We need to find a replacement for Shaw as he's just about cooked. I can see the end coming for him very quickly.

Whilst he's always had a clanger in him this year his concentration was just lacking.

He is on a massive deal so we probably can shop for someone pretty special. McGrath is still unsigned for 2019 .

I reckon depending on how the knee goes bunts might get that small lock down role when Shaw leaves.

As far as Shaw goes I’m not certain he is cooked, his defensive efforts at some points of the season were great, people get frustrated when he turns the ball over but I think he still has plenty to offer

I'm in line with your thoughts Danny88 that Bunts might be the man to follow Shaw. Was in the leadership group previously, so presumably is seen to have leadership/organisational skills. Decent mark, reasonable at ground level, good kick. Everyone's always quick to sink the boot in when someone has a poorer season - fair enough that Shaw is getting older and nearing his career's end, but was AA only last season. I think Harry Perryman is another option being groomed - really good vision, good hands, although his kicking does need to improve.

Shipley went ok, but not so great by foot as the match went on. Must of got close to 20 touches.

Higgins would certainly be a good fit in our list.

i don't think it will happen, late start to training for him and have him ready a few games in and play 10-15 for the season
I still see a need for his presence around stoppages and also experience is still needed

This is a bit more detailed and revealing. Unsaid is the fact that we ptobably have to, and should pay him out anyway. Not sure if the Patful manouvre got his payment outside the cap and if we could do the same if nevessary. I'm not jumping up and down with glee at losing him, it'll be a sad moment, but the club is bigger than the person.

Greater Western Sydney have secretly given Heath Shaw a one-year contract extension, a move which helped ease salary-cap pressure next year and allowed the Giants to retain Josh Kelly.

Reading between the lines here with the various reports, I'd say the club has put is to Mummy that he has an assistant coaching / development job if he wants it.

He's an interesting one. Has shown he can be an effective small forward at AFL level. Two clubs have let him go now. Pies traded him and Dees delist him. Both sides had reasonable small forward stocks I guess. Is there more to this than meets the eye?

Just saw that he didn't play a single game at AFL level for Melbourne this year. Apparently went well in VFL all season but just couldn't crack the side?

Could see him filling role that Matt Kennedy vacates as depth mid/fwd

What are our thoughts on picking up sumner again on a rookie? Wouldn’t cost anything and his body might be right

Remembering we rated him as a junior and only traded him because of injury/ salary

Could solve the small forward issue

I'm not averse in principle to picking someone up to fill a niche, but given that he had time at Carlton, continued having some injury issues, and has now been cut by them too ... I just don't think he's got what's required. Always happy to look at DFAs to see if there's a possible nugget there for a specific role if $ or lack of picks don't enable us to go with someone of choice. So if the club thought there was a possibility of resurrecting him & the medical report was OK, then for a rookie spot I'd raise my eyebrows but live with it. However, I'd definitely prefer this year to be looking at guys like Spargo & Powell to fill that role, and if we can work out how to trade up, then Jack Higgins.

All good points. And obviously a lot depends on the medical report. I don’t see sumner as a step backwards because we didn’t get rid of him cos he isn’t good enough, it was through injury as far as I understand

Terribly incosistent. He has all the tools we need of speedy small forward though. From a distance it appears a classic case of work ethic and concentration not being there. Could be worth a try.

I read in Canberra Times Powell has been working with a highly regarded sprint coach from the AIS in lead up to combine.
He didn't get much game time in the middle for Giants NEAFL for obvious reasons so his raw stats dont show much as a half forward but when he played for Canberra Demons in midfield he got a Rising Star Nom and was impressive . Other Clubs like his ball use vision and footskills.
