Did he crack the top 20

Okay tonygeeks, you can reveal a photo of your budgies membership card now, as you clearly don't have a great deal positive to say about the Fremantle Football Club! 🤣

C’mon guys. One day out of the draft and this is the sh** ya dish up? No discussion on where Chapman might be able to get on the park or who might be the best options for a wing position, or the fact that Freo has their first all WA draft since 2006, etc...?

How many flipping posts have I read about how we need to draft local and then we do and now I have to read pages of how we didn’t draft the right people and should have reached for some KPF just because we have a need?

It’s your right to criticize the club (some people are never happy or satisfied and want to be curmudgeons. Wouldn’t want to deprive people of being happy by being mad) but does it have to devolve into this?

I've offered many a positive comment on our drafting in both the prior four years, and indeed yesterday. The lack of a fully stocked forward line does irritate me greatly though, as the club only has itself to blame for being in such an unenviable position.
I believe playing Young on a wing would be sacrilege, as his tracer bullet kicks are best utilised from the half-back line, as catalysts for surprise attacks on goal. Thus I feel either Darcy Tucker or Brandon Walker would be more apt selections. In regard to Chappy, I feel he'd have to carve out an apprenticeship at Peel in the coming season (on account of our heavy defensive stocks), unless of course he could be groomed as an outside mid, which I think might just be crazy enough to work!

Plenty of threads to discuss those things

This is the wash-up for the 2020 off-season

Be as happy as you like

Chapman could be the best player we’ve ever drafted but I’m not really talking about the players just the strategy

We are putting a good team together , could be the best if we don’t fall short again with the same problem that’s plagued us forever

No, I'm trying to understand yours.

At the 1st round pick we had we didn't really have any forward/ruck options. Perhaps we should have tried to trade up to where the high-end KPPs were or out of the first round to get multiple picks where somewhere else (Next year? In the second rd where we could have picked up multiple speculative KPPs?)

But given the players available at that pick, what we did seems reasonable.

Anyway, for mine, if we have an immediate issue with our rucks/KPF then we should have traded to fix it. Drafting rarely fixes an immediate need. Or perhaps we need to learn to trust Meek.

Sure , I was talking about the off season as a whole

excuse my humour but I think it goes something like this:

Mr Sumich has been on about us drafting local and gave an in depth description of nice guys and sooks. We have taken the advice and got two good guys (and produced two of our own babies). The Eagles, decided to take the sook (under wise but secretive advice no doubt from Mr Sumich).

Now that we have swallowed the cake, and it was nice too and should leave a lingering taste, we will return to our strict diet of Victorian and South Australian talent, for awhile at least, cause we ain't got a lot to pick with in the next five to six years since we will be up in the clouds.

Pearce
Cox
Hamling
Logue
Chapman

Probably not Chapman next season, but if the 4 above are all fit, they just don’t go into 2 positions with Ryan taking any third opposition tall, but are all good enough to be our 2 key defenders.

We need a tall forward when required to compete in the air & get the ball to ground. Hamling, Cox & Pearce all have forward experience either at Junior level or AFL in Cox’s case.

There are options if Tabs or Lobb go down, but as always that is dependant on fitness.
Cox goes forward.

Hamling, Logue and Pearce can and have played on smalls.

The three above won't play 22 games and Chapman can play 5-10 games.

So we're not going to take Alec Waterman?

But we've commited to Banfield, a player who's only sole contribution was blowing us all away by kicking multiple goals in a pre-season game due to our already low expectations and then he just plateaued?
I really don't understand why we re-drafted Banfield.

Waterman would have be good insurance for our tall forwards.

We picked up Treacy as a forward option, why did it have to be someone in the first round. Treacy has a built in redundancy. If he can't contribute as a key forward yet, he is aggressive enough to get the ball down to our ever increasing dangerous small/ mid forward brigade. We also have Cox and Meek and Logue at a push

+Chapman spent most of his junior years as a forward/midfielder.

I think it’s been a decent draft. Love the look of Chapman. All the players we brought in seem like really decent driven characters. Desperate to make it as top level AFL players which is the attitude we want to see.
great to pick up Treacy in the RD too - seems to have a bit of the Toby Greene attitude in him and he wont die wondering. Once he bulks up a bit and starts flinging himself around at training with no regard for his own safety, as per the footage of him in the draft video, it will put plenty of pressure on Lobb etc.
Players are not defined by their positions as teenagers and I think it’s kinda pointless pidgeon holing Chapman, as an example, as just a 3rd tall defender and nothing else. Countless examples of players developing into other positions as adults.
In terms of list gaps for 2021, I feel we are most exposed if Sean Darcy gets a long term injury. Lobb clearly can’t play full time ruck. Meek has never played a game. We would be in a bit of bother just relying on Lobb and Meek to ruck but it’s hard to fill every list gap.
I actually feel big Sean is now arguably our most important player heading into 2021 though.

I agree with you on the ruck situation but also worth considering you take out the number 1 ruck at any club and they become a little vulnerable. There are clubs like Essendon and now Geelong that have stocked up on young rucks but most of them aren’t up to it yet.

Meek is as AFL ready as he’ll every be and we need to find out if he can make the step up. Lobb isn’t a bad replacement when you consider other clubs back-ups.

As we speak today we won’t have a mid season draft pick but should there be an injury - ruck would be the position I would look at. You could add a promising early 20’s ruck or if Darcy/Lobb suffer an LT injury add a mature age player like Corey Gault to fill the void.
