St Kilda only had Bruce up because we wanted Max, next minute he's gone and no Max but we get Jones and Sam Grey. Ca we have a board spill please. We can't afford these idiots doing more damage. At least our 3rd round picks for Carlisle and Stuv will be useful in getting some lemons in. Collingwood will only have a pick in the 20s. Should get us Jones from Sydney. I really want to cancel my membership if we fu** this up but the morons in charge don't care anyway. They are just stealing a wage.
Gringo... Relax. You are talking definitively about something that has yet to happen and nonsense rumours. How about we see what happens before getting all doomy and gloomy

Western Bulldogs set to poach St Kilda forward Josh Bruce
Jay Clark, Herald Sun

The Western Bulldogs are on the verge of poaching St Kilda forward Josh Bruce with a lucrative multi-year deal.

The Bulldogs have made a strong play for the versatile big man and are preparing to table an offer he cannot refuse in next month’s trade period.

Bruce, 27, is contracted for one more season at Moorabbin, but could secure a three or four-year deal to cross to the kennel.

The Saints are aware of the Bulldogs’ interest in the popular goalkicker but are yet to make significant moves to keep Bruce.

It means the 197cm forward is most likely on the move to join the premiership tilt under Luke Beveridge for next season, unless St Kilda tables a considerable extension over the next few weeks.

Bruce enjoyed another productive season despite some injury niggles this year, booting 36 goals from 22 games.

He ranked first at the club for contested marks (43) and was second for marks inside 50m (40), goals and hitouts in 2019.

Bruce, who started his career at GWS, has close links to the Bulldogs through chief executive Ameet Bains, from their time at the Saints together.

But the Dogs would have to satisfy the Saints in a trade to nab the 113-gamer.

Another top-30 draft pick could be important for St Kilda, however, which currently has only one selection (No.5) inside the top 50 and is plotting moves for Fremantle’s Bradley Hill, Sydney’s Zak Jones and Adelaide’s Alex Keath.

The Bulldogs are preparing to be one of the most aggressive clubs in this year’s trade period with the Dogs also circling Gold Coast playmaker Jack Martin.

The Dogs have money to spend to bolster their squad after missing out on Chad Wingard, who crossed from Port Adelaide to Hawthorn last year.

The Bulldogs already have one of the best young midfields in the league and are arguably the most in-form team heading into the finals series.

A youthful age profile suggests the Dogs will remain in the premiership hunt for an extended period under Beveridge, who this year signed a three-year contract extension.

At the Dogs, Bruce would partner gun spearhead Aaron Naughton and Josh Schache in attack and help out emerging young tall Tim English in the ruck.

Bruce was hampered by a serious back injury last year, playing only three games, but has since made a full recovery and has been part of the Saints’ leadership group.

But St Kilda is preparing to make major changes over the next few months to shake up its list after eight years out of the finals.
Josh Bruce is a popular member of the St Kilda side.

The club could part ways with Bruce and gun defender Jake Carlisle.

The Saints are keen to create room for 202cm goalkicker Max King to play from early next season, alongside Tim Membrey and potentially Josh Battle and Port Adelaide big man Paddy Ryder in the forward half.

St Kilda also has a strong interest in Max King’s twin brother Ben.

The Saints have tried to secure him in this trade period but will make another massive play for the big man when his contract expires in 12 months’ time.

King’s manager, Robbie D’Orazio, told the Herald Sun on Tuesday: “Ben King will be at Gold Coast next year”.

"and potentially Josh Battle" has me excited.

Not bad

Savage was in our best 5 to 10 players this year, can't see why we'd dump him.
I agree he had a really good and consistent year but looking at the smaller defenders and I can only include three of Geary, Webster, Clark and Savage, Savage would be the one to miss for me.

Gears is the best lock down defender, Webster the best balance between attack and defence plus I rate his kicking, and Clark is just too special not to be playing. Savage unfortunate but it's great we now have depth to be discussing.

Bruce would be handy to keep, but he has not stamped himself on the forward line for a while- good on his day, but inconsistent like so many of our more experienced players. Our forward half has been pretty ordinary for a while. I'm sure the club want Battle in the forward line in the long run and are obviously banking on King coming on as a player, though that's just going on potential and nothing else at the moment.

None of these things have happened yet.

Board should have been spilled when Richo lost his job. Total failure from those in charge of the club. Who is standing up to take over, though?

There is no accountability and no repercussions for mediocrity and failure at St Kilda. It’s like the blind leading the blind and now we’re heading into a trade period looking to offload top 10 players to bring in, what, maybe 1 guy who isn’t a spud?

