From memory Twomey was miles off with his 2nd last phantom last year and then the night before the draft all his mail came in and he released his last phantom that was really very accurate. Feel for him this year because it must be so much harder to get the scoop from clubs when it is all happening virtually.

* except Essendon who like to have their inner workings up on the whiteboard behind them in Zoom conferences :)

Took a risk on Josh Simpson who was a hell of a talent. Didnt work out.

took a risk on Michael Apeness. Fair enough at the time as freo needed a KPF/ruck. he got injuries. Didnt work out.

Took a Risk on the Harley Bennell trade(s). On the surface the acutal trade was sort of ok. But Bennell played 2 dockers games in late 2017 and 20-25 WAFL games for peel from 2016 to 2019. the 3 picks we got on that Harley bennell trade(s) was Darcy Tucker, Harley Balic and Sam Collins. Tucker is a solid player in freos best 22. Balic had some ability but didnt work out. Sam Collins I wished he kept as he would of been solid depth in the back line.

Took a Risk on Jesse Hogan trading picks 6 and 23 to get him.

Again, happy for freo to take that risk?

If we do, Lets look back in around 2028-2030 and watch hawks beat us in Another grand final, having 2 elite mids that tear us apart because we stupidly handed them 2 picks for the hope that mcdonald is going to be a good player.

Remember, Freo traded picks 1, 20 and 36 to the hawks for Luke McPharlin and Trent Croad at the end of 2001.

Pick 1 was Luke Hodge, Pick 36 was sam mitchell and Trent croad moved back 2 years later.

And to think freo offered a couple of 1st rounders for a 2nd tall in cam McCarthy at the end of 2015. So that was pick 16 and potitienally pick 3 due to our slip.


Dont Get me wrong, I do want freo to win a premiership before I am in a coffin or before I am cremated.

But pissing away 1st rounders on "potiential" that doesnt get fufilled doesnt sit well with me.

All true but we would have taken Polak with pick 1 regardless I’ve read as we rated him for he best player in the draft.

Did Graham Polak stand out in that season he got drafted?

I remembered Polak playing for freo. He was more comfortable playing as a tall defender at centre half back. There were times he played forward but for some reason he lacked confidence on his set shots. He was injury prone too.

He did pinch hit at ruck when Aaron Sandilands and Justin Longmuir were both injured. Yeah he was 194 cm so he was a bit short to play as a ruckman. I remembered him traded to richmond at the end of 2006.

I have purple haze from that era. Was he the fella that got hit by a train? Was he playing for Freo when that happened?

Again.... Let's talk about Freo trading heavily for players in exchange for early picks from 2000-2006.

2000 traded in Peter Bell. Not bad of a player for picks 6, 34 and Jess Sinclair. Peter Bell was a good player and a good leader but yeah..... Fair enough.

Traded in a 1st rounder to get Jeff farmer in 2001. I won't deny he was good. Not as good as his best year at the demons in 2000 kicking 70 goals he did kick 55 in 2006. He frustrated me in just last 2 years being suspended for 10-12 games in 2007.

Trading picks 1, 20 and 36 for Luke McPharlin and Trent croad in 2001. Already posted my thoughts on this.


Trading picks 3 and 19 for des headland in 2002. Looked good at Brisbane with Voss, Lappin and akermanis. Yeah that worked out well didn't it?

Traded picks 11, 27 and 43 for Josh Carr in 2004. A solid player but not worth a mid 1st, mid 2nd and mid 3rd.

Oh and finally trading pick 8 and Paul Medhurst for Chris Tarrant in 2006.

And yet all we could muster from that 2000-07 period was an elim finals loss in 2003 and a preliminary final loss in 2006.

Had Freo made finals each year from 2003-07 I would say it's justifiable.

And some people have animosity towards Ross Lyon despite our finals success from 2012-15.

Yet for some strange reason, some people have no animosity towards Chris Connolly in that 2002-7 era.

We didn't constantly trade away our 1st round picks for players that often under the Ross Lyon era of 2012-19 didn't we?
 
I don't mind us not pick Victorians early this year given the lack of exposure.

Think JL got his speed wish. Even Chapman at 3.03 is decent for a med/tall player and the other 3 are genuinely quick. All 4 have something about their kicking it seems with Walker and Chapman quality kicks and the other two at least have penetration.

