******* stupid article. "yeah we got rid of 3 midfielders and a small forward, but dont worry we have a 3rd tall, back flanker, and 2 small forwards to replace them with"

i ******* hope we target mature agers or else we'd better hope the injury worries at the end of this year dont return

Very interesting, what i get from this is our 1st 2 picks will be kids mature after that?
I don’t think our depth has taken a hit with those departures because when you analyse it the only player that was a lock at the highest level was Conca. Stengle didn’t get the opportunity but small forward depth is not an issue.

Also our 2s were looking unstoppable well into the season this year so there was nothing wrong with depth 5 months ago.

I reckon we’ll pick up 3 or 4 mature aged recruits and similar number of u18 kids. We’ll back in our beefed up recruiting team to identify young talent with later picks

I think the club would assess what would be the projected picks around the 15-18 range, so might trade next years first for 2 picks in the 20's

If they reckon that this years draft is choccas full of the players we want and some clubs have 20's picks they don't value this year (e.g. GC) then why not. Depending on what they reckon next year will bring - Draft, Academy, FS.

Especially if there are likely to be a few really talented Vic mids dropping because of the interstate dominance in early picks and an abundance of good mids then go for it. Smart trading and drafting. We can always wait for T71 to alert us to what's happening  :p.

Our depth did take a hit. But was it a hit that will hurt us long term of strengthen us. I'd guess strengthen. We lost players that weren't stepping into the firsts. We have space to include guys that can develop. But next year we have fewer mature mid options - that's a loss of depth. the article indicated that we have some mature agers in mind. OK. But many of the best will already be gone. Still I'm not upset about how we've gone about it this year. If we can get a coupl of those quality mids that slip then I reckon we have really built a nice list going forward.

Yer I guess we won’t really know if our depth has taken a hit until we see how well our new recruits perform in 2019. The mature players we bring in might be an upgrade on Lloyd, Miles and CEllis, that’s a call we’ll make in 12 months time.

While I still want Luke Valente to join the club, I'm starting to think he'll be around at our second pick based on updated rankings. The one I would love to fall to 17 is Xavier O'Halloran 187cm 83 kg inside midfielder from Western Jets who captained Vic Metro.

Combine Results:
Equal 7th kicking test
Equal 10th vertical jump
8th 20m sprint
2nd agility test
Equal 5th yo-yo test

Reckon he would be a chance of being in the 22 for round 1 given his size and with a full preseason.
Whilst I'd love someone like Valente to side to 37, I just can't see it happening. Especially because Essendon has #34 and also need inside mids.

If they take him it probably means Ely Smith is available. I really don't think we'll miss out on a couple of big bodied inside midfielders with first 2 picks if that is what we really want to take.

Think our best bet would be to trade into the twenties while maintaining our 1st rounder. Definitely think we should put next years first on the table.

I've floated it before but I'd hope the club explore next years Gold Coast 3rd round pick(37) + 64 + 68 which is enough points to get a high 20's/low 30's pick this year. Means we get 3 picks inside 40 this year and maintain our first 2 picks for next year with the likes of Jack Martin Jacob Hopper Josh Kelly Stephen Coniglio & Josh Dunkley coming out of contract.

64 and 68 should become more valuable after fs and academy bids too. Surely some club would value that?

Depth players aren't meant to be a lock, or else they wouldn't be depth players. Our depth hasn't taken a hit, it has been shattered.

Just ask yourself that when prestia inevitably misses through injury, who Is a reasonable like for like replacement? God forbid 2 of our 4 midfielders are injured at the same time.

If I was the Suns I'd offer 6 & 24 to Saints for 4 & 36 so I could take Lukocious Rakine and Rozee. 3 SA boys that could move up and live together means less likely to want to leave. If not take the King twins and Bailey Smith and start the rebuild with a great foundation.

If I was Gold Coast I would take Ben & Max King with 2 & 3 to replace their tall stocks that they just lost with May/Lynch...

Can’t see them both wanting to return to Melbourne if they get drafted to GCS, so is a safe bet for the club. Take best mid with their next pick

Im not really up to speed with the draft
So i would love to hear people's thoughts
On who we'll target with our first pick i need
A name to start getting excited about.

If that situation arose and we had to rely on Miles and Lloyd etc. al in the team at the same time, we would likely lose anyway, as they are simply not quick enough skilled enough etc.
Surely its time to try and upgrade our depth to players that can still win us games when we have injuries, no disrepect meant but really think 2016.

What if the replacements from this years draft are upgrades?

I don’t think it’ll be that difficult to replace Miles and Lloyd who struggled at AFL level despite being good VFL performers

CEllis - meh pick 64 in the draft will give us just as much

Stengle- doubt would have got an opportunity with Rioli Butler Bolton Higgins George and Baker played before him

Conca - was a solid performer that I would have like to have kept but he was a role player who can be replaced.

We lost no A or B graders which was the result we were after

Posters unhappy with losing depth players have understand that most of them would have been delisted anyway to make way for draft picks.

Getting the 4th round picks could mean a player that club rates highly is available at pick 64/68 instead of being gone by picks 74 and 92.

Pick 64 will end up being around the mid 50s after all the academy and f/s bids. Could get another Jack Graham with that pick.

Higgins stepped into the midfield last year when Prestia was out. Rioli has always been in the mix to go into the midfield and with a full preseason this year should do that. With Lynch coming in Caddy can go through the midfield more often, same goes with Townsend who won a JJ Liston medal as a midfielder before we asked him to play as a marking forward. That is 4 extra options to rotate through, without even adding in the kids we pick up in the draft.

But you keep on having your chicken little moments where everything is going wrong if it makes you feel better.