A lot of doom and gloom here, the gringo grumbles has been caught by a few people.

You can’t magically get players in with the draft hand we have. Plus we have made no mistake of what we want to bring in this year or next.

Bruce out of the forward line allows us to be quite flexible in a number of ways. One, on the draft table to still have a high pick and satisfy Fremantle for Hill to secure the other side of the ground for a powerful duo with Billings. It also lets us bring in King as a permanent forward to grow, and also Ryder as that forward/tuck swap with Marshall which I feel is being underrated on here. He averaged 0.9 goals a game this year compared to Bruce’s 1.6 so still serviceable as a third option. Plus when he goes into the ruck he’s going to be a lot more helpful than Bruce.

I like the bringing in of Keath if it occurs. It sounds like that would mean Carlisle is out. I personally don’t understand why we would do it but it has to be something happening behind closed doors whether attitude or the fact his body just won’t let him be the player we require. It’s a serviceable backline. Tomlinson also probably comes for nothing more than a nice pay day which I don’t mind. We were going to sell the farm for him a few years ago so it’s better than what could’ve happened.

there's nothing to suggest the new list manager knows what he is doing. this is his first full season from memory.

this will be his biggest call. trading bruce and carlisle. bringing in hill and ryder.

he's either going to look good, or look like an absolute idiot.

Equally there's nothing to show the new list manager doesn't know what he's doing. This is his first full season afterall

Let's wait till we see how this all pans out before we release the lynch mob

When in the last 8 years has the club shown it knows what it’s doing?

I’ll start believing in their decisions when they stop the constant stream of blunders.

It’s been so bad that even with a bag full of cash we can’t attract any big names to the club. Imagine offering over a mil per year to guys who are turning it down for far less. It’s embarrassing and says an awful lot about the club.

Shane Savage

#5 St Kilda Saints

Age: 28yr 7mth

A halfback flanker who is nearly 29 , we might be looking past him shortly - having Webster , Newnes , Paton , Hunter Clark , Coffield , Savage , Geary , McKenzie , White .

its not a really strong draft from all reports so pick 5 could well be equiviallant of pick 15 in any other year so im not against it .. i think its important to get it done early as i feel Peter Bell will bring his small man syndrom into the trade table and just waste everyones time ... Hill is only one peice of the puzzle that we need to get happening so we cant afford to waste time with little men who want to sound important
Hill is not the most important trade, just the most expensive.
Get the important trade completed first.

I feel your pain, but this isn't the board from 8 years ago. Let's give them the chance to prove they're complete **** sticks before we brand them as such.

They may well prove you right, but i prefer to give new people a chance before i give up on them

I’m astonished that people think moving Bruce is a bad idea (assuming we get fair value) - some combination of King, Membrey & Battle and potentially a back up ruck seems fine to me. This also assumes Paddy Mac is cooked and we don’t need to consider him as part of the mix.

I think Bruce’s value will only decrease in coming years and if we can bring in a mid or the picks that allow us to trade for one then that’s great.

Can only play so many big blokes up forward IMO and we should be getting exposure for big Max next year

I don't buy into the talk of it not being a strong draft. There is a clear top 2, and there is the obvious omission of serious quality in the KP department - but it's still quite a good draft for mids and flankers.

Most of us want to throw away pick 5 like its useless but it's still pick 5 which would net us the next Bont (Kemp).

I don't buy it. It's said to be weaker due to no talls but we aren't in the market for a first round tall.
It is demonstrably weaker because you have the three teams who currently hold #2, #3 and #5 all indicating they want to split picks ie: trade down.
Plus you have the team that currently holds #10 seeking permission from the AFL to be able to trade it.
Tell me which strong, or even reasonably mild, draft has that ever happened before?
Where four teams want to trade out of the top 10 picks?

spot on. that's my point!

end of the day its our club ... we put our hope in the ability of getting the job done for us ... if we dont like it then as members we voice it at the AGM

Looking at his performance on draft night ,the bloke is a Master Strokesman .
Absolute no idea what he is doing .
Chumming up to Adelaide his only friend and they still didn’t deal with him !

While I think all three will be better forwards in the long run than Bruce, I worry about King being up on the oppositions best defender from day 1 and it hurting his development. Bruce is the perfect shield for King for the first few year of career while he gets size and adjusts to the speed of the game.

Not sure you can use Carlton offering Adelaide a better deal against the List Manager.
Crows weren't going to take the lesser offer just because Gags is from Adelaide.
