I have no problem with future picks per se, but this year we have two (possibly 3 if Mummy's injuries are too great) retirements on top of losing our first round pick, and having traded out our third round pick - so trading out 3 players all for future picks leaves us quite short for the national draft. We can get 1 or 2 DFAs, or upgrade someone off the rookie list so it's not a gigantic problem, but then we have excess picks next year and potentially only the one retirement. So I would think that one more reasonable pick this year is better than all 3 players bringing in 2018 picks. IMHO.

The GWS core team is OK to good. We are a team that reliably makes prelims.

I'm looking at the unwanted and the delisted - the Fossils, the Chads, the Mzungus - and we've done OK with them. They know they are there to play a role, and they do that. I'm sure we can get them this year, and it wont affect our ability to get into the top 4 and make a run at finals next year.

Thoughts on pick 11 and Wilson to Freo for pick 5?
Might need something else?
And then 5 and Kennedy tô Carlton for pick 3?

I can see us potentially doing one of those but not both as we would be giving up too much for 1 player.

If we stay where we are we are just about in the right position for Jack Higgins whom I believe would be a terrific fit.

If we traded up to 5 we might be in the Jaidyn Stephenson part who is an X factor kid that won’t have any dramas moving to Sydney. A kid with great leadership qualities.

At the moment we'll have five list spots going into the draft (Downie, Stevie J, Smith, Kennedy, Wilson).

We'll be using picks 11, 26, Wilson pick, Kennedy pick, and a couple of late picks to probably match an academy boy.

I can see why they want a pick this year to replace Wilson. I can also see why they'd give up what looks like overs in the Smith trade to get back up to the pointy end of the draft because otherwise we'd be stuck with too many early picks if we wanted any academy players.

The problem if we settled for a 2nd rounder this year for Smith is that the Bombers Pick would probably get pushed back into the 30’s by the time everything is done (compo).

In trading our future 2nd we are giving away a pick probably in the mid 30’s and getting a pick back probably late 40’s or early 50’s.

Knowing we will trade in at least one 2nd rounder which will be higher than ours makes that pretty sound to me.

Lets not forget Dev has a knee and was not best 22 at the end of the season. All in all I think it’s sound trading and we have pulled the Bulldogs pants down.

Agreed, next year's trade is probably a ten pick downgrade IMO.

We would need to be chasing a name ala McGrath or Taranto from last year

I’m not sure we have that target in mind at this point of the Year

I can live with that. Bombers fans seem to be ecstatic with it but I don't feel like we're getting robbed at all, good bit of business there

I'm glad the pick 11 would be going to us instead of the Dogs as well

Yep, im just happy to have him at the club, even better when you guys aren't unhappy either.

Don't see why a club has to lose while the other wins, hopefully both clubs can benefit from this and keep a good trading relationship into the future.

Good luck for the rest of the offseason.

It's the perfect trade when both teams are happy with the trade though!

I think we've traded away the future 2nd knowing we can get some better ones pretty easily this week. Making Fremantle sweat to give us a pick under 20 hopefully works. If we end up with 2 picks in the top 20 after the Whitfield penalty there gonna be some people spitting chips around here.

Content with the trade, but not ecstatic. In points value, EFC came out on top, but the deal does give us a vital pick in the first round now, so close to a win-win.

Keen to see what we do now. Suspect an upgrade to 5 for Wilson may be on the cards, which would ensure that we get someone we want, whereas at 11 good chance that who we want is gone - depending on who we want. However, Freo won't be keen to move down. Hope we don't give away too much value to entice them, though (if that is what we do). Reasonable value would be the swap (only worth about 500 points in itself) plus one of Freo's picks in the 50s or at least a pick swap. That would enable us to have first and second round picks, then match on two academy boys (even if some deficit occurs). Fifth replacement on main list would be DFA or rookie upgrade. (I expect a Shipley bid in 30s or 40s.)

The other option is to just accept a future Freo second round pick plus something this year (similar to preceding comments) and then a Blues' future second round pick for Kennedy.

We were pragmatic in the Smith trade, but might push a little harder on Wilson since he is contracted.

Have read that hawks are into Tim mohr. Wouldn't take much to get him and he we have the KPD depth to let him go
Wouldn't have a problem with him seeking AFL opportunities. Surprises me a bit. Talk they will delist Heatherley who I thought played really well against the Crows and us. Would more be worried for his future at the Hawks, but despite what some say I think they know what their doing.

Probably a question for Freo board but is there a chance if Freo moved from 5-11they would still get the player there eyeing.?From what I've read the talent levels drop after the top ten in this draft.

Come on, pick swap!
Might happen, but Mahoney came out this afternoon and basically said only the Watts and Balic deals are in play for us.

:(