Still think Noddy's ceiling is Danger-lite based on 3 minutes of highlights, write-ups and his combine.

Polak’s stand out year was as a 16 year old playing in state 18s which he dominated as a forward. The following year (drafted at 17) he didn’t play as well at state level and players like Hodge, Judd etc surpassed him. Still an epic talent but there were some warning signs.

After today’s draft, I’m certain we’re planning for Fyfe to CHF on a near permanent basis from 2022 onwards.

Adding Chapman and O’Driscoll to our last five drafts pretty much secures our defence and midfield for the 2020s.

In five years time we’ll have the following aged between 23 and 30 in defence and midfield.

Logue - Pearce - Hughes
Chapman - Ryan - Young
O’Driscoll - Brayshaw - Cerra
Darcy - Serong - Tucker

Plus Cox, Aish, Acres, Walker, Valente

And only Pearce will be 30.

Sure, our forward line will be Sturt, Henry, Freddie, Switta, Western, Schultz - so let’s hope McDonald and/or Naughton get home sick!!

well it might extend fyfes career.

Still.... I wish Mark Harvey did the same thing with Paul Hasleby back in the day. Throw him up a forward flank or forward pocket and extend his career by 2-3 years rather than force Paul Hasleby into reitrement at age 29

It is interesting to note the slightly greater emphasis that all clubs tended toward placing on locals. Eg. Adelaide went full on picking South Australians (Only Sam Berry was not from SA and it felt like they reached a little with respect to Pedlar), Brisbane and Sydney in the main avoided Victoriasn and placed a heavy emphasis of NGA (again some felt a little like conceded a bit much of on matching bids).

I think I have likened O'Driscoll to Dangerfield in style before on these boards, I think there are similarities in the way they play, size and athleticism etc. I am not sure the reason O'Driscoll is/was so lowly rated; I thought his games at a state league were very good; he played with an intensity and presence that belied the fact he was playing with seasoned bodies. When interviewed his attitude / demeanour comes across a little bit like David Warner (both the good and the bad bits) so I am wondering if that was a factor?

I have no idea but it has to be something. I assumed it was his kicking but it doesn't seem anywhere near as bad as Robertsons last year for example.

Some interesting things (and good to hear) from Belly about the draft.

- Chapman they like for the wing but due to his traits could play forward or even inside eventually
- Noddy they rated much higher than our 2nd (also acknowledged the price to move up F3rd)

Chapman stuff makes me feel better. We didn't pick him to be a defender which is great.

Just doing a quick count in my head, and I believe we have a full primary list,

Rookie list is : Hughes, Schultz, Bewley and possibly Banfield

B Rookie: Leno Thomas

Since we can’t add to the B Rookie and assuming Banfield goes to Rookie as described then we aren’t able to update until a long term injury hits.

Am I correct in my assumptions.

A developing KPF is now a big weak spot for us list wise.

Mark Harvey did play Hasleby up forward towards the end of his career...

One Category A rookie available (excluding Banfield) and one Category B available.
 
The lack of forwards on our list is perplexing.
- Taberner is starting to get on and has never played a full season
- Lobb has a bigger stutter than Hugh Grant
- Sturt is always injured
- Then it's a bunch of smalls who may be good at pressure but none are showing any of the goal kicking abilities nous we need

I keep reading about Fyfe playing forward, it's dumb as his goal kicking is poor. If he was going to be good as a forward he would be good by now, and why on earth would you play one of the best contested players of the last 30 years outside of the midfield?

Longmuir has consistently said we need to play players in their natural position and yet we don't seem to be bringing in any natural forwards.

I have no idea where our goals are coming from next year other than Taberner. Pavlich was crying out for years for helps, looks like we will have to play Tabs until he is 36 at this rate.

Reckon we need at least 2 developing KPFs. Lobb and Taberner are both 27 and both injury prone.

We are obviously ****ed if Tabs gets injured but I think our treacle ball movement was the main reason we couldn't score this year. Having proper KPDs should allow us to take more risks.

Also we checked the stats. Fyfe's goal kicking is about league average. It is a bit robbing peter playing him forward but we do have an abundance of young mids we need to develop and Fyfe is getting old.

All that said, I'll flip a lid if our rookie pick isn't a genuine KPF.
