My thoughts are if we are in the window most people agreed our list required the best available small forward and that on stats it was Higgins. We take a speculative pick with Bonar at 11.
We then pass on Spargo argably the second best and a was an academy player.
We actually could have screwed over everyone who took our zone away from us had we taken the best kpp at 11 in Brander then Spargo at 27.
Shipley is a PR pick no one bid on him either he will never be in our best 22 while being a finals team. To use your words taking Powell would have inspired kids in Canberra, Powells stats were better than Shipley in nationals having said that Shipley imho deserved to be the last picked in the ND.
Caruso spoke before the draft and said he was going for a young developing ruck how do you reckon Richards feels now.
The recruiters have basically said scew the academy.
I think our recruiters really liked Higgins and from what I’ve read he was one of 3 options for the selection (the other being Ed Richards).
Higgins will be a good player and was an obvious candidate. Personally I don’t think his lack of agility will have any impact on his career as he has footy nous and game sense.
He is not a noted defender and defensive pressure is seen currently as an area of improvement so that might have been a red flag.
They identified Bonar very early as a player of interest and really zeroed in on him. His junior career was not as decorated as it was punctuated by injury but make no mistake his coach at Dandenong rated him every bit as good as blokes that went much higher than him.
If Bonar does a knee than he could be a bust but if he has a normal career his ceiling is just about bigger than any player in this draft. In my opinion it was a worthwhile punt.
Once he was picked we chose what we rated the best small forward in the draft. At 170 cms Daniels is a dwarf, but the vision on him shows a very strong, mobile, highly skilled small who looks built in the mould of a Brent Harvey/Puopolo/Papley style player. That is the prototype player our list is currently missing and addresses a real need.
We had a better opportunity than anyone to see Spargo and felt Daniels was better suited for needs. Time will tell if that turns out but many pundits felt it was the right call.
Sam Taylor is a tall mobile intercepting key defender who has form at seniors level and looks a fine prospect, particularly with a pre-season or two to strengthen up. He offers us real depth if one of Davis or Corr goes down with injury which in our short history has been frequent.
Powell started out rated higher than Shipley but I think Shipley has gone past him significantly. Richards was at one point rated quite highly but hasn’t as yet improved enough.
We’ve found anyone in the GWS Academy is significantly overrated. Brander and even Spargo (as 16yo) were at times rated potential Number 1 picks and in reality neither were in that class. In time these guys might work there way back but they cannot be gifted spots.
In some ways the Academy scenario worked counter productive to us in that it heavily influenced draft selections to a point where we picked good players but not necessarily the best for our needs.
The re-zoning has changed that so our recruiters are making the required adaption.
