What if anything does chasing Papley/Martin/Butler and even Betts have to say about Kennedy/Cuningham/Fisher/Dow/SPS?

Gibbons has out delivered on his 'cost' - others have way under delivered in 2019. Forced to choose I reckon Gibbons hard running is a greater attribute than Fisher's dinky jinks or Dow's fumbles and hacks with ball in hand - Dow cost pick 3 or 4 didn't he?

I'd have Gibbons playing ahead of Fisher/Dow right now anywhere on the park. SPS has somewhat redeemed himself off HBF under Teague - but that wasn't really what he was recruited for was it? Cuningham and Kennedy have had the injury horrors for a couple of years - will they, like Marchbank and Williamson get their bodies right for 2020 or not?

I'm not a buyer of the desperate for genuine small forwards equals Papley or Martin - yes Betts is a specialist small forward but teh first two I reckon will be keeping a few of the class pets out for a long time.
They'll need to step up or fall by the wayside.
There's spots available for those willing to fight.
Murph and Ed also nearing the end.
Think we'll find out the characters of a few next season.

The good thing about the hunt for a Papley/Martin ( and I hope a decent mid somehow) is that the Club seems to be under no illusion that 'we are set' and have 'the best young list in AFL' ...I reckon that is total bollocks based on form on the board.

I reckon SOS has nailed Charlie / Harry / Weitering / McGovern - Walsh picked himself - but serious question marks over a few of the fancied cameo types remain - yep I agree make 'em fight for it. Under Bolton all I saw was the samne skinny runts getting ploughed into the ground by bog ordinary more physically developed players week in week out - enough.

Don't know how Clubs can score Kelly/Stack types for nothing - and Carlton give contracts to Finbar / Polson types - I mean get serious.

Of the 5 you mentioned (Kennedy, Cunners, Dow, Fish, SPS) 2 I would keep, but any one of the other 3 I would trade for Papley if push came to shove.
Cue the haters.

With McGovern, Charlie and Jones in the team? Absolutely.
We are quite tall down back, Jonesy began his career resurrection playing in the ruck in the NB's.
There could be times he could give a chop out if required.
Just a thought

McKay is a better option, but I think we have enough options if there are concerns on match-day.

McKay's more at risk of back issues if he's standing at the front of a pack. Centre bounce work is hard on the knees.

Seems clear McKay will be our long term chop-out ruck option. Happy to trust the coaches to grow him into that role however quickly or slowly they see fit.

Assuming we get Martin, Papley and Betts, Does Bam Bam Kennedy go back to playing in the guts, cause I really feel like he has found his niche playing up forward.

Whatever we do, we should not release this and next years firsts regardless of how many seconds may come back to us.

SOS is going to have to make do with #9, a future second and if need be, Casboult or Kennedy to make Papley & Martin happen.
I’m not that worried. Sounds like next year’s draft is pretty compromised by F/S and academy prospects anyway.

Pretty sure we won’t give away a high pick for the sake of it, if it happens there will be stuff coming back to make it worth our while.

What if our future 1st (and something else?) goes to GCS for Martin and 15 or 20 which we then on-trade for another senior player?

As for Kennedy and Casboult, you’ve obviously got to convince them to agree to a move before you count them as currency. Considering their well publicised TPP issues, maybe after Ellis, Greenwood (and others... Crouch?) they might not have enough left to entice Matt or Levi.

Scott Selwood totally shot as a player or an okay option as a DFA pickup, experiences big body for backup and midfield help for Cripps?

Would prefer not to lose next year's first for the players that have nominated us so far, but I'd have no hesitation if we could use it to grab a quality mid. Reckon there'd be a range of views among other clubs on how much we might improve next year, so we could potentially get some good value by trading that pick now.

There's still a spot available in our midfield for him. Cripps needs another big body alongside him.

Don't see any room for Kennedy up forward unless injuries permit.

Even Cooney mentioned today that he thought he was brought across to play alongside Cripps as an inside midfielder - he needs to resume that play.

I hope he gets a really good run at it this preseason.

Seems like he's always had an injury that's delayed his preparation.

We’ve finished at the bottom for how many years now?

The List needs to improve. Players need to come in, players need to go out.

‘Respectful ruthlessness’ you might call it.
We had to manufacture what GCS referred to in its most recent application for draft concessions as ‘a clump of early picks;’ by trading out established players in their prime to move up the draft order. That’s why we finished toward the bottom most recently.

I raised him as an option earlier this year - if his body is sound, I'm absolutely looking at him as an option for a year.

Yes he'll be 30 early next year but I still think he has something to offer by way of veteran presence, as a mature big-bodied mid who has some positional flexibility.

You're not getting him to play every game at senior level but at worst he's a really good addition to the VFL side who can plug a hole or play a role at senior level if and when required.

Has always been able to find plenty of the ball and remains hard as a cats head. Loves the rough stuff.

Not long ag Hardwick was asked a question along the lines of would you rather a great tackler or a great kick or something to that effect and he mentioned that it was a trait that he and the club were targeting. I think it was in reference to a lot of their smalls who don't have good skills but tackle lots and apply pressure.

It made me wonder, would SOS pick guys like this? This is what i meant, when i said im not sure you get a good spread of the right types at the pointy end of the draft.
Apologies for the delayed reply; I had to think about my response.

I don’t believe SOS would deliberately avoid choosing such players at the pointy end merely to satisfy ego; if that’s what you mean. Having strong views on what’s best isn’t necessarily adverse to getting best results. But perhaps it requires an appropriate spread of justifiably strong views amongst the other relevant decision makers; to sell the benefits of adopting a particular selection strategy to those who are ultimately responsible for selection.

Perhaps just as appropriate a question to ponder might be whether SOS would have chosen such players had Hardwick, who has a strong personality and greater level of experience than BB, was CFC’s coach; or conversely whether the Tigers would have chosen such players if Bolton was their coach at that time.
