And keep hartigan (same age) ....surley you jest

One of the fw KPP on our list with above average pace & footy nous

I don't care about keeping Hartigan or not. He's a cheaper, and much less valuable stop gap whilst Butts develop. The difference in keeping Keath and Hartigan is one gives us a 2nd round pick, the other does not, whilst both are effectively stop gap solutions whilst we rebuild.

If we went in next season with a tall defensive set up of Talia - Butts (using Hartigan when he gets cooked) - Doedee, I would be very comfortable with that. To extend that plan, we also should drafted another KPD somewhere to use to siphon Doedee out of the third tall role (and into something more valuable) in 2021.

No we aren't. He is prime trade bait for a rebuilding side.

27 year old second KPD (being somewhat generous) with one good year, and a side who needs desperately needs to regen their list so should be entertaining trading older players who aren't integral to the side (which Keath isn't). It's a hard call to trade him, but also the right one.

Bank a second and move on here.
Pick in then 20s, 30s, what’s an acceptable 2nd? And when would this second play?

Preferably in the 20s, though could live with early 30s depending on the trade.

Good chance for 2020 if he clicks in preseason, most likely in 2021. After all, we're rebuilding and from that, a lot of positions open up. Before you throw out any argument about Keath being guaranteed to play in 2020, I want to remind you we're rebuilding, and by that, that's completely irrelevant.

A pick in the early 20's would be a good chance of picking up highly rated athletic KPF Josh Worrell who can play both ends.

#20 Josh Worrell
Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro | Key Position Utility
11/04/2001 | 193cm | 78kg

The Sandringham Dragons defender has had an impressive past few weeks after not having to do too much in the Dragons’ obliteration of Calder in the opening round of the NAB League season. On the MCG against Casey Demons, Worrell stood tall in defence, showing an ability to remain calm under pressure and use the ball well. At 193cm, Worrell will be a player that clubs look at differently, being that few cms smaller than the current trend for key position defenders, which is fine considering Worrell’s ability to provide run and carry out of defence. He is still lightly built, but he is strong overhead and has the potential to develop into a tall midfielder or one who roams off half-back and sets up attacking plays. A player who will spend the season at Haileybury College.
August Ranking: #19
Last month: His season is over after a shoulder injury sidelined him for the remainder of the 2019 season.

That's the exact contradiction I was just trying to figure out.
Code for: more money?
Probably means we take everything he says with a grain of salt.
Yep. Players will publicly give reasons that don't reflect poorly on themselves or on the club they're leaving.

Hence you get stuff like it being all about family or homesickness or fishbowl environment or beach life

According to public utterances no one has ever left because "I got offered way more money"

Or because "I started hating the club, think the coaches are rubbish and they won't have any success"

I heard an awful rumour that a young indigenous footballer from SA died this week. Apparently had potential as an AFL footballer and someone said he had links to the Crows? All kinda weird rumour talk and not been able to find anything elsewhere.

Not sure about Crows links but apparently had some real ability. Very sad

And depending how badly the buying club wants Alex, we might be able to pry a r1 pick from them by including other picks we have/will have.

We are rebuilding not tanking. Keep the right players and give our talent a chance and we could go ok.

Hartigan stays as a warm body on minimum wage, ready to be cut loose as soon as we have a younger replacement.

When Dunstall came in as CEO at Hawthorn, he delisted or traded everyone over 27. We shouldn't be THAT severe, but we should be looking to 2022, and competing for the finals again then. If you're not in that team and not Rory Sloane, you should either be traded this year or phased out as your contract expires.

I'd trade Jenkins, Greenwood, Keath, Jacobs and Tom Lynch. Gibbs and Betts stay, retiring at the conclusion of their contract. We build around the Crouch brothers.

Yep, the next year or two has to be about maximising our return on players 27+

We've got to be looking longer term.

Popping up into the top 4 once every 5 or 6 years isn't going to get it done.

You rebuild now and the aim has to be a side who gets there and then improves over the next few years.

Not let's get there and then after a year have to retire Tex, Sloane, Lynch, Gibbs, Keith, Greenwood and whoever else is in that age bracket.

Something most premiers have in common is they had a side good enough to be in or around the top 4 come the end of the year for multiple years.

Our pattern is float around 6th to 12th, top 8 being a pass, then we jump up have one good season, then crash back down out of the 8.

I think we've finished the home and away season top 4 six times in our existence, that is no where near enough chances.

People are worried about us losing players who were good this year and will probably be good next year, but who cares, next year isn't the year for us, 2021 isn't the year for us if we are doing this properly. Finishing 8th, 9th, 10th or 18th isn't really relevant.

Yes correct. They say less is more. Keep it simple.
An individual will give it from their position 99% of the time. That's why I found that interesting. Two points in contradiction, too much twisting.

Although I was going off the post, I didn't listen to Charlie's words.

To go another way....Was he actually saying the game plan sucked as a forward? Couldn't use his natural flair?
We all know now our game plan sucks and is boring as bat shit, could we read that into it?

Was awesome as a hard running wingman that focussed on working into defence. From memory, only had about a season (or less)of it though due to ACL. Was primo fit, worked his ass off and aerially unbeatable, a brilliant wingman. A role I’d like to see Sloane play a bit more of. The average plodder that can tag him at a stoppage wouldn’t go with him when gut running and would struggle overhead when he pushes forward. But nah, let’s just keep doing the exact same thing and letting a C grader take him out of the game.
Quoted cuz I agree 100%
Both on Burton, yeah he suffered from typical crows one year too long syndrome so that last yr sticks.
Also on Sloane. Made his name as a gut busting winger, get him back there. You want to tag? Then run 100m and out mark him. Then we get speed in the midfield, smith/jones.

Exactly.

It's not a case trading out as many players as possible to get as many draft picks as possible... rather trading out player we don't think will be part of our future best 22 for a flag rebuild. This includes if they may keep a younger player out.

This makes Keath a keeper imo. He is not keeping Doedee out.

Players we should be considering for trade are Jenkins, Jacobs, Lynch, Hartigan, Greenwood, Atkins & Laird.

This will give us enough picks for a refresh.

If Naughton’s done his ACL, Bulldogs may be willing to throw a little more at Jenkins

Thats horrible news if he's done it but that makes Jenkins and Keath a little more important for them.... might be able to jag something decent if they go as a pair
