WCE 2nd round selections for the last decade:

2007
Pick 20 - Tony Notte
Pick 22 - Scott Selwood

2008
Pick 20 - Tom Swift

2009
Pick 22 - Gerrick Weedon

2010
Pick 29 - Scott Lycett

2011*
Picks 23 and 28 were first round and netted Newman and Mccines

2012*
Our first pick was start of the 3rd round at 45 Brant Collage

2013
Pick 31 - Malcolm Carpany

2014
Pick 32 - Tom Lamb

2015
Pick 28 - Luke Partington

2016
Pick 37 - Josh Rotham

Not a single blue chip player or even high level contributor on the list. That's not to say recent picks won't come good, but WC history with 2nd round selections is terrible.

That is a horrible list.
However, lets look at how many "A/B-grade" players have gone in the 2nd round:

2007:
Ward (19), Selwood (2/16: 12.5%)

2008:
Ballantyne (21), Zaharakis (23), Redden (25), D. Beams (29), Hannebery (30), Liam Shiels (34) (6/16: 37.5%)

2009:
Fyfe (20), Carlisle (24), Duncan (28), Gunston (29) (4/16: 25%)

2010:
Lycett (29), Howe (33), Parker (40), (3/17: 17%)

2011:
B. Hill (33), Newnes (37) (2/18: 11%)

2012:
NONE (worst draft ever) 0%

2013:
Impey (21), M Crouch (23), Z Merret (26), Taylor (28), Lobb (29), Nankervis (35) (6/18: 33%)

2014:
McLean (26), Miller (29), Blakely (34) (3/18: 16%)

So basically from 137 second round picks 30 have been a winners and very good players.

So that's about a 22% chance.

Ignoring 2015 and 2016 as too early to tell.
We have had 2 winners (Selwood and Lycett) from 10 picks. So 20% success, which is just below the average.

So while it's not great, the 2nd round is full of duds.

(this was a huge waste of time)

Edit: Actually 137 picks for 30 winners.
So 22% success rate

2015 - Western Bulldogs trading with Carlton

As good a precedent as the Eagles are likely to see.

The deal: Western Bulldogs gave up pick 11 and a 2016 third-round selection in exchange for Carlton’s picks 20 and 21.

The outcome: The Bulldogs picked up Josh Dunkley and big-bodied key defender Kieran Collins. The Blues landed rising forward Charlie Curnow – a player dubbed talented enough to be the best player in the league. Dunkley is now a premiership player, but unless the trajectory of Curnow’s development slows, Carlton win this deal comfortably.

To me that is enough for me to not trade out first rounder!

Starcavich is a reach in the early to mid second round as is Ryan and Kelly IMO. They are very late seconds to third round picks.

Spargo, OBrien, Worples are better second round options......Oscar Allen may still be around at 25.
I would be stoked with Obrien at an early second . Yes he is outside but has a lazer like left boot , massive tank and great overhead mark .

Happy with the Ah Chee trade. Bit of a concern that he didn't nail down a regular spot with Port but in context, they have heaps of mid talent so not that much of a biggie given that on paper, he has great potential for a required need for not much given up.

The reality is we're in Siberia out here in the west. Hopefully we focus on strengthening our future draft position and give ourselves currency to lure away established, local midfield talent that's playing with interstate clubs. That is our best hope for the future.

Reality is we need to be thinking big picture and playing the long game, imo.

You mean fivestrings?
What happened to that bloke.

He is in the witness protection program, apparently hiding out somewhere deep in Mexico under some local alias.

So you're telling me it's possible to run your own business and moderate on Bigfooty #mindblown.

If you knew his business, you would understand why he needs an outlet and some comic release on Big Footy.

There is a bit of science involved. They rank the kids with a points system. This year the ranking of 130 point players started dropping away after pick 30. Next years crop allegedly doesnt drop off until close to 50 kids.

But it is a tad subjective fir sure.

Still is and always will be a total lottery, huge numbers of every draft don't make it yet AFL clubs still put their faith in it hoping they will get a Judd type. Absolute madness if you ask me.

If that's Conchita Alias he is under then we will not be hearing from him for quite some time!

Just to randomly cut in with a completely different subject: I am starting to convince myself we will take Lochie O'Brien with 13. It just seems like such WC first round pick in the Simpson era - not necessarily a good contested player but elite skills. I actually think he will be decent but the lack of contested game might hurt his ceiling. On the other hand, he could become another Josh Kelly.
