I don't think so many clubs continued to pay over for them. Melbourne paid overs- but thought they were getting an elite key defender to top off a list that could contend- they were looking to pay low end first compensation. The Bulldogs paid unders.

But isnt the fact that we can produce a great looking third tall every year a pretty clear sign that it doesnt require massive resourcing?

Possibly, again it's just my opinion which isn't worth much. There's much more chance here that you are correct and I'm not.
