Just to be clear, this perception that WC draft perma-injured players is based solely on Dan Venables right? I guess if you were being picky you could throw in Damien Cavka taking at a whopping pick 66 three years ago.

I swear one year ago all we were hearing was how we only draft conservatively and pick players with limited upside.
It's just such a WC thing to do. Drafting guys with injuries, picking up other club rejects just because they were top 10 picks 5 years ago. Trying for the Hail Mary "we outsmarted everyone" pick when in actual fact there's reasons why players slide.

Obviously it's going to work sometimes (hopefully with Venables) but in a draft where 5-20 are pretty even, the chance of picking a gun player is pretty much the same as taking the risk on the injured player anyway, take Fyfe for example. 20 something pick.

I'd rather be having a shot at a guy with a clean bill of health with the same "potential". Leave the risky picks for the rookie list.

Stephenson has looked really good, haven't heard much about him previously though.
Bonner has also looked good, those two ACL's though....

Godfather32 my understanding of the Bonar situation is that it was two lots of surgery but the second was to do a patch up job on the first operation that had not been 100 % successful. Which isn't as bad as having blown the knee twice.

I also have heard that he is being given serious consideration by two Clubs that may take him much higher than the general consensus range of a mid second round pick.

His last six weeks production and todays performances will certainly have caught the attention of the Clubs.

Stephenson seems like the player GWS would love.

Apparently the Saints have a massive hard on for him with either 7 or 8.
North are fans as well and they have pick # 4.

Why would how many games they play after we draft them have any effect on where we drafted them?
I would class a perma-injured player as someone that struggles through their career with injuries. Obviously the club recognised that the previous injuries would have no effect on their future AFL career when it came to players like Swift and Judd who had shoulder injuries pre draft. Venables looks like he will be fine. Cavka was the only real punt we have taken but it was with a late pick so no real loss.

The whole "typical Eagles" thing is a just another hyperbole rant.

Well we're talking about our penchant for taking injured/underage players in the draft as a way of trying to outsmart everyone else so their injury status after they've been drafted has absolutely no bearing on the discussion whatsoever.

That goal he kicked in the 3rd was a very classy finish. Liked his game today.

Would be happy with him as a 2nd- not sure he gets that far after today though?

Stephenson looks a very likely #1 after today. Looked very comfortable in the middle and up forward. Going to be an interesting top 3, I reckon.

Stephenson was always going to be a top 8 pick imo, he's the perfect damaging outside player. Would be a good fit for Saints.

Unlike Gaff who runs around absolutely stuffed, scabs handball receives running onto his right foot and fluffs more kicks than he hits targets.

Stephenson has a few more tricks in the old kit bag whereas Gaff relies purely on his endurance.

Yeh wasn't too bad, wouldn't take him with out first but if he ended up around our second I'd definitely consider him

Way to early for me , fourth rounder contention for my liking.

So lads, who do we pick

Hasn't changed for me this is the group I would pick from :

Brayshaw.
Constable.
Higgins.
Coffield.
Clark.
O'Brien.

Haha, you obviously don't think much of him?

I have seen him live in half a dozen games and I do rate him but not before the fourth round to rookie.
Yes he had a better game today but my opinions are rarely swayed by one game I prefer to look more at the body of work
