If he has a footballers brain, reads the ball well in flight then that's all a good player needs to get separation.
McCarthy would be elite if he could read the flight of the ball better, Kersten has speed, no white line fever or strong
contested mark.
A similar game to Waterman's boy and I would pull the trigger.
I agree. It is about the mix, and with Taberner, McCarthy, Dixon and O"Reilley (possibly Cox, Apeness) we can get what we need.

Having Dillon walking up at 195cm would exclude him from ruck duties (I hope, it didn't work for Cox) so we might be able to have a key forward inside fifty all the time as long as he plays alongside Taberner and McCarthy is played as the third tall that suits him best.

My concern with O'Reilly is his production. He kicks goals but his other stats are pretty average.

We are not the Eagles; are game is all about mobility and endurance. I can't see us playing more than a two properly tall forward line (with a medium tall that is also a proper midfielder ala Mundy or Fyfe), and one of those talls will be a ruck / forward (currently Taberner's position) to save us from having a backup ruck who will have a lot of bench time that could be provided to another runner type. I can't see a combination of Taberner + McCarthy + Another Tall any time soon; it is too much of a risk to our mobility strategy.

Remember the first thing we did with all of our talls during the off-season was make them run billions of laps? If OReilly can't run and run then he won't be rated highly by us. That isn't to say he won't get drafted by us, but that would rely on others overlooking him such that he fell to a position that we thought he was a bargain at.

I think we'll learn a lot more about O'Reilly once the u18s champs start. He's clearly the primary target inside 50 for WA and with guys like Ian Hill delivering the ball he won't have many excuses if he doesn't perform. I still think endurance is his main weakness and I have no read on whether he's capable of building it. I trust our recruitment guys would be all over it though. I like him for the exact reason I liked Darcy Fogarty last year - they have a real noticeable presence inside 50. Even when they aren't getting the ball they are worrying the defenders and freeing up the other forwards.

Patrick Farrant kicked 4.2 for Swan Districts colts today. I wish he'd win a bit more of the ball - only averaging 10.5 disposals this year so far - would also like to see him play seniors now that he is a mature ager. Luke Moore played for South Freo against him today and kicked 2 of their 3 goals to go with 22 disposals. He was in really good form at the end of last year (kicked 7.1 in one game) - he's the WA medium forward I'm most keen to see at u18 champs - feel he'd be talked about more if playing for a better team. Will be interesting seeing him, O'Reilly and Hill all playing together in WA's forward line.

Anyone know Logan Foley? 15yo who kicked 4.1 goals from 5 disposals (and 5 marks) in his first ever Colts game for WP against Subi today. Pretty good i50 efficiency ;)

Logan Foley is a 16 year old 196cm forward who has been picked for the WA state 16s squad.

Thanks! Born 11 July 2002 so still only 15yo atm. 196cm sounds good!

We may have to use lots of picks on NGAs though.....and to make use of Fyfe we really need dominant players sooner rather than later.

Thanks Ysaye

Hately and Collier/Dawkins look interesting to me and fit well if we are wanting more grunt. Very exciting list there.

Yep I agree. Around our first pick I do also like Valente - whilst slightly smaller than those two his play is bullish and power based. I also like Thomas (Power + speed player that can and has played mid, key forward and back ).

I have to say though there are also some really good WA midfielders that can play multiple positions I think will be there in the second or even third rounds (English and Joyce in particular). We keep talking about depth - it is more cost effective if that depth is held in WA origin players IMO. Do we trade next years second for one this year? Will clubs be up for that?

a huge risk that would be gobbled up securing Carter.

How likely is it that Carter plays midfield?

Yeah fair point.

I see Carter eventually playing a similar role to Brad Hill or Ed Langdon - ie. lots of run and carry as an outside runner / off a wing. I don't see him playing back at AFL level unless he can transform his kicking Blakely style, which is possible.

So Carter is a bit of a **** kick then? That's disappointing.

If he is fast and agile but can't kick turn him into a pressure forward.

I don't think thats a bit premature. Had a long term leg injury and is still a kid. He may have issues with his kicking, but why define him at this stage?

I don't think he is bad kick, but not an elite kick. As someone else said, if you are going 100 miles an hour that makes it hard to be anything much more than a chipper or a bomber.

Is he NGA?

Don't believe so.

It doesn't matter what I say, he can kick or he can't. Good vibes on a forum isn't going to change that.

It is never a binary choice whether someone can kick or not and it is linked to the decision making process and timing as well. Take the St Kilda player from last year's draft Coffield - his kicking action and weighting is great after a mark but for mine he takes an age to kick it; Hunter Clark of the same team looks a little messier but kicks it a lot faster and is often on the move in traffic at the same time.

You can dress it however you like but we both know players are either good kicks or not. You can hit targets, or not. I don't care why he can or can't just whether he can do it.

Decision making is a separate skill which you can improve with time and experience depending on how willing and able to learn the player is. Kicking mechanics, weightings etc don't change much after drafting.

I can live with him being an ordinary decision maker when drafted, but the kicking skill not so much. Like the fact he has wheels though.

I really like the look of Hill. To me he would come in and immediately compete with Langdon and Tucker types. We would have significant depth but only marginal improvement.

In my ideal world we would be drafting a taller, bigger bodied mid. Someone more like Mundy/Fyfe. Or Logue with the midfield ability.

Why dont Freo try and get Acres from St Kilda? he hasnt really settled there and would be a better bet than most in the draft and happy to take Hill as well.
We may never find another great key forward they are nearly extinct by the looks of it coaches have conspired to phase them out saying would also love Oreilly in the Purple the way we are going we will have early picks and players to trade back.

If nobody wants key forwards why is TLynch going to get 1m+ a year offers from multiple clubs.

It's a myth. Jack Riewoldt is one of Richmond's best and most important players. The Dogs don't win their grand final without Boyd on the field.

Good chance O'Reilly will be available to us but is undersized for genuine KPP atm. Similar size to Cam. Acres for the right price. If we can convince Saints to swap Sherro for him as Gav says I don't mind. Don't think they'd be up for that.
