PIES WILL NEED TO PAY UP FOR MIHOCEK

By Jon Ralph

COLLINGWOOD revelation Brody Mihocek will push for a two-year contract extension after his stunning rise to senior football.

The Magpies selected the 25-year-old former Port Melbourne defender at No.22 in last year’s rookie draft as defensive insurance.

But he kicked four goals in his first AFL game and has played the past eight games, kicking 15 goals and at least one major in every game so far.

His manager Anthony McConville said yesterday he was thrilled for his client after a career that went via Tasmania, Essendon reserves, Werribee and Port Melbourne.

As a 2018 rookie, Mihocek is on a set base of $75,000 plus $4000 per game and a maximum bonus of $12,000 for 11 or more senior games.

It means he has made $107,000 so far this year, good money compared to the average wage but much less than the AFL average wage around $370,000.

McConville is keen to provide some security for Mihocek after a seven-year journey towards the AFL.

“Rookie contracts are one year, so we are in conversations with Collingwood right now. How long that takes to progress I am not sure,’’ he said.

“But he has had a good year and played senior footy and we are hoping that can continue for the remainder of the year.

“We are looking to do a two-year contract extension.”

Mihocek is expected to take on Sydney on Saturday night despite an ankle sprain that hampered him against Richmond.

McConville lauded Collingwood’s foresight to rookie Mihocek then see his potential as a key forward.

“We had all the faith in Brody and his ability to play at the highest level and he just needed a club to back him in and take a chance with a mature-ager and we are very fortunate Collingwood gave him that opportunity.

“He was playing solid footy as a defender and we always knew he could play both ends of the ground, he had the flexibility to play forward and back and they didn’t pigeonhole him as a one-trick pony.

“So for a club to envisage he could play that role going forward was a really good thing.”

Mihocek’s elevation is one of a number of remarkable football stories this year that include this week’s debut for Nathan Freeman and Alex Johnson’s return to football.

Why are the kangas not having a crack at lynch pretty good combo lynch and brown would be and not much more than what u are supposedly offer polec. Give up atley next years first rd and this years 2nd round
Saving it for midfielders, not a selfish flog.

Mixed feelings on Lynch.

Watching an AFL Vic lovechild land a KPF = bad

Watching another strike against the farces that are NE franchises = good

Overall, whether it's richmond, pies, hawks or brunswick - it's good that players value real clubs higher than franchises :thumbsu:

Couldn't care less about Lynch going to the Tigs. It will cook their cap and they'll lose a lot of their depth.
Hmm I see it more as the best team in the comp replacing their champ full forward with a champ CHF just as he retires and they're likely to keep most players because winning flags and PUMA deals are worth more than salary payments in the real world.

Pretty much this, but in saying it, the move like this is character defining and it’s not a good character.

I'd normally agree but I rate the fabric of a McGC so lowly I can't judge a bloke walking out on them negatively.

And I'm someone who has questioned Polec's makeup and character for walking on a struggling Brisbane.

Fair enough.

I wish more blokes walked out on the Cola's, I'll even drive them to the airport to do it if it would mean that the Cola's suffer.

You'll come around to Polec.

I can definitely see his on-field appeal.

But at a club where we should trademark "flash in the pan" I'm skeptical about his ability to move to Victoria and give us 5 years of quality football.

I get where exactly you're coming from now and it's fair. You'll come round though.

I just hate the whole FA compensation system.

Essentially every other clubs (including the bottom clubs) get taxed to pay for Richmond or Collingwoods pickup?

It's just incredibly backward.

In tight drafts it can mean a huge amount.

You may miss out on a Judd, Martin etc if your pick is pushed out because a player moved to a top team and comparatively, their pick usually a lot higher has lower consequences than a top 5 pick moving out 1 spot.

There has to be some sort of payment coming from the recruiting team imo. A points value which is deducted from their overall pick pool etc.

Pretty sure he can't sign with us officially until after the season ends.
IF we get Gaff this year then I really don't care if we're forced to take TT with our first pick because we're getting Jelly next year.

Gaff, TT and Jelly in consecutive years is pretty special and LDU will basically be a new recruit next year too.

Might take a season for them to all 'click' but when it all comes together our midfield will be scary!

Have said all along just scrap compo.

Richmond (in theory if they actually paid the wages themselves) overload their cap poaching a star, GC now have big space to pull in players looking for more opportunity and $$ from the top clubs. It balances up.

If Gaff comes this year or Kelly next year ........ I would be more than floored I would be ..... where is that mind blown gif .....

I just cant see it happening, we have chased so many and so many have said no, someone convince me why they would come. Please don't give me the "his dog would love it" or "his dad played for us" or "its the money" just give me one good reason why a star player would want to leave a probable premiership contending team to come to us in the next 2 years.......

Have a feeling if he hasn't by semi-final week, Eagles should be worried.

He's in line to make history by signing with Melbourne who will also pocket a top 3 compensation pick for him by poaching him from themselves in the same deal.

Balmey must be doing somersaults to fit all these campaigners under the cap

I don't see how it's legal

Houli and Grigg out and Lynch in

It does not add up

Works in theory but it's harder for bottom/small clubs to attract star players to go to them. You don't see the best players leaving their teams to go to teams at the bottom of the ladder.

Brother it is the money

It is the coin. The dollar. The cash ****in money. We have so much of it that it's impossible to say no to. We could make Gaff the highest paid player in the competition and have something left over

It will convince someone at some stage. There are not that many morally pure individuals in the competition that can say no to it forever

Hell the only reason Martin isn't having a considerably lower impact than he did last season in a North jumper is because Richmond got a third party deal to make the difference between our offer and their offer, which I'm led to believe was not inconsequential

Someone out there wearing an AFL jumper will take the ****ing cash dollar coin money we are offering at some point. It won't matter whether they're balls deep in a flag tilt or anchored to the bottom of the ladder. It'll happen and when it does we'll all make them a whipping boy by 5pm round 1 when they didn't have 71 possessions and four goals
