Disagree. They have no first round picks and the only thing it's been floated the need is forward pressure.

We have 3 first round picks we can trade and an abundance of forward pressure types.

If it's up to GWS to find a suitable trade we are in the box seat.

And with an already bulging TPP how will they afford this mature talent without trading out mature talent on good coin?
This is why the door is slightly open for a play at Whitfield and other contracted players. This is why Kelly is looking at his options.
They will need to in the next 14 months trade out a couple of decent players (even with Johnson going) on good money to be able to have any chance of re-signing their elite kids. Or they will lose more gun kids because they simply won't have the money for them.
They have an embarrassment of riches which is causing them headaches.

Spoke with a high level Carlton member ( and ex Saint coach ) last night and he said they would love Kelly but aren't in the race.
Mentioned the relationship with Kelly and Steele as well. Which reinforces what the GWS exec said to me the other week.

- Asked about Ess article by Robbo about getting Kelly. PC replied that he hadnt seen it but had heard about it. Said something along the lines of, written by Robbo a Bombers supporter right? (Basically laughed and said Ess isnt in picture IMO)
- Spoke about Hodge for a bit (tribute)
- on Kelly again. Said JK should be commended for his excellent footy, etc. Spoke to him a week or two ago about not being in a hurry to decide and is focused on finals campaign. Spoke about his family(Dad is a 2x Sandover winner) as support network, etc. Then said if he stays its with a talented group, blah, blah, blah. Then spoke of if he comes back to Melbourne, it will be for family.

PC obviously trying not to give anything away, but after listening to that I would think JK is heading home to Melbourne, with Family an important part. If anything, i feel slightly bouyed by what I heard.

I hate to say it but with Jack Fitzpatrick retiring because of concussion we are about one serious knock away from needing a tall forward at the draft table or from a trade.

Each time someone cites concussion as the reason for retirement it builds the awareness of the problem for someone like Paddy.

If that happens we've still got Josh Battle and Rowan Marshall. We'll be fine we've got enough quality and depth in pretty much every position other than the midfield so it's probably about time we started focusing on that.

My impression, listening to the tone of the interview, was that Essendon weren't even in the hunt. A journalist (Robinson) who supports Essendon is floating an idea that he hopes is true.

Connors was chortling while speaking. Even he seemed surprised.
