trade and probably overs TBH. He is riddled with injuries and hasn't yet put a good season together, although clearly attacks the ball and man hard and is dangerous up forward. Not sure he will ever be a dominant ruck though.
For those who think ruckmen have some kind of special premium, let's have some context from last year's trade period:
- Nankervis went for 46 last year and is about to play as 1st ruck in a grand finalist team.
- Witts went for 44 and 62, has been one of Gold Coast's few good contributors in a terrible year.
- Vardy went for 72, well we all know he's been solid, had flashes of brilliance, but not dominant in the ruck. Lycett's story could be much the same.
- Stewart went for 77, has kicked 22 goals and been solid for Essendon this year albeit as a forward not in the ruck.
I don't think Lycett's value is far from those types.

Trade 5: If Schofield wanted out this seems an OK trade, but I don't think he'll want to go as he seems very settled in Perth.

Trade 6: This is where your big trade-up falls down IMO. Lamb is just not worth anything, the only way he goes back to Victoria is with a token late pick (>80) or as a DFA. To involve him in a top 10 pick upgrade would be laughable from a St Kilda perspective.

Trade 7: I think Gaff leaving is not a good outcome for WC as it depletes our already class-deprived midfield even more, although getting access to Pick 4 would be the best possible outcome.

Trades 8 & 9: No issues here, it improves our position.

Trade 10: Interestingly the only player you have elected to trade for, seems a decent option though and a third rounder would get it done. Seems a bit generous to Port though, as he is out of contract and a fringe player.

Do people honestly think players like Cripps or Wellingham who have started their AFL careers playing football for a melbourne club, and have been involved in a trade to bring them all the way back home to WA... are going to be putting their hand up to be traded over east again?

I just don't see it. The club isn't going to trade anyone who doesn't want to be traded, and they've relocated twice already.

Got to be realistic with some of these trade suggestions. Cripps isn't going to be traded.

If you can't get a game at Brisbane it probably means you won't succeed as an AFL player.

The Brisbane midfield I don’t really know but assume it is quite strong with Beams ,Zorko ,Rockliff plus draftees Berry and Macluggage,Ben Keays Rhys Mathieson,Tom Bell,Ryan Bastinac ..

So Jansen looks to be depth only and the list for 2017 with low draft picks and academy players scheduled to be drafted it’s would be easy to get offloaded for list space ..

I think we can only get one of Ah Chee or Jansen. Picking up both would probably be overkill.

Well 1 player will cost a draft pick the other a rookie list spot ..

1 player is 24 yrs old the other is 22 yrs old ..

Quite a simple choice ..

Not really in my view. Who projects as the better player should be the first question. Then, taking that into consideration, who is the better value.

I posses absolutely ZERO excitement in adding Jansen to the list.

4 years in the AFL system for a total of 1 game. Most recently 2 years on the list for the worst team in the AFL and still nothing.

Sure he's absolutely free, but then again so is Bailey Banfield (or was), and so are other young players with potential we could be adding who haven't already had 4 years in the AFL system for next to nothing to show for it.

Waaaaaaaaay better than Redden though.

I'd take Clark every day of the week, and not just because of his headband.

Versatile, quick, x factor, inside/outside, cleans his room, but most importantly... Has a hunger for the contest and actually wants to win :handfist:
heard he hates doing the 45's.

Ones played for 3 AFL coaches and hasn't been seen as good enough by any, and been delisted by the bottom side. And been playing in probably the lowest standard state comp in the country and has average stats in that.

The other has had one coach that plays him clearly out of position when he picks him, and finished 2nd best player in one of the strongest state comps in the country despite playing a heap less games than everyone else.

Talk about a simple choice

8 games.

The fact that carbine is jumping hard on the ah Chee train is a bad omen.

Anyone remember some bloke called Adamson?

Yep, would have been decent if used properly as a bullocking inside mid but was never given an opportunity at AFL level to show what he had. Pretty standard for most kids in our reserves it seems. Was used incorrectly on the weekend as a stopping backman as well in the WAFL GF imo.
