I'm a little bearish on Preuss at the moment, while Tef is an unabashed Todd fan there is some truth in Preuss not demonstrating a huge amount of around the ground nouse yet. I love his bash and crash cameos but can he extrapolate that to even 75% TOG at AFL level week after week?

We play Todd because:

a) He is the best tap ruckman on our list
b) His endurance allows us to play another midfielder.
c) Preuss and Daw magnify our midfield shortage issues by either playing together or one out.

Agree. I'm frustrated continually by Goldstein who seems unable to tap into his 2015 mindset that added big man presence to his game that made him into almost a perfect ruckman, certainly the best overall I've seen. But on balance all attributes considerd I've come around too to him being our best outright option, by some margin too.

As you say for us to get away with a lower TOG (in the ruck) player necessitates a tandem ruck setup and we don't have anywhere near the depth of 4 quarter runners throughout the side to take this hit.

For those watching at home the Port game was a sneak preview of how the side looks when a runner (Higgins) down.

He has peaked and others have since gone past him, and I don't reckon his around the ground stuff was ever in the Corey McKernan league.

His contract status is an irrelevant argument. He won't ever get anywhere near that coin again. His trade value is at the point where we are better off keeping him on our list, as he is still also the best first choice ruckman we have under the current circumstances.

He's still a good tap ruckman. Probably in the competition 4-7 range now.

If by the start of 2020 we have picked up a quality inside midfielder, Kelly, and LDU has turned the corner, then Todd will be under serious pressure to consistently perform and if we retain him it will be on a very modest contract.

We are in agreement that Preuss isn't ready yet but a lot can change in a year (goldstein went from AA to poor in only one). The point is there will come a time when Goldstein's poor performances = back to the VFL but that is largely dependent on Preuss. At the moment it's lack of a better option but Preuss has the potential to expedite the process.

That is true but we have options and it's not like we are short of height down back if Majak plays in the ruck. If anything it adds more credibility to Majak playing.

It's not like Preuss has to match todd's TOG percentage to overthrow him. That's a strength very few ruckmen can do. But he offers different strengths. I think people always refer back to what goldstein could do, not what he's actually doing. He's served up little for a few years now and people think he'll magically improve just because he did an interview during the pre-season discussing how hard life has been outside of football recently. I'd love the goldy of old to be back because if he was we don't have this discussion. The reality is he's a player on 900k and got smashed by gawn and was poor against port. If that's what we want we could pay someone significantly less to deliever the same output.

Goldy is averaging 84.4% TOG.

So it's not like goldstein is some cardio freak. He's on par or below other ruckmen. Even if Preuss only gets 75% at least he's taking marks and throwing his weight around which is the opposite to what goldstein does.

Why do you and others keep regurgitating this mate? It has no relevance whatsoever once the contract has been signed.

Are you inferring that you would prefer to play a less capable ruckman because they get less money than Goldstein, in the knowledge that Todd get's paid the same anyway, whether he plays AFL, VFL or not at all?

You don't pick weekly footy sides by utilising a financial weighting scale. You pick the best option.

It's a factor when building a list and if money is being thrown around to others it's a huge elephant in the room. Let's not pretend players haven't been shipped off in the past with offers of paying their wages or at the very least part of it (geelong and black come to mind). We accepted less just to get him off the books.

I woukd prefer to play a less capable (arguable at this junction because todd is a solid tap ruckman and even his TOG% is below hes past lofty standards) ruck if it meant we could lure other players to the club that could potentially improve the team and our shot at success.

The salary cap is obviously a factor and contracts can be renegotiated if both parties are willing.

Sure I probably would too, but see Goldy as probably a 3rd round pick, and Preuss late first round or early second (good return from a Rookie draft pick up). I guess it all depends on how Xerri develops and if he is likely to be a preferred ruckman to Preuss, early doors but think he shows a lot of promise.

Shit, he hasn't even been on an AFL list for TEN GAMES and he has to turn the corner.

Maybe you need to do some expectation management/walk in the poppy field/etc.

The only way I'd trade Preuss was if the club made a play for Bailey Williams via live trading from his resultant currency.

I.e we got a early second rounder or a 2019 first from say Geelong and were able to package it for a live trade for Williams as he's available in the 12-20 range.

I think he's extremely unique, he's kicked some massive bags in junior footy, but is also genuinely elite ruck prospect athletically.

He's a better version of Paddy Ryder imo.

I would then be prepared to carry Goldstein to retirement with Xerri and Williams as developing rucks.


Live trading completely changes the game, being able to align needs with best available.


We're essentially trading a ruck for a ruck, but one that cashes in on the value of a developed one, for one that needs a few years, with probably a higher ceiling.
